the warplanes: Modern Chinese Warplanes Andreas Rupprecht, Tom Cooper, 2012-12-19 Much of the fascination that Chinese military aviation holds for the analyst and enthusiast stems from the thick veil of secrecy that surrounds it. This uniquely compact yet comprehensive directory serves as a magnificently illustrated, in-depth analysis and directory of modern Chinese air power. It is organized in three parts: the most important military aircraft and their weapons found in Chinese service today; aircraft markings and serial number systems; and orders of battle for the People's Liberation Army Air Force and Naval Air Force. The study includes the latest developments emerging from behind the 'Bamboo Curtain', including the J-20 stealth fighter program and other indigenous projects that are equipping a rapidly modernizing air arm. The centerpiece consists of almost 100 fully illustrated pages detailing the organizational structure of the Air Force and Naval Aviation, providing an easy-to-use review of all known flying units, their equipment and their markings. No other book has ever attempted to present this level of accuracy in this way: 'Modern Chinese Air Power' portrays the PLAAF and the PLANAF in a degree of detail that was previously unavailable. |
the warplanes: Warplanes to Alaska Blake W. Smith, 1998 This book describes the delivery of 8000 aircraft to Russia over a little known airway that extended from the U.S. through Northwestern Canada to Nome, Alaska. Warplanes to Alaska is a tribute to the hundreds of men and women who toiled in the harshest of climates to help decide the outcome of World War II. The author interviewed scores of Canadian, Russians and American veterans and acquired hundreds of photos in an effort to fully recount this amazing part of history. Details of the Russian portion of the airway and their military operations, long hidden by an impenetrable veil of official secrecy, are revealed here for the first time. Warplanes to Alaska will engage anyone interested in WWII, aviation or northern history. Could a subarctic wilderness airway traversing northwestern North America and the breadth of Russia be used to deliver thousands of warplanes? The needs of the beleaguered WW II ally demanded the attempt, despite the brutal climate, primitive facilities and wild terrain. This book describes the delivery of 8,000 aircraft to Russia over a little-known airway that extended from the U.S. through northwestern Canada to Nome, Alaska. The airway was cruel on man and machine as the twisted wrecks of fallen warplanes littering forest and muskeg bear testament. the warplanes: The Cave Amani Ballour, Rania Abouzeid, 2024-03-05 This searing memoir tells the story of a young doctor and activist who ran an underground hospital in Damascus, humanizing the enduring crisis in Syria. There is no one in Syria with a story like Dr. Amani Ballour's. The only woman to have ever run a wartime hospital, she saved her peers from the atrocities of war while contending with the patriarchal conservatism around her. Growing up in Assad’s Syria, Ballour knew she wanted to be more than a housewife, even as her siblings were married off in their teens. As the revolution unfolded, she volunteered at a local clinic and was thrown into the deep end of emergency medicine, where she found her voice. Among the facets of this powerful tale: Becoming a hospital director. Shielding children from a horrific sarin attack. Losing colleagues. Attempting to employ more women. Abandoning the hospital. Becoming a refugee. Moving forward. Amani Ballour is a game changer who, like Malala Yousafzai, will be remembered as one of history’s great heroines. Growing up in a closely confined society, she dared to dream—first of an education, then of a career—that allowed her to make her mark on the world and protect the country she loves. A passionately committed humanitarian, she is determined that others will escape the horrors she survived. |

the warplanes: The Vickers Viscount Nick Stroud, 2017-11-30 By some margin the most successful British medium-range airliner ever produced, the world-beating Viscount was a sublime combination of Vickers state-of-the-art postwar design and Rolls-Royces cutting-edge power-plant technology, both companies being at the very peak of their powers during the types genesis and evolution.Tracing its origins back to the wartime Brabazon Committee, the Viscount was one of several designs from various British aircraft manufacturers produced to fulfill the committees specifications for a fast, economical short- to medium-range airliner to satisfy the demands of the burgeoning postwar civil aviation market, which was predicted to grow at a healthy rate over the following decades. Vickers chief designer and Managing Director George Edwards was quick to respond, the result being the Dart turboprop-powered Vickers V.630, which made its first flight in July 1948, despite its future looking uncertain after British European Airways having twenty examples of ordered its chief rival, Airspeeds Ambassador, six months before. The Viscount nevertheless entered full service with BEA in 1953, much to the relief of its manufacturer, orders flooding in thereafter from numerous airlines and air forces all over the world. Ultimately, some 200 individual airlines, companies and organizations in more than eighty countries operated the dependable and, crucially, development-friendly Viscount over its long and distinguished career. This book tells the full story of the worlds first turboprop airliner, from its Brabazon Committee beginnings, through its early flight trials program and entry into service, to its almost unassailable position as the worlds number one medium-haul turboprop, including its astonishing breakthrough in the USA, where it single-handedly broke the big American manufacturers stranglehold on the airliner market. The types military career is also covered, as is its construction; also included in this volume are details of the numerous variants produced and those of the 444 built still surviving as exhibits today, along with twenty-four superb artworks by world-renowned aviation illustrator Juanita Franzi. |

the warplanes: Jeevra's Legacy Bruce E. Dunn, 2016-02-29 180,000 years have passed The Ark has returned with others from outside our galaxy. All the members of the conspiracy to save the Progeny and Furries are making bets on what they will find. Did the Progeny and Furries on the planets they seeded find the Box? If so, what did they do with it? Have any of them gone into space? Did any of them meet? If they did, what happened? What they do find are three things: surprises, galactic war, and eventually a journal entitled “Stories from the Tree”. The journal does not answer all their questions, but for each of the seeded planets, including Research 4, there is a story recounting the events surrounding the finding of the Box. Reading through the papers he found in the barn, the author was surprised to discover how significant the finding of the Box was on some planets and how insignificant it was on others. In all cases, however, drama surrounded the finding of the Box. Each story, in addition, gave those on the Ark a snapshot of the culture that had arisen on each of the planets during their absence. |

the warplanes: Stealth Warfare David Alexander, 2023-08-17 STEALTH WARFARE ... DECLASSIFIED Did Russia get secret US stealth technology from a downed Stealth Fighter? Did Nazi scientists working for Hitler's Third Reich develop stealth aircraft that were used as a basis for US stealth development? Is stealth technology creating new superweapons and superplanes for secret future war plans? Are UFOs connected with stealth? Do other countries, such as India, China, North Korea and Russia possess advanced stealth technologies? Has the US government secretly bought Russian stealth weaponry in order to study and reverse-engineer it? Are stealth aircraft really as stealthy as advertised? Or can they be detected and even tracked with available technology? These and other questions are answered in David Alexander's groundbreaking Stealth Warfare, the only book of its kind ever written, and one that tells secrets that the Defense Department, the CIA and agencies too covert to even mention want kept behind locked doors. In Stealth Warfare, a work that began as a classified study toward establishing developmental priorities toward the year 2030, bestselling author and globally recognized defense analyst and consultant David Alexander has framed the essence of stealth warfare from its mythological beginnings with the Trojan Horse to the modern technological marvels of stealth aircraft, submarines, and satellites. From the foreword by Col. John G. Lackey (Ret.), US Army: His groundbreaking Stealth Warfare is a singular achievement -- by far the most comprehensive open source reference to this field of military endeavor you will find – now and probably ever. Even with those classified, eyes-only portions removed for reasons of national security, it stands as an unparalleled reference source for the military professional as well as historians or the casual reader, and reads like the best fiction to boot In this epochal work, author David Alexander has skillfully outlined the history of stealth warfare, carefully weaving it into the American military genre by focusing on specific, carefully chosen warfare events, beginning with basic soldiering and ending with modern stealth aircraft, submarines, missiles, mines, drones, robots and the individual combatants’ battlefield equipment. Perhaps the most striking aspect of Alexander’s Stealth Warfare is his account of those technical realities that are so vividly described from the beginnings of high-altitude reconnaissance programs such as U-2 and SR-71, as well as overhead satellite surveillance programs like Corona. The understanding gained from the tactical histories and operational capabilities of the F-117A Nighthawk and B-2 strategic bomber provides an understanding of the vast superiority which the United States has in the air in regard to stealth technology. Unlock the secrets of stealth. Read David Alexander's Stealth Warfare... before it disappears. Reviews The push to develop an awesome array of superplanes and superweapons was to be crowned by Goering's thousand by thousand by thousand directive, which was Luftwaffe shorthand for the need to build an aircraft capable of flying a thousand kilometers carrying a thousand kilograms of weapons at a thousand kilometers per hour. This ambitious master plan went hand in hand with the effort to develop a nuclear weapon that the plane would carry. The main goal of a long-range intercontinental bomber of this type would be to strike the United States. -- Excerpt from Stealth Warfare by author David Alexander Lockheed aircraft designer Ben Rich, who worked for Clarence Kelly Johnson at Lockheed's Skunk Works wrote that a low observable aircraft has to be good in six disciplines -- radar, infrared, noise, smoke, contrails and visibility -- otherwise you flunk the course. That these considerations figured in postwar advanced aircraft designs is self-evident even just from the standpoint of fuselage designs -- stealth is right in front of you if you have eyes to see it. Though the aerospace industry and the Pentagon tried to keep stealth research secret stealth was always part of the program. As mentioned earlier, the bulk of the programs of this era were black, that is, clandestine projects. Even those few projects whose existence was grudgingly revealed, such as the U-2 and A-12/SR-71 Blackbird family spy planes, were never entirely declassified. As Churchill observed, in war the truth must sometimes be protected by a bodyguard of lies. Divulging information about critical capabilities of military aircraft can and will give adversaries valuable clues to countermeasures it can use against them. For this reason it has to be assumed that a great deal of deliberate disinformation surrounds even the most familiar of white world projects. Another reason for the secrecy that cloaked special postwar aircraft projects is that much of it was based on captured prototypes and research done by Nazi technicians, many of whom were now working in the US under government auspices and official protection. Public recognition of these facts so soon after the war would have aroused a national outcry. The intelligence and defense establishments who had put those ex-Nazis to work needed to avoid such a scenario. A cloak of secrecy also surrounds the technology transfer issues that gave rise to postwar advanced aircraft programs. At the close of World War Two the United States came out the winner in a race by the three victorious Allied powers to grab the cream of Nazi weapons technology and the Reich's brain trust. -- Excerpt from Stealth Warfare by author David Alexander British personnel, including RAF pilots on exchange programs, had been secretly involved in the Stealth Fighter programs run by the United States for a long time. Unknown to the public in both the US and UK, a secret protocol between Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher had led to a handful of key officials within the MOD gaining unprecedented access to the F-177A Stealth Fighter since the early 1980s. The partnership in stealth between the two transatlantic allies dates back to the Second World War where, as we've seen, the secrets of Operation Bodyguard, including Ultra and Enigma, were shared and cooperatively developed as a secret weapon against the Third Reich. Afterward, during the Cold War, the clandestine partnership in stealth continued against the Soviets and their East Bloc allies. -- Excerpt from Stealth Warfare by author David Alexander One of the most sensitive military secrets of the Cold War is that in the early 1960s the Macmillan government in the UK turned over to the Kennedy administration virtually everything that the British knew about stealth technology, and it was a considerable amount. The British didn't then have the material resources to develop this technology, but the US, with its vast, virtually unlimited industrial capacity and bottomless money pit, very much did. The stealth relationship entered a new, clandestine phase: the UK would henceforward be an insider in US stealth development. By the time the F-117A Stealth Fighter was rolled out of a hangar at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada for its first public showing on April 21, 1990, ending speculation concerning the existence of a secret invisible warplane developed by the US, British RAF pilots had been training on the F-117A for at least a year, indeed since the earliest prototypes were available for flight trials in 1982. Beyond this, the F-117A was evaluated for possible purchase by the RAF but turned down by MOD; at 10 Downing Street there were other plans concerning future acquisitions of stealth aircraft. -- Excerpt from Stealth Warfare by author David Alexander Regional disputes could be intensified by stealth because stealth enhances the lethality of conventional warfare and greases the slide towards escalation of the conflict. Once the conflict escalates it can become a vortex that draws bystanders in toward the center. The former bystanders, who are inevitably bigger powers, would then take sides and fight with one another. If all or most were stealth-capable, stealth-on-stealth warfare could produce a stalemate that might progress to the use of weapons of mass destruction as the conflict worsened. -- Excerpt from Stealth Warfare by author David Alexander |

the warplanes: Intrepid Bill White, Robert Gandt, 2009-09-08 The first official history of the legendary aircraft carrier that fought in World War II and Vietnam and continues to serve as a major air and space museum in New York City The USS Intrepid is a warship unlike any other. Since her launching in 1943, the 27,000-ton, Essex-class aircraft carrier has sailed into harm’s way around the globe. During World War II, she fought her way across the Pacific—Kwajalein, Truk, Peleliu, Formosa, the Philippines, Okinawa—surviving kamikaze and torpedo attacks and covering herself with glory. The famous ship endured to become a Cold War attack carrier, recovery ship for America’s first astronauts, and a three-tour combatant in Vietnam. In a riveting narrative based on archival research and interviews with surviving crewmen, authors Bill White and Robert Gandt take us inside the war in the Pacific. We join Intrepid’s airmen at the Battle of Leyte Gulf, in October 1944, as they gaze in awe at the apparitions beneath them: five Japanese battleships, including the dreadnoughts Yamato and Musashi, plus a fleet of heavily armored cruisers and destroyers. The sky fills with multihued bursts of anti-aircraft fire. The flak, a Helldiver pilot would write in his action report, “was so thick you could get out and walk on it.” Half a dozen Intrepid aircraft are blown from the sky, but they sink the Musashi. A few months later, off Okinawa, they again meet her sister ship, the mighty Yamato. In a two-hour tableau of hellfire and towering explosions, Intrepid’s warplanes help send the super-battleship and 3,000 Japanese crewmen to the bottom of the sea. We’re next to nineteen-year-old Alonzo Swann in Gun Tub 10 aboard Intrepid as he peers over the breech of a 20-mm anti-aircraft gun. He’s heard of kamikazes, but until today he’s never seen one. Swann and his fellow gunners are among the few African Americans assigned to combat duty in the U.S. Navy of 1944. Blazing away at the diving Japanese Zero, Swann realizes with a dreadful certainty where it will strike: directly into Gun Tub 10. The authors follow Intrepid’s journey to Vietnam. “MiG-21 high!” crackles the voice of Lt. Tony Nargi in his F-8 Crusader. It is 1968, and Intrepid is again at war. Launching from Yankee Station in the Tonkin Gulf, Nargi and his wingman have intercepted a flight of Russian-built supersonic fighters. Minutes later, after a swirling dogfight over North Vietnam, Nargi—and Intrepid—have added another downed enemy airplane to their credit. Intrepid: The Epic Story of America’s Most Legendary Warship brings a renowned ship to life in a stirring tribute complete with the personal recollections of those who served aboard her, dramatic photographs, time lines, maps, and vivid descriptions of Intrepid’s deadly conflicts. More than a numbers-and-dates narrative, Intrepid is the story of people—those who sailed in her, fought to keep her alive, perished in her defense—and powerfully captures the human element in this saga of American heroism. |

the warplanes: America the Great Edward Hawkins Sisson, 2014-06-22 America the Great is the result of five years' research and writing that began in late 2009 in response to the contemporary American tea party movement and criticisms that the movement's participants did not know the history and theory of the original 1773 Boston Tea Party from which the modern movement takes its name. The extensive library of original books, newspapers, magazines, etc., now available (primarily via google books) to anyone over the Internet, means that researchers have available to them the university libraries of the world. The availability of accurate original documents made it possible to expand the original scope of research into other historical events, and into other countries (primarily Great Britain), and enabled the work to develop into a more general examination of theories of human dignity, and of the differing conception of government that arises depending on the conception of human dignity that is characteristic of the people that is creating that government. |

Over the past eighteen years, monumental literature has been published about 9/11, from Lawrence Wright’s The Looming Tower to The 9/11 Commission Report. But one perspective has been missing up to this point—a 360-degree account of the day told through firsthand. Now, in The Only Plane in the Sky, Garrett Graff tells the story of the day as it was lived—in the words of those who lived it. Drawing on never-before-published transcripts, declassified documents, original interviews, and oral histories from nearly five hundred government officials, first responders, witnesses, survivors, friends, and family members, he paints the most vivid and human portrait of the September 11 attacks yet. Beginning in the predawn hours of airports in the Northeast, we meet the ticket agents who unknowingly usher terrorists onto their flights, and the flight attendants inside the hijacked planes. In New York, first responders confront a scene of unimaginable horror at the Twin Towers. From a secret bunker under the White House, officials watch for incoming planes on radar. Aboard unarmed fighter jets in the air, pilots make a pact to fly into a hijacked airliner if necessary to bring it down. In the skies above Pennsylvania, civilians aboard United 93 make the ultimate sacrifice in their place. Then, as the day moves forward and flights are grounded nationwide, Air Force One circles the country alone, its passengers isolated and afraid. More than simply a collection of eyewitness testimonies, The Only Plane in the Sky is the historic narrative of how ordinary people grappled with extraordinary events in real time: the father and son caught on different ends of the impact zone; the firefighter searching for his wife who works at the World Trade Center; the operator of in-flight telephone calls who promises to share a passenger’s last words with his family; the beloved FDNY chaplain who bravely performs last rites for the dying, losing his own life when the Towers collapse; and the generals at the Pentagon who break down and weep when they are barred from trying to rescue their colleagues. At once a powerful tribute to the courage of everyday Americans and an essential addition to the literature of 9/11, The Only Plane in the Sky weaves together the unforgettable personal experiences of the men and women who found themselves caught at the center of an unprecedented human drama. The result is a unique, profound, and searing exploration of humanity on a day that changed the course of history, and all of our lives. |
the warplanes: Angels in the Sky: How a Band of Volunteer Airmen Saved the New State of Israel Robert Gandt, 2017-10-03 “Reads like a World War II thriller, only better because every word is true.… One of the great untold stories of history. Robert Gandt has brought it vividly, unforgettably to life.” —Steven Pressfield, best-selling author of Gates of Fire In 1948, when the newly founded nation of Israel came under siege from a coalition of Arab states, a band of volunteer airmen from the United States, Canada, Britain, France, and South Africa arrived to help. They were a small group, fewer than 150. Many were World War II veterans; most of them knowingly violated their nations’ embargoes on the shipment of arms and aircraft to Israel. The airmen risked everything—their careers, citizenship, and lives—to fight for Israel. The saga of the volunteer airmen in Israel’s war of independence stands as one of the most stirring—and little-known—war stories of the past century. |

the warplanes: The Twilight Warriors Robert Gandt, 2011-11-08 Winner of the 2011 Samuel Eliot Morison Award for Naval Literature, The Twilight Warriors is the engrossing, page-turning saga of a tightly knit band of naval aviators who are thrust into the final—and most brutal—battle of the Pacific war during World War II: Okinawa. April 1945. The end of World War II finally appears to be nearing. The Third Reich is collapsing in Europe, and the Americans are overpowering the once-mighty Japanese Empire in the Pacific. For a group of young pilots trained in the twilight of the war, their greatest worry is that it will end before they have a chance to face the enemy. They call themselves Tail End Charlies: They fly at the tail end of formations, stand at the tail end of chow lines, and now they are catching the tail end of the war. What they don’t know is that they will be key players in the bloodiest and most difficult of naval battles—not only of World War II but in all of American history. The Twilight Warriors relives the drama of the world’s last great naval campaign. From the cockpit of a Corsair fighter we gaze down at the Japanese task force racing to destroy the American amphibious force at Okinawa. Through the eyes of the men on the destroyers assigned to picket ship duty, we experience the terror as wave after wave of kamikazes crash into their ships. Standing on the deck of the legendary superbattleship Yamato, we watch Japan’s last hope for victory die in a tableau of gunfire and explosions. The fate of the Americans at Okinawa, including a twenty-two-year-old former art student, an intrepid fighter pilot whose life abruptly changes when his Corsair goes down off the enemy shore, and a young Texan lieutenant who volunteers for the most dangerous flying job in the fleet—intercepting kamikazes at night over the blackened Pacific—is intertwined with the lives of the “young gods”: the honor-bound kamikaes forces who swarm like killer bees toward the U.S. ships. The ferocity of the Okinawa fighting stuns the world. Before it ends, the long battle will cost more American lives, ships, and aircraft than any naval engagement in U.S. history. More than simply the account of a historic battle, The Twilight Warriors brings to life the human side of an epic conflict. It is the story of young Americans at war in the air and on the sea—and of their enigmatic, fanatically courageous enemy. |
the warplanes: The Terrorist Image Charlie Winter, 2022-08-15 The summer of 2014--when the Islamic State seized Mosul, Iraq's second city; captured vast swathes of eastern Syria; and declared itself a latter-day Caliphate--marked a turning point in the history of photography, one that pushed its already contested relationship with reality to its very limits. Uniquely obsessed with narrative, image management and branding, the Islamic State used cameras as weapons in its formative years as a Caliphate. The tens of thousands of propaganda photographs captured during this time were used to denote policy, to navigate through defeat and, perhaps most importantly, to construct an impossible reality: a totalizing image-world of Salafi-Jihadist symbols and myths. Based on a deep examination of the 20,000 photographs Charlie Winter collected from the Islamic State's covert networks online in 2017, this book explores the process by which the Caliphate shook the foundations of modern war photography. Focusing on the period in which it was at its strongest, Winter identifies the implicit value systems that underpinned the Caliphate's ideological appeal, and evaluates its uniquely malign contribution to the history of the photographic image. The Terrorist Image travels to the heart of what made the Islamic State tick during its prime, providing unique insights into its global appeal and mobilization successes. |
the warplanes: The Water Devil Aish Sindhu, 2014-04-03 An A. F. -320 model aircraft of America was crossing the Atlantic Ocean 18000 feet above the sea level, carrying 156 passengers. The aircraft was still flying across the Atlantic Ocean. Suddenly, a sort of peculiar light rays touched the aircraft. The plane shook horribly. it went out the pilot's control and darted towards an unknown destination. The horror-stricken passengers screamed loudly. The pilot managed to contact the American Airlines Office and inform them about the strange occurrences. The news of the plane going out of control caused a general panic among the officials in the terminal. Suddenly, the line of communication between the terminal and the aircraft cut off. Nixon screamed when he beheld that incredible sight. My God, What is it? the other passengers followed his gaze and saw the gigantic hear and long neck of a monstrous creature that was approaching the plane. They were horrified to death. There were plenty of horns The plane stood still in the air as if it was feathered to an unseen nail. The roof of the plane melted in the powerful rays which originated from the horns of the monster. The passengers screamed, seeing the cave sized mouth of the devilish creature aiming at them. The next moment, the monster caught some of the passengers in its mouth and swallowed them. One of the passengers gathered his guts and started firing at it. The effect was totally unanticipated. All the bullets from the revolver got caught in the fatal light rays and vanished into thin air. A middle aged man jumped out of the plane in fright. Suddenly the monster extended one of its horns and caught him. It roared horrible. The aircraft, its passengers and the sky itself shook, hearing the blood chilling roar of the monster. The plane moved in a circle as if it was caught in a whirlpool. The monster caught the panic stricken middle aged man in its mouth. The other passengers screamed in horror, hearing his bones being crunched and ground. Will any of them escape from that devilish monster? Who will save them? Will anyone succeed in killing the scary creature? |
