translate english to venezuela: Spanish-English Contrasts Melvin Stanley Whitley, 2002 An invaluable text in language and linguistics because it has a unique scope: a one-volume description of the Spanish language and its differences from English, and ranges from pronunciation and grammar to word meaning, language use, and social and dialectical variation. Designed for survey courses in Spanish linguistics with technical concepts explained in context for beginners in the field, Spanish/English Contrasts brings out the ways in which insights into the two languages have evolved as scholars have built on the work and research of others in the field. A bilingual glossary of linguistic terms is provided to facilitate discussion in either language. This second edition is thoroughly updated to incorporate insights and issues that have come to the fore from the explosion of research in the past twenty-five years in all of the areas covered by the book. It includes an expanded bibliography and index, and adds new exercises for student application and class discussion. Its approach remains broadly based however, in order to accommodate a range of areas and data rather than focusing narrowly on one single theory or research area, and it continues to emphasize implications for language teaching, translation, and other practical applications. |

translate english to venezuela: Language Contact. Volume 2 Jeroen Darquennes, Joseph C. Salmons, Wim Vandenbussche, 2025-04-21 Targeting a full range of students and scholars, this volume provides a total of 50 chapters illustrating the linguistic dynamics and the dynamics of (inter)individual, and societal language contact as well as the dynamics of multidisciplinary language contact studies. Fueled by a wealth of data from a rich variety of contact situations, its geographically balanced case studies are governed by the triangulation between a focus on language structure and change, a sincere drive of sociopolitical and academic agency, and the confrontation with an everyday reality that can be unkind to (and ignorant of) those two factors. The volume clearly demonstrates the social relevance of our trade in a time burdened with ecolinguistic challenges. |
translate english to venezuela: Believing and Acting G. Scott Davis, 2012-03-15 How should religion and ethics be studied if we want to understand what people believe and why they act the way they do? In the 1980s and '90s postmodernist worries about led to debates that turned on power, truth, and relativism. Since the turn of the century scholars impressed by 'cognitive science' have introduced concepts drawn from evolutionary biology, neurosciences, and linguistics in the attempt to provide 'naturalist' accounts of religion. Deploying concepts and arguments that have their roots in the pragmatism of C. S. Peirce, Believing and Acting argues that both approaches are misguided and largely unhelpful in answering the questions that matter: What did those people believe then? How does it relate to what these people want to do now? What is our evidence for our interpretations? Pragmatic inquiry into these questions recommends an approach that questions grand theories, advocates a critical pluralism about religion and ethics that defies disciplinary boundaries in the pursuit of the truth. Rationality, on a pragmatic approach, is about solving particular problems in medias res, thus there is no hard and fast line to be drawn between inquiry and advocacy; both are essential to negotiating day to day life. The upshot is an approach to religion and ethics in which inquiry looks much like the art history of Michael Baxandall and advocacy like the art criticism of Arthur Danto. |

translate english to venezuela: Venezuelan Bust, Baseball Boom Milton H. Jamail, 2008-01-01 Though Venezuela is sandwiched between two soccer-mad countries Brazil and Colombia baseball is its national pastime and passion. Yet until the late 1980s few professional teams actively scouted and developed players there. This book is about the man who changed all that and brought Venezuela into Major League Baseball in a major way. While other teams were looking to the Dominican Republic for new talent, Houston Astros' scout Andrés Reiner saw an untapped niche in Venezuela. Venezuelan Bust, Baseball Boom recounts how, over the next fifteen years, Reiner signed nearly one hundred players, nineteen of whom reached the majors. The stories of these players among them Bobby Abreu, Johán Santana, Melvin Mora, Carlos Guillén, and Freddy García are interwoven with Reiner s own, together creating a fascinating portrait of a curious character in the annals of sports and a richly textured picture of the opening of Venezuela as baseball s new frontier. Countless interviews broaden and deepen the story s insights into how the scouting system works, how Reiner worked within it, and how his efforts have affected the sport of baseball in Venezuela and the significance of Venezuela in the world of Major League Baseball. |

translate english to venezuela: Oswald in New Orleans Harold Weisberg, 2013-09-01 Harold Weisberg was foremost among the early trailblazers who saw the inadequacy of the Warren Report’s solution to the crime of the century. He tirelessly petitioned the government and used the courts to force release of withheld documents, and wrote dozens of books and manuscripts on the subject. Oswald in New Orleans focuses on the strange 1963 summer during which Lee Harvey Oswald was in New Orleans, where his apparent “lone nut” pro-Castro activities have puzzled researchers for many years. This book discusses the many odd stories and colorful personalities of the Oswald–New Orleans scene: Dean Andrews, David Ferrie, Sylvia Odio, Orest Pena, Carlos Bringuier, Loran Hall, and others. Published in the early days of the ill-fated Garrison investigation, this book remains an important analysis of those stories and persons. Taken in the context of Weisberg’s numerous books on the subject, Oswald’s time in New Orleans brings clarity to the events that would follow. Originally published in 1967, Oswald in New Orleans is no less the startling and shocking narrative today than it was when first released, and the painstakingly thorough investigative research and analysis that Weisberg has conducted makes his work essential to understanding the assassination of John F. Kennedy. |

translate english to venezuela: Zarzuela Janet Lynn Sturman, 2000 Once the most popular form of Spanish entertainment short of the bullfight, the zarzuela boasts a long history of bridging the categories of classical and popular art. It is neither opera nor serious drama, yet it requires both trained singers and good actors. The content is neither purely folkloric nor high art; it is too popular for some and too classical for others. In Zarzuela, Janet L. Sturman assesses the political as well as the musical significance of this chameleon of music-drama. Sturman traces the zarzuela's colorful history from its seventeenth-century origins as a Spanish court entertainment to its adaptation in Spain's colonial outposts in the New World. She examines Cuba's pivotal role in transmitting the zarzuela to Latin America and the Caribbean and draws distinctions among the ways in which various Spanish-speaking communities have reformulated zarzuela, combining elements of the Spanish model with local characters, music, dances, and political perspectives. The settings Sturman considers include Argentina, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and the American cities of El Paso, Miami, and New York. Sturman also demonstrates how the zarzuela plays a role in defining American urban ethnicity. She offers a glimpse into two longstanding theaters in New York, Repertorio Espa ol and the Thalia Spanish Theatre, that have fostered the tradition of zarzuela, mounting innovative productions and cultivating audiences. Sturman constructs a profile of the audience that supports modern zarzuela and examines the extensive personal network that sustains it financially. Just as the zarzuela afforded an opportunity in the past for Spaniards to assert their individuality in the face of domination by Italian and central European musical standards, it continues to stand for a distinctive Hispanic legacy. Zarzuela provides a major advance in recognizing the enduring cultural and social significance of this resilient and adaptable genre. |
translate english to venezuela: Multilingual Baseball Brendan H. O'Connor, 2023-04-06 What can baseball teach us about language, culture, and society? The first book-length exploration of multilingualism in professional sports, Multilingual Baseball provides an intimate look at language diversity in the transnational world of baseball. Based on extensive interviews and observations in the US and the Dominican Republic, the book foregrounds the voices of current and former players, coaches, front office personnel, international scouts, language teachers, and interpreters, with baseball experience in the Dominican Republic, Cuba, South Korea, Taiwan, and the United States. Engaging a wide range of foundational concepts within sociolinguistics, applied linguistics, and linguistic and cultural anthropology, the analysis reveals the relevance of bilingualism to the social and economic realities of professional baseball as a transnational business. It also illuminates day-to-day encounters with linguistic and cultural difference on the field, in clubhouses, and in communities around the world. Through this linguistic lens, the book delves into social issues in diverse societies by connecting interactions within baseball to the broader challenges of immigration, race, and demographic change. While grounded in the experiences of Spanish and English speakers in US Major League Baseball organizations, Multilingual Baseball presents the transnational game as a microcosm of globalizing societies around the world, inviting readers to consider what we can learn from the bilingual understandings and misunderstandings that arise in everyday baseball interactions. |

translate english to venezuela: Shaggy Dog Tales Paul Ress, 2006-10-24 The stories and the anecdotes in this book illustrate two kinds of journalism over a period of more than half a century. During a span of almost 30 years as a journalist for major media, I was convinced that there was no life after journalism. Even losing my job as a reporter three times did not change my mind. What did alter my outlook was the discovery of international and non-governmental environmental and public health organizations in and around the United Nations in Geneva that were doing good things. Writing about their activities and seeing them reported not in one newspaper or magazine but in hundreds of publications and on radio and television stations around the world, was a satisfying experience. It was journalistic writing, and, sometimes, the press releases and feature stories really did make things move. Two examples. A simple World Health Organization press release on arsenic in the drinking water in Bangladesh led to an investigation on the spot by a reporter of a major American newspaper. His syndicated story caught the attention of a Nordic government which agreed to finance efforts to try to rid the wells of the arsenic. Another storyfor UNICEF this timeconcerned premature or underweight babies in Colombia in a region where hospitals had no incubators. The mother carried her baby close to her body beneath her sweater or dress rather like a kangaroo with a baby in her pouch. It saved their lives. They came to be known as kangaroo babies. A respected, large-circulation British newspaper read the feature, sent a team with a doctor, a nurse, a reporter, and a photographer to Colombia, and published a big cover story on the technique in their Sunday magazine. Articles about kangaroo babies keep popping up here and there, and the kangaroo system has spread. BOOK REVIEW From The Guardian (British Mass-Circulation Daily) by Simon Hoggart Saturday December 23, 2006 You would think, with 200,000 books published in this country every year (of which around half are real books, the kind you might find in bookshops, as opposed to academic theses, instruction manuals etc), there would be no call for any more. Yet writing a book is something people feel an urgent need to do, like having children, which also costs a lot of money. Now, thanks to computers, what was once called the vanity press is inexpensive and booming. An author who's prepared to tour bookshops, give readings, get articles in the local press and so on, can sell quite a few copies - hundreds or even thousands. Some are lethally dull. Others are full of intriguing gems. You could compile a wonderful book just from the anecdotes about the famous. Take the American journalist Paul Ress who has been based in France almost all his working life and has produced Shaggy Dog Tales, jammed with stories about Miro, Picasso, Graham Greene, the Duke of Windsor and Le Corbusier. At a lunch in Paris the playwright Eugene Ionesco told him the true story of the Unknown Romanian Soldier. The Romanians were the only country without their own. So late in the first world war they assembled the corpses of 10 freshly killed, unidentified men. The youngest in a troop of scouts was asked to choose one to be the Unknown Soldier. After he made his selection the press asked him why. Because it was my father, the boy said. Ionesco added: Later a Bucharest paper had a headline: Son of Unknown Soldier dies in Danube canoeing accident. It's a nice, gentle, funny book. You could find it through www.Xlibris.com. |

From the nineteenth to the twenty-first century, the chapters focus on issues ranging from the role of translation in the construction of national identities to the challenges of translation in the current digital age. The first of its kind in English, this Handbook will shed light on different translation approaches and invite a rethinking of intercultural and interlingual exchanges from Latin American viewpoints.
