This conference was organised jointly by the League of Arab States and the International Organization for Migration, and brought together representatives of governments and international organisations, academics and practitioners to consider how migration affects, and is in turn affected by, the countries and peoples of the region. Issues discussed include: international migration and the challenges of globalisation; Arab migration patterns in the Mashreq, Maghreb and Gulf regions; sources of remittances; the exodus of skilled labour and its impact on development; a study of Egyptian return migrants; human rights and foreign contract labour; and the links of Arab 'diasporas' to their countries of origin. |
