Mathematical problems come in many flavours, from simple puzzles to major open problems. The problems stimulate, the stories of their successful solutions inspire, and their applications are wide. The literature abounds with books dedicated to mathematical problems — collections of problems, hints on how to solve them, and even histories of the paths to the solutions of some famous ones. This dissertation investigates efficient simulation algorithms based on importance sampling for computing rare-event probabilities for different models, and establishes their efficiency via asymptotic analysis. The first part discusses asymptotic behavior of affine models. Stochastic stability of affine jump diffusions are carefully studied. In particular, positive recurrence, ergodicity, and exponential ergodicity are established for such processes under various conditions via a Foster-Lyapunov type approach. The stationary distribution is characterized in terms of its characteristic function. Furthermore, the large deviations behavior of affine point processes are explicitly computed, based on which a logarithmically efficient importance sampling algorithm is proposed for computing rare-event probabilities for affine point processes. The second part is devoted to a much more general setting, i.e. general state space Markov processes. The current state-of-the-art algorithm for computing rare-event probabilities in this context heavily relies on the solution of a certain eigenvalue problem, which is often unavailable in closed form unless certain special structure is present (e.g. affine structure for affine models). To circumvent this difficulty, assuming the existence of a regenerative structure, we propose a bootstrap-based algorithm that conducts the importance sampling on the regenerative cycle-path space instead of the original one-step transition kernel. The efficiency of this algorithm is also discussed. |

When we were collecting the material, we felt that one special pleasure of the field lay in its evocation of an earlier age: many of our 'probabilistic forefathers' were dexterous solvers of discrete problems. We hope that this pleasure will be transmitted to the readers. The first problem-book of a similar kind as ours is perhaps Mosteller's well-known Fifty Challenging Problems in Probability (1965). Possibly, our book is the second. The book contains 125 problems and snapshots from the world of prob ability. A 'problem' generally leads to a question with a definite answer. A 'snapshot' is either a picture or a bird's-eye view of some probabilistic field. The selection is, of course, highly subjective, and we have not even tried to cover all parts of the subject systematically. Limit theorems appear only seldom, for otherwise the book would have become unduly large. We want to state emphatically that we have not written a textbook in probability, but rather a book for browsing through when occupying an easy-chair.
