  unica zurn: Universe is Flux John Tadao Teramoto, Yūsaku Tawara, Stephen Addiss, David Rosand, 2011 Recognized in Japan as a connoisseur, collector, and proprietor of a famous folk art shop in Tokyo, Tawara Yusaku returned to painting late in life and had a single show in London before his death in 2004. Universe Is Flux is the first examination of his accomplishments within the context of Asian and contemporary painting. Tawara's artistic vision was highly influenced by Buddhist concepts of cosmology and space. His works appear at first glance to be the result of bold, powerful strokes with a large brush, but close examination reveals each large stroke is composed of innumerable tiny strokes, dots, and splashes representing the constantly changing energy of the universe. Tawara rejected representational art and struggled instead to paint ultimate reality. The techniques that Tawara utilized to create his art resulted in a body of work that not only expresses his views of the universe but is also aesthetically powerful and beautiful.   unica zurn: A Gothic Soul Jiří Karásek ze Lvovic, 2015 A Gothic Soul is the most acclaimed work of Czech Decadent prose. Expressing concerns that are unique to the Czech movement while alluding creatively and ironically to Joris-Karl Huysman's Against Nature, the novella is set in Prague, which is portrayed as a dead city, a city peopled by shades, who, like the protagonist âe a nihilist and the last scion of a noble line âe are only a dim reflection of the cityâe(tm)s medieval splendor. The man lives in a dreamworld, the labyrinth of his soul giving rise to visions. In his quest for meaning, he walks the city, often hallucinating, while pondering questions of religious fervor and loss of faith, the vanity of life, his own sense of social alienation, human identity and its relationship to a âeoenation,âe the miserable situation of the Czechs under Habsburg rule, and Pragueâe(tm)s loss of its soul on the cusp of modernity as old sections, such as much of the squalid Jewish Quarter, are demolished to make way for gaudy new buildings and streets. With a history of madness running in the family and afraid the same fate awaits him, he ultimately retreats into seclusion, preferring the monastic way of life as the epitome of unity and wholeness and a tonic to present-day fragmentation. Yet Karásek eschews the mawkish, opting instead for darker tones that play with the tropes and motifs of Decadence while conflating the same-sex desires of his protagonist, the fatalism and futility of such an existence within the social construct of the day, with concerns for the dual fates of his nation and city.Given his importance for Czech literature and for European Decadence, very little of Karásek's work has been translated into English. Kirsten Lodge included translations of his poetry in Solitude, Vanity, Night: An Anthology of Czech Decadent Poetry, and her translations of some of his shorter prose have been made available online. This is the first time A Gothic Soul, or any full-length work of Karásek's prose, has been translated into English.

For many reasons, her art tends to be categorized as art brut, of which she is one of the most mysterious and magical representatives. Her work, which is highly appreciated internationally as well, feels like a herbarium of fantastical extraterrestrial plants or a unique, imaginary world created using always newly discovered and often surprising techniques. This extraordinary book presents a representative selection of Zemánková's drawings, collages, objects and assemblages, accompanied by texts written by experts and researchers who admire her art and who, each in their own way, try to understand the inherent mystery of her art. Aberth, Rachel Sadvary Zebro, 2019 Agnes Pelton: Desert Transcendentalist' will be the first survey of this under recognized American painter in over 22 years. Her distinctive paintings could be described as metaphysical landscapes rooted in the California desert near Cathedral City. Pelton chiefly drew on her own inspirations, superstitions, and beliefs to exemplify emotional states. The publication seeks to clarify the artists significance and role within the cannon of American Modernism but also against the legacy of European abstraction. It contextualizes her work against her contemporaries, Marsden Hartley and Georgia O'Keeffe, and their distinct versions of American spiritual modernism. Pelton's highly symbolic paintings were inspired by religious sources ranging from Theosophy and Agni Yoga to the spiritual teachings of Dane Rudhyar and Will Levington Comfort. Over three decades she devoted herself to painting spiritual abstractions, which conveyed her light message to the world
