Die Krise äußert sich in einer sinkenden Anzahl aktiver Private Equity-Gesellschaften (PEG) sowie einem Rückgang des eingeworbenen Kapitals. Gleichzeitig ist eine Verschiebung der Investitionsschwerpunkte vom Early-Stage-Bereich in den Later-Stage-Bereich festzustellen. Dabei lässt sich insbesondere eine Zunahme von Buyout-Finanzierungen beobachten, weshalb die EVCA das Jahr 2002 zum Jahr der Buyout ernannte. Allein im Jahr 2002 stieg der Anteil von Buyout-Finanzierungen an den Bruttoinvestitionen von 37,3% auf 45,7%. Während der Neunziger Jahre lag der Anteil von Buyout-Finanzierungen stabil, aber deutlich niedriger bei ca. 20%. Eine Fortsetzung dieses Trends wird auch zukünftig erwartet. Eine wichtige Ursache dafür ist die immer noch schwache Eigenkapitalausstattung mittelständischer Unternehmen im internationalen Vergleich. Die geringe Eigenkapitalquote könnte bei restriktiver Kreditvergabe von Banken aufgrund des Basel II-Akkords sowie der aktuellen Bankenkrise zu Finanzierungsschwierigkeiten führen und damit Beteiligungsfinanzierungen auch für mittelständische Unternehmer interessant machen. Ein weiterer Grund für die steigende Bedeutung von Buyout ist die Problematik fehlender familieninterner Nachfolger bei Generationswechseln von Familienunternehmen, die durch Buyout gelöst werden kann. Schließlich bietet die immer noch nicht abgeschlossene Restrukturierung deutscher Konzerne Potenzial für die Durchführung von Buyout. Denn Buyout stellen häufig eine adäquate Methode zur Ausgliederung von Geschäftsbereichen dar. Aufgrund der hohen und weiter steigenden Bedeutung von Buyout für die Private Equity-Branche stellt sich die Frage, inwieweit die betriebswirtschaftliche Forschung diesem Umstand Rechnung trägt. Zwar gibt es mittlerweile umfassende Literatur zu den Grundlagen sowie gesellschafts- und steuerrechtlichen Aspekten von Buyout-Transaktionen.
