tillie knock knock cat: Tillie's Place Gina Beth Clark, 2010-06-08 TILLIE'S PLACE The railroads would never have been built if the workers had not been fed. This was wild country and west of Omaha, Nebraska, the men were forced to live off the land. Many times going with out a meal if the cook did not find any game that day. The railroads soon learned that it would also be necessary for them to feed their passengers. That was when the Northern Pacific and other railroads began to look for places along their routes to place restaurants. One of those places was in a little town at the end of the line west of Omaha. It happened when a pretty, petite woman became stranded in Longhorn, and had no where to go ,that Frank, the fireman on the Northern Pacific railroad, gave his boss the information that he knew of someone who needed to work. That is how Tillie found herself the proprietess of an establishment that not only was to feed the passengers going through to California, but she was to help Frank in solving the many mysterious deaths that occurred along the rail line. Her food was so good ,that it was well remembered as Tillie's Place and lived in the hearts of many men long after diners were finally added to the passenger trains. |
tillie knock knock cat: Jesse's Hideout Kallypso Masters, 2017-03-27 Tillie Hamilton is the latest person to use her 180-year-old house in rural Kentucky as a hideout—taking her cue from the infamous outlaw Jesse James who frequented the place. The house she converted into a bed and breakfast is the only sanctuary she’s known, ever since the old woman she inherited it from rescued her from neglect as a small child. However, sparks fly when her benefactor’s handsome grandson, Greg Buchanan, accuses Tillie of exploiting his grandmother’s memory for her own ends by claiming Gram haunts the inn. While reading his grandmother’s private journals, Greg learned Jesse James returned to this house in the 1930s, half a century after historians believed he’d been shot dead. Vowing to debunk the charlatan’s claims of ghosts and to prove his grandmother correct, but quickly discovers the charming Tillie is not at all what he expected. Embarrassed to admit he’s another of the conspiracy theorists she scoffs at, he hides his secondary reason for showing up at her B&B. Yet his attraction to Tillie keeps him torn between setting history right and forging a new history of his own in Tillie’s arms. Tensions mount, leaving his grandmother’s spirit to think her dying wish—something she’s wanted since Tillie and Greg were children—may never come true. Can Gram and Jesse make the two lonely overachievers see they belong in each other’s arms before time runs out for them to seize this opportunity? |

tillie knock knock cat: Alice in Wonderland Lewis Carroll, 2024-09-25 Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is an 1865 English children's novel by Lewis Carroll, a mathematics don at the University of Oxford. It details the story of a girl named Alice who falls through a rabbit hole into a fantasy world of anthropomorphic creatures. It is seen as an example of the literary nonsense genre. The artist John Tenniel provided 42 wood-engraved illustrations for the book.It received positive reviews upon release and is now one of the best-known works of Victorian literature; its narrative, structure, characters and imagery have had a widespread influence on popular culture and literature, especially in the fantasy genre. It is credited as helping end an era of didacticism in children's literature, inaugurating an era in which writing for children aimed to delight or entertain. The tale plays with logic, giving the story lasting popularity with adults as well as with children. The titular character Alice shares her name with Alice Liddell, a girl Carroll knewscholars disagree about the extent to which the character was based upon her. |

tillie knock knock cat: Ideal Life vs. Real Life Tillie Lane, 2020-12-17 Do you ever feel like you’re missing out on your ideal life? You know, the perfect life we all envision for ourselves? Let’s face it: life is not for sissies. It seems we are always striving for the perfect, ideal life, but missing the mark (sometimes by a mile). I contend that our lives are overcomplicated by our own expectations. Relax! Take the wins and forget about the times things didn’t go perfectly. Look for the humor in those times when things didn’t quite make an “A” rating. I was never an “A” student anyway; how am I gonna start now? We don’t all have the time or desire to grow organic orange trees, freshly squeeze the juice in non-plastic bottles, and make granola bars from scratch from nuts you foraged in the woods, and wheat grown in your backyard to take for soccer snacks. Grab that forty pack of water bottles, hack up those store-bought oranges, grab boxes of granola bars (one without nuts of course), and hand them out proudly. If little Johnny’s mom snubs you because little Johnny can’t eat or drink anything that contains gluten, sugar, artificial—anything and certainly not oranges that come in a bag from Walmart as anything that has touched plastic might irritate his precious skin—then let Johnny’s mom bring the snacks for the rest of the season. You’re off the hook and the problem is no longer on your plate. Your “failure” to provide the correct snacks is actually a win for you. You deserve a sticker! I have complied some short stories from my own life that seemed like epic failures, and sometimes were, and yet the earth still turned. Looking back, I can laugh at all the bumps in road, failed attempts at perfection, and botched or forgotten plans. I know you will be able to relate in one story or another, so feel free to laugh at my mistakes. Really, it won’t hurt my feelings at all. Laugh it up! Oh, and one last thing, tell that unattainable ideal life to take a flying leap, and enjoy your real life. |

tillie knock knock cat: The View from Infinity CHRIS J. BERRY., 2015-04-28 After welcoming the congregation, the priest continued to announce the opening hymn, making no mention of why he had replaced Father Carmichael for the service. It raised the curiosity in Connie, especially as the rest of the congregation seemed relaxed and familiar with the priest addressing them. As the service continued, Connie found herself looking around the church to see if Father Carmichael had arrived. Peering through two pillars adjacent to their pew, her gaze fell upon a commemorative plaque set in the wall beyond. In bold script cut into the stone, Connie focused on the name of the churchs founder. She stared, stunned at the words In memory of Father Carmichael, followed by the dates of his life span several centuries earlier. |

tillie knock knock cat: Nightbitch Rachel Yoder, 2021-07-20 SOON TO BE A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE STARRING AMY ADAMS • In this blazingly smart and voracious debut novel, an artist turned stay-at-home mom becomes convinced she's turning into a dog. • A must-read for anyone who can’t get enough of the ever-blurring line between the psychological and supernatural that Yellowjackets exemplifies. —Vulture One day, the mother was a mother, but then one night, she was quite suddenly something else... An ambitious mother puts her art career on hold to stay at home with her newborn son, but the experience does not match her imagination. Two years later, she steps into the bathroom for a break from her toddler's demands, only to discover a dense patch of hair on the back of her neck. In the mirror, her canines suddenly look sharper than she remembers. Her husband, who travels for work five days a week, casually dismisses her fears from faraway hotel rooms. As the mother's symptoms intensify, and her temptation to give in to her new dog impulses peak, she struggles to keep her alter-canine-identity secret. Seeking a cure at the library, she discovers the mysterious academic tome which becomes her bible, A Field Guide to Magical Women: A Mythical Ethnography, and meets a group of mommies involved in a multilevel-marketing scheme who may also be more than what they seem. An outrageously original novel of ideas about art, power, and womanhood wrapped in a satirical fairy tale, Nightbitch will make you want to howl in laughter and recognition. And you should. You should howl as much as you want. |

tillie knock knock cat: The Song of the Lark Willa Cather, 1915 A novelist and short-story writer, Willa Cather is today widely regarded as one of the foremost American authors of the twentieth century. Particularly renowned for the memorable women she created for such works as My Antonia and O Pioneers!, she pens the portrait of another formidable character in The Song of the Lark. This, her third novel, traces the struggle of the woman as artist in an era when a woman's role was far more rigidly defined than it is today. The prototype for the main character as a child and adolescent was Cather herself, while a leading Wagnerian soprano at the Metropolitan Opera (Olive Fremstad) became the model for Thea Kronborg, the singer who defies the limitations placed on women of her time and social station to become an international opera star. A coming-of-age-novel, important for the issues of gender and class that it explores, The Song of the Lark is one of Cather's most popular and lyrical works. Book jacket. |

tillie knock knock cat: The Luck Factor (Harriman Classics) Max Gunther, 2020-08-11 Max Gunther's classic text with a new foreword by Gautam Baid. Luck. We can't see it, or touch it, but we can feel it. We all know it when we experience it. But does it go deeper than this? And if it goes deeper, does it do so in any way which we can harness to our own and others' advantage? Taking us on a fascinating tour through the more popular theories and histories of luck - from pseudoscience to paganism, mathematicians to magicians - Max Gunther arrives at a careful set of scientific conclusions as to the true nature of luck, and the possibility of managing it. Drawing out the logical truths hidden in some examples of outrageous fortune (and some of the seemingly absurd theories of its origins), he presents readers with the concise formulae that make up what he calls the 'Luck Factor' - the five traits that lucky people have in common - and shows how anyone can improve their luck. |

In this all-access memoir of the psychedelic era, Sam Cutler recounts his life as tour manager for the Rolling Stones and the Grateful Dead—whom he calls the yin and yang of bands. After working with the Rolling Stones at their historic Hyde Park concert in 1969, Sam managed their American tour later that year, when he famously dubbed them “The Greatest Rock Band in the World.” And he was caught in the middle as their triumph took a tragic turn during a free concert at the Altamont Speedway in California, where a man in the crowd was killed by the Hell’s Angels. After that, Sam took up with the fun-loving Grateful Dead, managing their tours and finances, and taking part in their endless hijinks on the road. With intimate portraits of other stars of the time—including Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, the Band, the Allman Brothers, Pink Floyd, and Eric Clapton—this memoir is a treasure trove of insights and anecdotes that bring some of rock’s greatest legends to life. |

tillie knock knock cat: The Mountain of the Women Liam Clancy, 2002-02-19 In an irresistible tale of a life lived fully, if not always wisely, Liam Clancy, of the legendary Irish group the Clancy Brothers, describes his eventful journey from a small town in Ireland in the 1930s into the heart of the New York music scene in the 1950s and ’60s. Following in the grand tradition of such Irish memoirs as Angela’s Ashes and Are You Somebody?, Liam Clancy relates his life’s story in a raucously funny and star-studded account of moving from provincial Ireland to the bars and clubs of New York City, to the cusp of fame as a member of Tommy Makem and the Clancy Brothers. Born in 1935, the eleventh out of as many children, young Liam was a naive and innocent lad of the Old Country. His memories of childhood include bounding over hills, streams, and the occasional mountain, getting lost, and eventually found, and making mischief in the way of a typical Irish boy. As an aimless nineteen-year-old, Clancy met a strange and wonderfully energetic lover of music, Ms. Diane Guggenheim, an American heiress. She and a colleague from America had set out to record regional Irish folk music, and their undertaking led them to Carrick-on-Suir in the shadow of Slievenamon, The Mountain of the Women, where Mammie Clancy had been known to carry a tune or two in her kitchen. Guggenheim fell for young Liam and swept him along on her travels through the British Isles, the American Appalachians, and finally Greenwich Village, the undisputed Mecca for aspiring artists of every ilk in the late 1950s. Clancy was in New York to become an actor. But on the side, he played and sang with his brothers, Paddy and Tom, and fellow countryman Tommy Makem, in pubs like the legendary White Horse Tavern. In the heady atmosphere of the Village, Clancy’s life was a party filled with music, sex, and McSorley’s. His friendships with then-unknown artists such as Bob Dylan, Maya Angelou, Robert Redford, Lenny Bruce, Pete Seeger and Barbra Streisand form the backdrop of the charming adventures of a small-town boy making it big in the biggest of cities. In music circles, the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem are known as the Beatles of Irish music. The band’s music continues to play on jukeboxes in pubs and bars, in living rooms of folk music fans, and in Irish American homes throughout the country. Liam Clancy’s lively memoir captures their wild adventures on the road to fame and fortune, and brings to life a man who never lets himself off the hook for his sins, and happily views his success as a blessing. |
