Modern sociological theory descends from the historical foundations of functionalist and conflict-centered accounts of social structure, as well as the micro-scale structural and pragmatist theories of social interaction. Contemporary sociological theory retains traces of these approaches. Presently, sociological theories lack a single overarching foundation, and there is little consensus about what such a framework should consist of. However, a number of broad paradigms cover much present sociological theorizing. In the humanistic parts of the discipline, these paradigms are referred to as social theory and are often shared with the humanities. The discipline’s dominant scientifically-oriented areas generally focus on a different set of theoretical perspectives, which by contrast are generally referred to as a sociological theory. These include sociological field theory, new institutionalism, social networks, social identity, social and cultural capital, toolkit and cognitive theories of culture, and resource mobilization. Analytical sociology is an ongoing effort to systematize many of these middle-range theories. In order to value the importance of sociological perspective, it is significant to realize that sociology as a discipline arose within distinct historical, intellectual and social contexts. India has been facing a serious problemof the rapid rise of population since the last seven decades. The huge size of urbanpopulation population has reached nearly 400 million now, while until the nineteenthcentury no developed country had a population of more than 100 million. Only a few metropolises dominate the remainder of the country so excessivelythat they prevent other parts from developing, causing increasing regionalimbalance. The rapidly increasing population requires a commensurate increasein the number of jobs in urban areas, if this population is not to starve or bereduced to total dependence. The expansion in the industrial sector of the economyhas lagged far behind the population growth. This has resulted in increasingunemployment, slums, deterioration in urban living, crime, political tension, povertyand similar other problems. It appears that India is likely to confront still greaterurban problems in future. With the hasty rise of population the quality of life inbig cities has deteriorated quite significant. |

| themes and perspectives in indian sociology: Peacocks, Chameleons, Centaurs Wayne Brekhus, 2003-10 What does it mean to be a gay man living in the suburbs? Do you identify primarily as gay, or suburban, or some combination of the two? For that matter, how does anyone decide what his or her identity is? In this first-ever ethnography of American gay suburbanites, Wayne H. Brekhus demonstrates that who one is depends at least in part on where and when one is. For many urban gay men, being homosexual is key to their identity because they live, work, and socialize in almost exclusively gay circles. Brekhus calls such men lifestylers or peacocks. Chameleons or commuters, on the other hand, live and work in conventional suburban settings, but lead intense gay social and sexual lives outside the suburbs. Centaurs, meanwhile, or integrators, mix typical suburban jobs and homes with low-key gay social and sexual activities. In other words, lifestylers see homosexuality as something you are, commuters as something you do, and integrators as part of yourself. Ultimately, Brekhus shows that lifestyling, commuting, and integrating embody competing identity strategies that occur not only among gay men but across a broad range of social categories. What results, then, is an innovative work that will interest sociologists, psychologists, anthropologists, and students of gay culture. |
