It is our hope that paediatric radiology in Europe will thereby be strengthened now that old barriers have fallen. At the second conjoint meeting of the ESPR and the SPR in Stockholm in 1991 a group of senior pediatric radiologists from all parts of Europe who felt that this occasion should be marked took the initiative to produce a book on the history of paediatric radiology focussing on the develop ments leading to the creation of the ESPR. We thank all the colleagues who participated in the initial meeting to plan this book in Stockholm in 1991 and again at the Budapest Meeting in 1992 and who subsequently prepared contributions for it. These are the authors of the respective chapters and with them we hope that our readers will appreciate this effort. The tumultuous 'Year of the Six Emperors' saw Gordian raised to the purple at just thirteen years of age, becoming the youngest emperor in the Empire’s history at a time when the borders were threatened by the powerful Sassanid Persians and the Goths, among others. Gordian died on a campaign against the Persians, either in battle or possibly murdered by his own men. Philip, succeeded Gordian, made peace with Shapur I and returned to Italy. His reign encompassed the spectacular celebration of Rome’s millennium in 248 but the wars in the Balkans and East together with crippling taxation led to mutinies and rebellions. Philip and his brother had until then fought successfully against the Persians and others but this did not save Philip, who was killed by a usurper’s forces at the Battle of Verona in 249. He had been Rome’s first Christian emperor and the author considers why it was fifty years before she had another. |

Knop, 2013-06-29 A backward glance of the many new industries that emerged in the 20th century would surely recognize communications, automobile, aircraft, computer and several others that have had a global impact on world economy. Yet another industry, and an often neglected industry, made its debut early in the 20th century - the Plastics Industry. The Plastics Industry owes its identity to the brilliance of Dr. Leo Hendrik Baekeland (1863 -1944). He discovered the technique, currently in use to this day, to manu facture highly crosslinked plastics by transforming monomerk and/or oligomeric phenolic materials into attractive phenolic products. Today phenolics represent one of the many different types of com mercially available plastics (thermoset and thermoplastic). Phenolics are distinguished by a broad array of application areas that utilize phenolics as compared to other thermoset or thermoplastic resins. Thermoplastic resins transformed into molded products, films or synthetic fibers (polypropylene as an example) are rapidly recognized as plastics whereas the phenolic resin is a component in a material system and the identity of the phenolic resin within the system is not easily identified as plastic. These systems consist of fiber reinforced composites, honeycomb paneling, electrical Iaminates, acid resistant coatings, wood panels, glass fiber or rock wool insulation. Phenolic resin identity is hidden and has little consumer recognition or identity. |

It took place at the University of California, Santa Barbara, from August 22-26, 1993. This was the thirteenth annual CRYPTO conference, all of which have been held at UCSB. The conference was very enjoyable and ran very of the General Chair, Paul Van Oorschot. smoothly, largely due to the efforts It was a pleasure working with Paul throughout the months leading up to the conference. There were 136 submitted papers which were considered by the Program Committee. Of these, 38 were selected for presentation at the conference. There was also one invited talk at the conference, presented by Miles Smid, the title of which was “A Status Report On the Federal Government Key Escrow System.” The conference also included the customary Rump Session, which was presided over by Whit Diffie in his usual inimitable fashion. Thanks again to Whit for organizing and running the Rump session. This year, the Rump Session included an interesting and lively panel discussion on issues pertaining to key escrowing. Collier, Ann Gasper and Robert G. Wolf of Southern Illinois University. 1 They had, most unfortunately, failed to find a publisher - not, it appears, because of overall lack of merit of the essays, but because of the expense of producing the collection, lack of institutional subsidization, and doubts of publishers as to whether an expensive collection of essays on such an esoteric, not to say deviant, subject would sell. We thought that the collection of essays was still (even after more than six years in the publishing trade limbo) well worth publishing, that the subject would remain undeservedly esoteric in North America while work on it could not find publishers (it is not so esoteric in academic circles in Continental Europe, Latin America and the Antipodes) and, quite important, that we could get the collection published, and furthermore, by resorting to local means, published comparatively cheaply. It is indeed no ordinary collection. It contains work by pioneers of the main types of broadly relevant systems, and by several of the most innovative non-classical logicians of the present flourishing logical period. We have slowly re-edited and reorganised the collection and made it camera-ready. |
