Koc, David Nacchae, Christof Paar, 2003-06-30 These are the proceedings of CHES 2001, the third Workshop on Cryptographic Hardware and Embedded Systems. The ?rst two CHES Workshops were held in Massachusetts, and this was the ?rst Workshop to be held in Europe. There was a large number of submissions this year, and in response the technical program was extended to 2 1/2 days. As is evident by the papers in these proceedings, many excellent submissions were made. Selecting the papers for this year’s CHES was not an easy task, and weregretthatwehadtorejectseveralveryinterstingpapersduetotheac l kof time. There were 66 submitted contributions this year, of which 31, or 47%, were selected for presentation. If we look at the number of submitted papers at CHES ’99 (42 papers) and CHES 2001 (51 papers), we observe a steady increase. We interpret this as a continuing need for a workshop series which combines theory and practice for integrating strong security features into modern communications and computer applications. In addition to the submitted contributions, Ross Anderson from Cambridge University, UK, and Adi Shamir from The Weizmann Institute, Israel, gave invited talks. As in previous years, the focus of the workshop is on all aspects of cryp- graphichardwareandembeddedsystemdesign.Ofspecialinterestwerecont- butions that describe new methods for e?cient hardware implementations and high-speed software for embedded systems, e.g., smart cards, microprocessors, DSPs, etc. CHES also continues to be an important forum for new theoretical andpractical?ndingsintheimportantandgrowing?eldofside-channelattacks. |

Austin, 2022-05-03 The Baboquivari Mountains, long considered to be a sacred space by the Tohono O’odham people who are native to the area, are the westernmost of the so-called Sky Islands. The mountains form the border between the floristic regions of Chihuahua and Sonora. This encyclopedic work describes the flora of this unique area in detail. It includes descriptions, identifications, ecology, and extensive etymologies of plant names in European and indigenous languages. Daniel Austin also describes pollination biology and seed dispersal and explains how plants in the area have been used by humans, beginning with Native Americans. The term “sky island” was first used by Weldon Heald in 1967 to describe mountain ranges that are separated from each other by valleys of grassland or desert. The valleys create barriers to the spread of plant species in a way that is similar to the separation of islands in an ocean. The 70,000-square-mile Sky Islands region of southeastern Arizona, southwestern New Mexico, and northwestern Mexico is of particular interest to botanists because of its striking diversity of plant species and habitats. With more than 3,000 species of plants, the region offers a surprising range of tropical and temperate zones. Although others have written about the region, this is the first book to focus exclusively on the plant life of the Baboquivari Mountains. The book offers an introduction to the history of the region, along with a discussion of human influences, and includes a useful appendix that lists all of the plants known to be growing in the Baboquivari Mountain chain. |

This book provided an updated classification system of Orchidaceae with newly recorded and published species in China and new combinations. 1026 species in 157 genera of native species in China are included, about half of which are newly recorded or published species in China in the last two decades. Indexes to genera and species are included. For each species, one to four photos, most of which were taken by the authors, are utilized to illustrate habitats, morphological characters, and phenology. Furthermore, the geographic distribution of them also demonstrated in a map. This book can be used as a reference for researchers working on Orchidaceae, as well as practitioners in the horticulture community. |

Beginning in 1890 what would become nearly a half century of ethnographic research among members of this community, homeopathic doctor and amateur anthropologist John W. Hudson witnessed the aftermath of their dislocation and dispersal from the valley following the arrival of non-indigenous settlers. Although never published, his fieldnotes contained an unparalleled dataset on plant use by a single local indigenous community in California. In this richly illustrated monograph the author presents and interprets this historical ethnobotanical information in order to provide new insights into Potter Valley Pomo society and its relationship to the Northern California landscape. |

The technology to fabricate such sensors has grown in the past few decades from a skilful activity to a mature area of scientific research and technological development. In this process, the use of silicon-based techniques has appeared to be of crucial importance, as it introduced standardized (mass) fabrication techniques, created the possibility of integrated electronics, allowed for new transduction principles, and enabled the realization of micromechanical structures for sensing or actuation. Such micromechanical structures are particularly well-suited to realize complex microsystems that improve the performance of individual sensors. Currently, a variety of sensor areas ranging from optical to magnetic and from micromechanical to (bio)chemical sensors has reached a high level of sophistication. In this MESA Monograph the proceedings of the Dutch Sensor Conference, an initiative of the Technology Foundation (STW), held at the University of Twente on March 2-3, 1998, are compiled. It comprises all the oral and poster contributions of the conference, and gives an excellent overview of the state of the art of Dutch sensor research and development.
