McCauley, 1981 The particulate matter of thirty water samples collected near the Waterway Experiment Station in Vicksburg, Mississippi, have been characterized. The investigation included ten samples from each of three different locations: the Mississippi River, Yazu River, and Brown's Lake. Characterization was conducted using particle size distributions, surface areas, scanning electron microscopy, differential thermal analysis, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, X-ray diffraction, and emission spectroscopy. Major differences were noted between all three powder populations.

A broadband transformer was required to perform the necessary impedance transformation between transmitter and filter at a p wer level of 2500 watts. The approach given here concerns the design and analysis of eleven- and thirteenelement, linearly tapered, M-derived, low-passfilter, lumped-element transformers. The results of tests conducted on an experimental model of an eleven-element transformer constructed of receiver-type components are compared with the analytical data. (Author).

In No Sure Victory, Army officer and historian Gregory Daddis looks far deeper into the Army's techniques for measuring military success and presents a much more complicated-and disturbing-account of the American misadventure in Indochina. Daddis shows how the US Army, which confronted an unfamiliar enemy and an even more unfamiliar form of warfare, adopted a massive, and eventually unmanageable, system of measurements and formulas to track the progress of military operations that ranged from pacification efforts to search-and-destroy missions. Hymer, 2001 An improved semiempirical method has been developed to estimate the static aerodynamics of configurations that use a trailing edge flap for control. The method is based on deflecting the full aft-located lifting surface an amount that allows the normal force coefficient to be equal to that generated by the deflected flap. A transfer in pitching moments and a modified axial force coefficient is arrived to complete the set of static aerodynamics . The method to give satisfactory results over the practical range that trailing edge flaps are contemplated for use. However, additional wind tunnel data is needed to refine and expand the applicability of the method. This is particularly true for transonic Mach numbers and for supersonic Mach numbers where the angle of attack and control deflection are of the same.

Helicopter air mobility began to develop in the Army from 1949 onwards. The outbreak of the Korean war assisted and accelerated the acceptance of greater helicopter air mobility within the Army. The Eisenhower period was a golden age for Army aviation, with rapid and extensive developments in air mobility doctrine and tactics. There was also a strong research and development effort to overcome the initial technological lag. These developments allowed the formation of the first air mobile division in 1965 to meet the growing demands of the Vietnam war. This work gives a new understanding of the process of military innovation. Moreover, this case study has important general implications for future military policy-making.
