These challenges were apparent to most scholars, theologians, and ministers as they continued to struggle with issues of what it meant to be a pastor, pastoral counselor, or perform pastoral care. At the heart of the discussion was Thomas C. Oden. Oden was a scholar and theologian from the Methodist tradition who not only understood the crisis at hand but also had lived the crisis in his own personal and theological journey. Oden’s contention was clear: pastoral identity and vocation suffers because it lacks Christ as the unifying center. Further, it lacks Christ as the unifying center because theology in general had left classical Christian orthodoxy behind in favor of accommodating modernity’s core tenets and methodology. Oden’s life work would be toward re-centering theology—particularly pastoral theology—around the person of Christ as the vital center of Christian faith by recovering the classical Christian tradition. While Oden’s work has been analyzed, a specific analysis of what he was attempting to achieve in recovering pastoral theology is needed. Specifically, on the matter of how he was seeking to “center” pastoral theology; thus, this dissertation will demonstrate that in his attempt to provide a vital center, Oden articulated a Christological vision, focusing on the Incarnation (in Christ) and the model of Shepherd (from Christ) for pastoral ministry and identity.
