  tung top: A Cultural History of Civil Examinations in Late Imperial China Benjamin A. Elman, 2000-03-22 In this multidimensional analysis, Benjamin A. Elman uses over a thousand newly available examination records from the Yuan, Ming, and Ch'ing dynasties, 1315-1904, to explore the social, political, and cultural dimensions of the civil examination system, one of the most important institutions in Chinese history. For over five hundred years, the most important positions within the dynastic government were usually filled through these difficult examinations, and every other year some one to two million people from all levels of society attempted them. Covering the late imperial system from its inception to its demise, Elman revises our previous understanding of how the system actually worked, including its political and cultural machinery, the unforeseen consequences when it was unceremoniously scrapped by modernist reformers, and its long-term historical legacy. He argues that the Ming-Ch'ing civil examinations from 1370 to 1904 represented a substantial break with T'ang-Sung dynasty literary examinations from 650 to 1250. Late imperial examinations also made Tao Learning, Neo-Confucian learning, the dynastic orthodoxy in official life and in literati culture. The intersections between elite social life, popular culture, and religion that are also considered reveal the full scope of the examination process throughout the late empire.

In this book, I hope to guide my fellow colleagues into the intricacies of applying Master Tung Acupuncture in the clinic. Since I am also a practicing acupuncturist and deal with pain, women's health, and internal medicine problems quite frequently, I am sharing my clinical experience in this book and the secret of creating the protocols that I use daily, with modification. There are many books on Master Tung's Acupuncture which introduce all of the 740 Tung family points. but often these books may be too much for the beginner and do not let the beginner grasp useful concepts or how to use Master Tung's Acupuncture immediately and effectively. Most acupuncturists simply add the Tung points to their already memorized TCM Acupuncture point prescriptions, and as a result, make a mess out of their acupuncture. They do not have a simple and elegant rationale for using the system. In my teaching of Master Tung's Acupuncture, I always choose points that are painless, easily accessible, and have powerful immediate results.
  tung top: Strangers Among Us David C. Woodman, 1995-09-07 In 1868 American explorer Charles Francis Hall interviewed several Inuit hunters who spoke of strangers travelling through their land. Hall immediately jumped to the conclusion that the hunters were talking about survivors of the Franklin expedition and set off for the Melville Peninsula, the location of many of the sightings, to collect further stories and evidence to support his supposition. His theory, however, was roundly dismissed by historians of his day, who concluded that the Inuit had been referring to other white explorers, despite significant discrepancies between the Inuit evidence and the records of other expeditions. In Strangers Among Us Woodman re-examines the Inuit tales in light of modern scholarship and concludes that Hall's initial conclusions are supported by Inuit remembrances, remembrances that do not correlate with other expeditions but are consistent with Franklin's.
