Welsh, 2011-01-01 Closing Chapters attempts to explain the disintegration of urban parochial schools in Youngstown, Ohio, a onetime industrial center that lost all but one of its eighteen Catholic parochial elementary schools between 1960 and 2006. Through this examination of Youngstown, Welsh sheds light on a significant national phenomenon: the fragmentation of American Catholic identity. |

youngstown schools strike: A Fight for the Soul of Public Education Steven Ashby, Robert Bruno, 2016-11-04 In reaction to the changes imposed on public schools across the country in the name of education reform, the Chicago Teachers Union redefined its traditional role and waged a multidimensional fight that produced a community-wide school strike and transformed the scope of collective bargaining into arenas that few labor relations experts thought possible. Using interviews, first-person accounts, participant observation, union documents, and media reports, Steven K. Ashby and Robert Bruno tell the story of the 2012 strike that shut down the Chicago school system for seven days.A Fight for the Soul of Public Education takes into account two overlapping, parallel, and equally important stories. One is a grassroots story of worker activism told from the perspective of rank-and-file union members and their community supporters. Ashby and Bruno provide a detailed account of how the strike became an international cause when other teachers unions had largely surrendered to corporate-driven education reform. The second story describes the role of state and national politics in imposing educational governance changes on public schools and draconian limitations on union bargaining rights. It includes a detailed account of the actual bargaining process revealing the mundane and the transcendental strategies of both school board and union representatives. |
youngstown schools strike: Aren't You That News Man? Gary Stromberg, 2008-11 Aren't You That News Man? is a journey through the fascinating career of television reporter Gary Stromberg. Gary takes us behind the scenes and introduces us to a wacky group of characters who somehow managed to get newscasts on the air every night. He writes about the famous people he has met including Martin Sheen, Red Skelton, Steve Allen, James Ingram, and Paul Lynde. He also focuses in on the inspiring stories of regular folks who have stood up to the unexpected challenges that came their way. Gary explains how legendary baseball manager Casey Stengel offered him a chance to join the New York Mets. He reveals why he is grateful to the Beatles for helping him get into Northwestern. And, for the first time ever, he explains why Channel 8 workers pulled the pants off of a producer, and ran them up the flagpole in front of the station. He pays tribute to his boss Virgil Dominic, who assembled award-winning news departments in Atlanta and Cleveland. He spells out how has TV news has changed through the years. Gary takes a humorous look at the transformation. You will never look at the news the same way again. |

youngstown schools strike: Public Personnel Administration and Labor Relations Norma M Riccucci, 2015-03-26 The readings in this volume will enlighten and enliven the contents of any standard public administration text covering human resource management. Selected mainly from the pages of Public Administration Review and Review of Public Personnel Administration, these classic articles trace the historical and evolutionary development of the fields of public personnel administration and labor relations from the point at which the first civil service law was passed - the Pendelton Act in 1883 - through the 21st century. The collection covers everything from the seminal concerns of civil service (e.g., keeping spoils out) to topics that early reformers would never have envisioned (e.g., affirmative action and drug testing). These works continue to inform the theory and practice of public personnel and labor relations. To facilitate an instructor's ability to assign readings that illuminate lectures and course material, a correlation matrix on the M.E. Sharpe website shows how this book can be used easily alongside eight leading textbooks. |

youngstown schools strike: Rebel Rank and File Aaron Brenner, Cal Winslow, Robert Brenner, 2020-05-05 Often considered irredeemably conservative, the US working class actually has a rich history of revolt. Rebel Rank and File uncovers the hidden story of insurgency from below against employers and union bureaucrats in the late 1960s and 1970s. From the mid-1960s to 1981, rank-and-file workers in the United States engaged in a level of sustained militancy not seen since the Great Depression and World War II. Millions participated in one of the largest strike waves in US history. There were 5,716 stoppages in 1970 alone, involving more than 3 million workers. Contract rejections, collective insubordination, sabotage, organized slowdowns, and wildcat strikes were the order of the day. Workers targeted much of their activity at union leaders, forming caucuses to fight for more democratic and combative unions that would forcefully resist the mounting offensive from employers that appeared at the end of the postwar economic boom. It was a remarkable era in the history of US class struggle, one rich in lessons for today's labor movement. |
