the rajah's rice: Power and Prowess JH Walker, 2020-09-02 A significant reinterpretation of Sarawak history, Power and Prowess explores the network of power, economic and ritual relationships that developed on the northwest coast of Borneo in the mid-nineteenth century, from which a coalition led by James Brooke established the state of Sarawak. Where many authors placed Brooke in the context of nineteenth century British imperialism, this study perceives him in the context of Bornean cultures and political economies. Brooke emerges from the historical record as a 'man of prowess', with the author identifying important ritual sources of Brooke's power among Malays, Bidayuh and Ibans, sources which derived from and expressed indigenous cultural traditions about fertility, health and status. Drawing on conceptual frameworks from political science, as well as recent southeast Asian historiography, Power and Prowess offers a detailed political history of the period and new interpretations of Brooke's career. This study also retrieves from the historical sources previously concealed narratives which reflect the interests, priorities and activities of Sarawak people themselves. J.H. WALKER lectures in political science at the University of New South Wales at the Australian Defence Force Academy.

the rajah's rice: The Malay Archipelago (Vol. 1&2) Alfred Russel Wallace, 2023-12-15 Alfred Russel Wallace's 'The Malay Archipelago' is a two-volume travelogue that provides a detailed account of his explorations in the Southeast Asian region. Written in a captivating narrative style, Wallace describes the flora, fauna, and indigenous peoples of the Malay Archipelago, offering valuable insights into the biodiversity of the region. Wallace's inclusion of his theory of evolution and biogeography adds an extra layer of depth to the text, positioning it within the context of the scientific debates of the time. Alfred Russel Wallace, a renowned naturalist and contemporary of Charles Darwin, was inspired to write 'The Malay Archipelago' based on his extensive travels in the region. As a pioneer in the field of evolutionary biology, Wallace's work laid the groundwork for modern ecological studies and conservation efforts. I highly recommend 'The Malay Archipelago' to readers interested in travel literature, natural history, and evolutionary biology. Wallace's engaging prose and profound observations make this work a must-read for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the rich biodiversity of the Southeast Asian region.

the rajah's rice: The Malay Archipelago Alfred Russel Wallace, 2014-11-27 Of all the extraordinary Victorian travelogues, The Malay Archipelago has a fair claim to be the greatest - both as a beautiful, alarming, vivid and gripping account of some eight years' travel across the entire Malay world - from Singapore to the western edges of New Guinea - and as the record of a great mind. As Wallace, often under conditions of terrible hardship and sickness, battles through jungles, lives with headhunters, and collects beetles, butterflies and birds-of-paradise, he makes discoveries about the workings of biology that have shaped our view of the world ever since.
the rajah's rice: The Malay Archipelago: The Land of the Orang-utan and the Bird of Paradise; A Narrative of Travel with Studies of Man and Nature (Complete) Alfred Russel Wallace, 2020-09-28 From a look at a globe or a map of the Eastern hemisphere, we shall perceive between Asia and Australia a number of large and small islands forming a connected group distinct from those great masses of land, and having little connection with either of them. Situated upon the Equator, and bathed by the tepid water of the great tropical oceans, this region enjoys a climate more uniformly hot and moist than almost any other part of the globe, and teems with natural productions which are elsewhere unknown. The richest of fruits and the most precious of spices are Indigenous here. It produces the giant flowers of the Rafflesia, the great green-winged Ornithoptera (princes among the butterfly tribes), the man-like Orangutan, and the gorgeous Birds of Paradise. It is inhabited by a peculiar and interesting race of mankind—the Malay, found nowhere beyond the limits of this insular tract, which has hence been named the Malay Archipelago. To the ordinary Englishman this is perhaps the least known part of the globe. Our possessions in it are few and scanty; scarcely any of our travellers go to explore it; and in many collections of maps it is almost ignored, being divided between Asia and the Pacific Islands. It thus happens that few persons realize that, as a whole, it is comparable with the primary divisions of the globe, and that some of its separate islands are larger than France or the Austrian Empire. The traveller, however, soon acquires different ideas. He sails for days or even weeks along the shores of one of these great islands, often so great that its inhabitants believe it to be a vast continent. He finds that voyages among these islands are commonly reckoned by weeks and months, and that their several inhabitants are often as little known to each other as are the native races of the northern to those of the southern continent of America. He soon comes to look upon this region as one apart from the rest of the world, with its own races of men and its own aspects of nature; with its own ideas, feelings, customs, and modes of speech, and with a climate, vegetation, and animated life altogether peculiar to itself. From many points of view these islands form one compact geographical whole, and as such they have always been treated by travellers and men of science; but, a more careful and detailed study of them under various aspects reveals the unexpected fact that they are divisible into two portions nearly equal in extent which differ widely in their natural products, and really form two parts of the primary divisions of the earth. I have been able to prove this in considerable detail by my observations on the natural history of the various parts of the Archipelago; and, as in the description of my travels and residence in the several islands I shall have to refer continually to this view, and adduce facts in support of it, I have thought it advisable to commence with a general sketch of the main features of the Malayan region as will render the facts hereafter brought forward more interesting, and their bearing upon the general question more easily understood. I proceed, therefore, to sketch the limits and extent of the Archipelago, and to point out the more striking features of its geology, physical geography, vegetation, and animal life.
the rajah's rice: The Rajah of Dah George Manville Fenn, 2023-08-22 In The Rajah of Dah, George Manville Fenn masterfully intertwines adventure and exploration within the rich tapestry of colonial India. This novel, steeped in the era's literary style, reflects the fascination and exoticism of the British Empire's encounters with the East. Fenn'Äôs descriptive prose creates a vivid landscape that transports the reader to the vibrant realm of the Rajah, where cultural clash, intrigue, and moral questions abound. The narrative's pace is punctuated by moments of thrilling action and thoughtful reflection, allowing readers to engage deeply with the characters and their dilemmas. George Manville Fenn, a prolific Victorian author, had extensive experience as a journalist and traveler, which undoubtedly informed his depiction of India'Äôs diverse landscapes and cultures. Born in 1831, Fenn's literary career was characterized by a keen interest in adventure narratives, often encapsulating themes of bravery and morality. His experiences in the colonies provided a backdrop to his writing, allowing him to engage authentically with the geopolitical currents of his time. This unique perspective enables readers to discern subtle critiques of colonialism imbued within the story. The Rajah of Dah is highly recommended for readers seeking a compelling fusion of adventure and cultural narrative. This novel not only serves as an engrossing tale of exploration and bravery but also invites reflection on the complexities of imperial relationships and identities. Fenn's ability to depict the richness of his characters and settings will appeal to anyone interested in the nuances of colonial literature.
