virginia beach healthcare rehab center: Outsmart Your Pain! Lisa Barr M D, 2018-05-06 Does pain prevent you from living the full and joyous life you want and deserve? If so, you're not alone. Tens of millions of people suffer from acute or chronic pain that decreases their quality of life. Have you seen doctors and other health care professionals looking for answers to alleviate your suffering, with little or no lasting relief? Have you tried to rely on pain-killing drugs or even invasive surgeries without any significant improvement in your levels of pain? If you answered yes to any of these questions, Dr. Lisa Barr wants to help. In Outsmart Your Pain!, Dr. Barr shares innovative solutions to help you overcome your pain. Dr. Barr's goal in this book is to empower you to focus your energy on the underlying issues that cause pain rather than focusing only on pain as a symptom. Ideally, we all want to live pain free and drug free. Here's what we know; pain is pervasive. It is associated with a wide range of injuries and disease and its impact is tremendous. As a symptom, pain is tricky because it means many different things to different people. Defined as a complex physical and emotional experience, it is true that no two people experience pain in the same way. Neuroscience says we interpret our world through our senses. Yet, interpreting pain is confusing because we feel it in our body yet we cannot see it or touch it. In short, pain is the invisible intersection of the affairs of the heart through our emotions, our mind through our thoughts and beliefs and our body through our posture and physiology. Identifying our physical complaints is just the beginning. To obtain lasting relief of pain, we must take a close look at our lifestyle, posture, diet, environment, relationships and habits. Additionally, we must also assess our emotional investment in pain as well as become clear about our conscious and unconscious thoughts and beliefs about pain. Ultimately, this process opens us up to changing what needs to be changed and this is the key to successful resolution of pain. When seen from this broader perspective, it becomes clear why the answers to pain might not revealed on imaging studies and why some people don't get better with certain treatments. After graduating with an Architectural degree, John was hired by the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard in their Structural Division, to assist in renovating and updating old submarines. Later he joined the Air Force for two years to fulfill his AFROTC contract. Following his AF tour, John found a job with a small Architectural Firm that was designing Churches and Schools. John is very proud of the design work he did on the Church at 70th and Dodge in Omaha. John spent most of his waking moments studying for the State Architectural Licensing Board exams, and was awarded his license in 1959. John was offered a great job with HDR, a large Architectural & Engineering firm in Omaha. He was selected as project Architect along with Perkins and Will, Architects, to design the new Nebraska Methodist Hospital. Six years later, John's mentor Dr Louis Block, was in Omaha and was asked to review the plans for the new Methodist Hospital. Dr Block was so impressed with these plans, that he offered John and his partner a contract to come to Silver Spring, MD, open an office to and plan and design Hospitals. John and his family moved to Silver Spring in 1966. John opened his own office and this was the beginning of a great career in the design and planning of over 150 Hospitals and all types of health care facilities. For 23 years, John taught the future Hospital Administrators at George Washington University with labs about hospital construction. The American Institute of Architects awarded him a Fellowship for all of his teaching activities. After his long 60-year career, he decided to retire and write this book, and hopefully help some younger persons navigate through the long trip to a successful career in Architecture. John gives advice after each chapter on the steps to move up in this profession. Just maybe his advice will help you along the way.

virginia beach healthcare rehab center: A Common Struggle Patrick J. Kennedy, Stephen Fried, 2016-09-13 **New York Times Bestseller** Patrick J. Kennedy, the former congressman and youngest child of Senator Ted Kennedy, details his personal and political battle with mental illness and addiction, exploring mental health care's history in the country alongside his and every family's private struggles. On May 5, 2006, the New York Times ran two stories, “Patrick Kennedy Crashes Car into Capitol Barrier” and then, several hours later, “Patrick Kennedy Says He'll Seek Help for Addiction.” It was the first time that the popular Rhode Island congressman had publicly disclosed his addiction to prescription painkillers, the true extent of his struggle with bipolar disorder and his plan to immediately seek treatment. That could have been the end of his career, but instead it was the beginning. Since then, Kennedy has become the nation’s leading advocate for mental health and substance abuse care, research and policy both in and out of Congress. And ever since passing the landmark Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act--and after the death of his father, leaving Congress--he has been changing the dialogue that surrounds all brain diseases. A Common Struggle weaves together Kennedy's private and professional narratives, echoing Kennedy's philosophy that for him, the personal is political and the political personal. Focusing on the years from his 'coming out' about suffering from bipolar disorder and addiction to the present day, the book examines Kennedy's journey toward recovery and reflects on Americans' propensity to treat mental illnesses as family secrets. Beyond his own story, though, Kennedy creates a roadmap for equality in the mental health community, and outlines a bold plan for the future of mental health policy. Written with award-winning healthcare journalist and best-selling author Stephen Fried, A Common Struggle is both a cry for empathy and a call to action.
