zanshin book: Zanshin-ARC Thomas Keydel, 2017-01-01 This book focuses on helping you understand what is driving your decisions and the decisions of others. The word Zanshin refers to a Japanese martial arts technique for mindfulness. By cultivating a more neutral approach based on mindfulness we can learn to prioritize our decisions in new ways. Open-ended fluidity and flexibility is the goal. What we accomplish with a Zanshin outlook surpasses what we can accomplish with a more Western or rationalizing outlook. The proposed technique examines three different ways to focus your decision-making power: Personal Agency, Impersonal Agency and Divine Agency; however, the most powerful technique combines all three. To be Zanshin is to be a fluid practitioner who can move easily between the three ways of arriving at and giving focus to a decision. The book is written in plain English and is intended for a broad audience of people who want to better understand the dynamics that cause them to make decisions by default (or with little awareness). The problem of indecision is directly addressed and the reader is encouraged to examine the sources of indecision from a new perspective.Divine Agency is really another way of enabling you to looking at your situation without the benefit of either too much personal drive or too much impersonal information. Stepping back from too much that is personal or impersonal allows you to be mindfully present and in the moment especially with people who are demanding or combative. Divine Agency is truly divine because it releases us from an exaggerated way of caring that is no longer productive to ourselves or others.Wisdom stories are interspersed throughout the text to illustrate key points. Cartoons and illustrations provide light-hearted fun and offer a visual way to make sense of the book's content. Exercises are offered at the end of individual chapters and a Zanshin Summary Tutorial is presented at the end to bring together the most instructive points.By reading this book you will:* Make decisions with greater awareness. * Access more positive energy with your decisions.* Develop an empowering relationship with open-ended possibility.* Reduce your fear of risk. * Identify new choices and options with greater confidence.* Be less stressed by your decisions and more content with what happens.* Become free from the grip of indecision.* Have a greater understanding for how you are making your decisions and why others might be making theirs. |
zanshin book: Sun Tzu for Women Becky Sheetz-Runkle, 2011-01-14 In a new spin on an oft-studied classic, marketer and martial arts practitioner Becky Sheetz-Runkle reinterprets Sun Tzu's The Art of War for women in the workplace. The ancient Chinese warrior and military strategist penned the masterpiece about 2,500 years ago, but many business experts believe its precepts are as relevant in today's corporate environment as they were on ancient Chinese battlefields. Sheetz-Runkle extrapolates business lessons from Sun Tzu's maxims to help women build on their attributes, overcome obstacles and forward their careers. The book relies heavily on excerpts from the classic, along with the author's own pithy advice and stories of today's women who are the working world's modern generals. While much of the book's counsel is pretty well worn, getAbstract recommends women read this book to fortify themselves as they do battle in the corporate combat zone. |

zanshin book: Martial Arts and the Body Politic in Meiji Japan Denis Gainty, 2013-08-22 In 1895, the newly formed Greater Japan Martial Virtue Association (Dainippon Butokukai) held its first annual Martial Virtue Festival (butokusai) in the ancient capital of Kyoto. The Festival marked the arrival of a new iteration of modern Japan, as the Butokukai’s efforts to define and popularise Japanese martial arts became an important medium through which the bodies of millions of Japanese citizens would experience, draw on, and even shape the Japanese nation and state. This book shows how the notion and practice of Japanese martial arts in the late Meiji period brought Japanese bodies, Japanese nationalisms, and the Japanese state into sustained contact and dynamic engagement with one another. Using a range of disciplinary approaches, Denis Gainty shows how the metaphor of a national body and the cultural and historical meanings of martial arts were celebrated and appropriated by modern Japanese at all levels of society, allowing them to participate powerfully in shaping the modern Japanese nation and state. While recent works have cast modern Japanese and their bodies as subject to state domination and elite control, this book argues that having a body – being a body, and through that body experiencing and shaping social, political, and even cosmic realities – is an important and underexamined aspect of the late Meiji period. Martial Arts and the Body Politic in Meiji Japan is an important contribution to debates in Japanese and Asian social sciences, theories of the body and its role in modern historiography, and related questions of power and agency by suggesting a new and dramatic role for human bodies in the shaping of modern states and societies. As such, it will be valuable to students and scholars of Japanese studies, Japanese history, modern nations and nationalisms, and sport and leisure studies, as well as those interested in the body more broadly. |

It is an invaluable supplement to Jodo training to make learning easier and faster as well. Jodo (Japanese stick fighting) is taught either in Shindo Muso Ryu, or in the Zen Nippon Kendo Renmei under the name Seitei Jodo. Both systems share the same Basics (12 Kihon). The differences are in the Kata (12 in Seitei Jodo, and 64 in SMR), and the training with other weapons arts besides the Jo and the Sword (Tachi) in Shindo Muso Ryu (in the 64 SMR Kata). The ZNKR Jodo organization is by far the largest international Jodo organization. Very few books are available on Jodo. Jodo is taught worldwide, but newer literature in English is hard to get. Most of the literature is in Japanese. The Notebook is made to fill this gap in literature. The author is co-writer with George W. Alexander of The Dictionary of Japanese Martial Arts, and illustrator of The Way of White Crane Karate, both from Yamazato Productions. |

zanshin book: Musings of a Budo Bum Peter Boylan, 2017-06-15 The techniques are really a vessel for carrying all the things that are budo... Most books about martial arts (budo) focus on techniques, although some tell the history, and a few wax philosophical. It is rare indeed to discover a book that so fluently combines all this within the broader context of culture and lifestyle, and does so in such a humble, engaging, and accessible way. Budo Bum Anthology is a book that answers not so much how or what as it does why? Why call budo teachers sensei? Why do we bow? Why kata? Why keep training? Peter Boylan, aka the Budo Bum, has achieved high rank in several martial arts -- judo, iaido, jodo, and more--spending decades immersed within budo, straddling the worlds and cultures of Japan and America, and translating between them. In these essays, the reader is invited to walk alongside a quiet man who thinks deeply about the worlds in which budo was created and is practiced, and who brings the meaning of all the things that are budo into our daily lives. CONTENTS Introduction Getting Started Do you have to study in Japan to understand budo? Etiquette: Form and sincerity in budo Sensei, Kyoshi, Hanshi, and Shihan: budo titles and how (not) to use them Different ranks in martial arts? zanshin book: Aikido Weapons Techniques Phong Thong Dang, Lynn Seiser, 2012-12-04 Master the wooden weapons used in Aikido with this comprehensive martial arts training manual. Although aikido is often thought of as a nonviolent, noncompetitive martial art, the use of weapons was introduced by the art's founder O'Sensei Morihei Ueshiba. Building on the authors' belief that no empty-hand system is complete without weapons training, Aikido Weapons Techniques: The Wooden Sword, Stick, and Knife of Aikido demonstrates weapon use both as a training tool to better illustrate aikido principles, and as a self-defense against weapon attacks, focusing on the three primary weapons used in aikido: Ken--the wooden sword Jo--the wooden staff Tanto--the wooden knife A complete discussion of each weapon is included, with descriptions of the stances, grips, techniques, forms, defenses, and training appropriate for each. With over 200 step-by-step photographs and detailed instructions, this aikido book provides an in-depth exploration of weapons use in aikido--from its spiritual implications to technical theory and practical use. |

zanshin book: The Art of Life and Death Daniel Fletcher, Sleiman Azizi, 2017-05-30 This masterfully crafted guide to ninjitsu or budo explores in depth the history, culture and philosophy of this fascinating and enduring Japanese martial art. Budo is one of the least understood forms of art in the world. Even more than skills or techniques, the teachings of budo require faith to learn and courage to understand. One of the fundamental lessons of budo is ninjutsu, the art of perseverance that forms the basis of the Japanese martial arts. The lessons in this book come directly from experiencing the living vitality of the world's foremost master of the ninja arts, Masaaki Hatsumi. Through the use of stories, poetry, art, and earned wisdom, the authors move beyond the familiar image of the martial arts and reveal the nature of the unexpected changes in themselves as they struggled to come to terms with what being a martial artist in the ninja tradition meant. The Art of Life and Death is a reflection of the discipline, the aesthetics, and the philosophy that lies hidden within the martial way. It is a glimpse at the hidden potential of the martial arts, one where the practitioner can embrace transcendence and transformation to face all the fears that litter life and also life's most fearsome opponent: Death. |

zanshin book: Kendo Jinichi Tokeshi, 2003-07-31 All students of kendo--the formal art and practice of Japanese swordsmanship--will welcome this manual by an advanced practitioner with a deep understanding of the martial art. The work begins with a history of kendo in Japan, followed by a study of basic equipment and its proper care and use and a detailed description of forms and rules--essential aspects of any martial art. Beginners will find this section particularly helpful because of the close attention paid to fundamental techniques of kendo, including the rare two-sword form (nitô ryû), largely unknown outside of Japan. Each technique is accompanied by clear, easy-to-follow illustrations. The Nihon Kendo Kata and Shiai and Shinpan rules and regulations are useful references for those learning the Kata and participating in matches. The author, who is also a practicing physician, is attentive throughout to injury prevention and safety--concerns often overlooked in martial arts manuals. The elements of kendo philosophy, which can mystify even experienced practitioners, are explained in simple terms to aid understanding. The manual concludes with biographies of Japan's most celebrated swordsmen, an extensive glossary of kendo terms, and a history of kendo in Hawaii, where it has been practiced for more than a century and where some of the world's top practitioners can be found. |

zanshin book: Man Ryo Takahashi, 2022-09-05 This book explores Man: A Study on the Philosophical Edification of Zanshin in Bushido Context of Future. This study is focused on finding the context of the edification of Zanshin. To edify means to instruct and improve, especially in moral and religious knowledge. Zanshin (Japanese: 残心) means the state of awareness with relaxed alertness which is generally used in Japanese martial arts, especially Kendo. A literal Japanese translation of Zanshin is remaining mind. Zanshin is originally used for all Japanese culture's life including Kado, Sado, Judo, Kendo, Kyudo, Shogido, etc. However, the fundamental meaning of Zanshin is including the power of life, the power of understanding, and the power of action. The thesis also introduces two approaches to the foundations of values that determine the quality of life. One is a case study of the development of religious background in Japan and other related countries including indigenous teaching including the interrelationships of the Ainu people and others in Japan. The recommendations include holding major events, such as EXPO2025 OSAKA/KANSAI and Sapporo Olympics 2030 with Zanshin spirit. |
