uh-60 transmission: Comparison of Predicted and Measured Temperatures of UH-60A Helicopter Transmission Harold H. Coe, 1989 The 2109-kW (2828-hp) UH-60A Black Hawk helicopter transmission was one of the transmissions used to obtain an experimental data base. Component improvements or new transmission concepts can thus be evaluated by comparison with the established data. In this investigation the transmission was instrumented internally and tested over a range of operating conditions. The speed was varied from 50 to 100 percent of the full rated value, and the torque was varied from 10 to 100% of the full rated value. Temperatures of internal bearings and gears were measured. The computer program Planetsys was used to simulate the thermal performance of this transmission. The calculated temperatures were then compared with the corresponding measured values. The highest measured temperature was 405 K (270 F) on the outer ring of the high-speed input shaft roller bearing, at the 100% power condition. In general, the predicted temperatures compared very well with the measured values, most of them being within 5 kelvin (9 deg F). Specifically, the temperatures predicted for the single-row spherical roller planetary bearing averaged only about 4 kelvin (8 deg F) lower than the highest measured value. The main objective of this conference is to provide a forum for the most recent advances, addressing the challenges in modern mechanical transmissions. The conference proceedings address all aspects of gear and power transmission technology and a range of applications. The presented papers are catalogued into three main tracks, including design, simulation and testing, materials and manufacturing, and industrial applications. Coy, 1988 The NASA Lewis Research Center and the U.S. Army Aviation Systems Command share an interest in advancing the technology for helicopter propulsion systems. In particular, this paper presents highlights from that portion of the program in drive train technology and the related mechanical components. The major goals of the program are to increase life, reliability, and maintainability; reduce the weight, noise, and vibration; and maintain the relatively high mechanical efficiency of the gear train. The current activity emphasizes noise reduction technology and analytical code development followed by experimental verification. Selected significant advances in technology for transmissions are reviewed, including advanced configurations and new analytical tools. Finally, the plan for transmission research in the future is presented. |

uh-60 transmission: Development of a Full-scale Transmission Testing Procedure to Evaluate Advanced Lubricants David G. Lewicki, 1992 Experimental tests were performed on the OH-58A helicopter main-rotor transmission in the NASA Lewis 500-hp Helicopter Transmission Test Stand. The testing was part of a joint Navy/NASA/Army lubrication program to develop a separate lubricant for gearboxes that would improve life and load-carrying capacity. The goal of the experiments was to develop a testing procedure using a MIL-L-23699 base reference oil to fail certain transmission components, and then to run identical tests with improved lubricants and demonstrate improved performance. The tests were directed at failing components that have given the Navy problems because of marginal lubrication. These failures included mast-shaft bearing micropitting, sun gear and planet bearing fatigue, and spiral bevel gear scoring. More than 900 hr of total run time were accumulated for these tests. Some success was achieved in developing a testing procedure to produce sun gear and planet bearing fatigue failures. Only marginal success was achieved in producing mast-shaft bearing micropitting and spiral bevel gear scoring. |

uh-60 transmission: Uh-60 Black Hawk Pilot's Flight Operating Manual Department of the Army, 2011-04 Developed to replace the UH-1 Iroquis, Sikorsky s UH-60 Black Hawk first entered service in 1979. A four-blade, twin-engine, medium-lift utility helicopter, the UH-60 serves as the U.S. Army s primary tactical transport helicopter. Modified versions include models for the U.S. Navy and Air Force, and specialized versions including the UH-60C (modified for Command and Control missions), EH-60A (electronic systems operations and electronic warfare), and the UH-60Q (medical transport). Two major variants of the Black Hawk currently exist: the UH-60L and UH-60M. The UH-60L incorporates improvements to the basic design that provide more power and lifting capability, as well as automatic flight control. The newer UH-60M features upgraded engines, improved rotor blades, and state-of-the-art flight controls that will allow the helicopter s service life to extend to 2020 and beyond. Over 2500 Black Hawks have been built, and nearly 1000 more are currently on order. Black Hawks have seen combat service for the U.S. Military in Grenada, Panama, Somalia, Afghanistan and Iraq. Other nations also employ the UH-60 including Brazil, Colombia, Israel, Mexico, Taiwan, Australia, Japan, and Turkey.
