Este clima se enmarca en un cambio general de la política progresista que, desde un enfoque marxista de clase, guiado por grandes relatos unificadores y universales, ha virado hacia otro más identitario, cultural y segregado. Su núcleo ahora es la política de la identidad, la movilización política basada en características como la raza, el género y la orientación sexual, en vez de en las distinciones clásicas del partido, la ideología o la infraestructura económica. El marxismo -en su forma de marxismo cultural- ha tenido un efecto decisivo en la nueva cultura de izquierdas, especialmente en las universidades.
