the pilgrims progress: Answers to Prayer George Müller, 2020-12-17 In this compilation, the editor has endeavored to select those incidents and practical remarks from Mr. Müller's Narratives, that show in an unmistakeable way, both to believers and unbelievers the secret of believing in prayer, the manifest hand of a living God and His unfailing response, in His own time and way, to every petition which is according to His will. The careful perusal of these extracts will thus further the great object which Mr. Müller had in view, without the necessity of reading through the various details of his Narratives, details which Mr. Müller felt bound to give when writing periodically the account of God's dealings with him.
the pilgrims progress: The Odyssey of Love Paul Krause, 2021-07-08 Tolle Lege, take up and read! These words from St. Augustine perfectly describe the human condition. Reading is the universal pilgrimage of the soul. In reading we journey to find ourselves and to save ourselves. The ultimate journey is reading the Great Books. In the Great Books we find the struggle of the human soul, its aspirations, desires, and failures. Through reading, we find faces and souls familiar to us even if they lived a thousand years ago. The unread life is not worth living, and in reading we may well discover what life is truly about and prepare ourselves for the pilgrimage of life.

the pilgrims progress: Pilgrim's Progress (Bunyan) John Bunyan, 2019-11-22 The Pilgrims Progress is a famous story of man's progress through life in search of salvation and remains one of the most entertaining allegories of faith ever written. Set against realistic backdrops of town and country, the powerful drama of the pilgrim's trials and temptations follows him in his harrowing journey to the Celestial City. An enormously influential 17th-century classic, universally known for its simplicity, vigor, and beauty of language. Pilgrim's Progress is read with the greatest pleasure.- George Whitefield (1714-1770) I find this book so full of matter, that I can seldom go through more than a page or half a page at a time. - John Newton (1725-1807) Next to the Bible, the book that I value most is Pilgrim's Progress. I believe I have read it through at least a hundred times... Prick him anywhere, and you will find that his blood is bibline, the very essence of the Bible flows from him. - Charles H. Spurgeon (1834-1892) That tenderest and most theological of books is pulsating with life in every word. - J. Gresham Machen (1881-1937) Often disguised as something that would help him, evil accompanies Christian on his journey to the Celestial City. As you walk with him, you'll begin to identify today's many religious pitfalls. These are presented by men such as Pliable, who turns back at the Slough of Despond; and Ignorance, who believes he's a true follower of Christ when he's really only trusting in himself. Each character represented in this allegory is intentionally and profoundly accurate in its depiction of what we see all around us, and unfortunately, what we too often see in ourselves. But while Christian is injured and nearly killed, he eventually prevails to the end. So can you.

the pilgrims progress: The Postmodern Pilgrim's Progress Kyle Mann, Joel Berry, 2022-06-07 From the editor-in-chief and managing editor of the Babylon Bee! A millenial seeker travels through a twenty-first century take on The Pilgrims's Progress with allegorical versions of all our modern vices tempting him along the way—as well as a few timeless personified virtues that just might see him through. Biting satire and uncommon wisdom from the creators of the internet's most influential comedy site, and an author of national bestsellerThe Babylon Bee Guide to Wokeness! Ryan Fleming is a young agnostic reeling from his brother’s death. Though he is deeply angry with God, he makes good on a promise he made to his brother in the final moments of his life: to visit a church at least once. But shortly after his arrival, the slick megachurch’s shoddily installed video projector falls on his head—sending Ryan through a wormhole into another world. After a narrow escape from the City of Destruction, where the comfortably numb townspeople are oblivious to the fire and brimstone falling like bombs in their midst and destroying their homes, Ryan finds himself on a quest: To make it back to his own universe, he must partner with a woman named Faith to awaken a long-sleeping King—the World-Maker who can make all things new. Replete with characters ripped straight from the twenty-first century American church—including Radical, Mr. Satan, the Smiling Preacher, and others—this sometimes-humorous, always-insightful trek parallels Christian’s fictional journey in Pilgrim’s Progress. Prepare to laugh, cry, cringe, feel convicted, and ultimately be changed by the time the story ends. The Postmodern Pilgrim’s Progress is brought to you by Kyle Mann and Joel Berry, the two comedic minds behind The Babylon Bee—which, with 250,000 newsletter subscribers and more than fifteen million page views per month, is the most popular satirical news site on the planet.

the pilgrims progress: Pictures from Pilgrim's Progress Charles Haddon Spurgeon, 2019-03-18 C H Spurgeon loved Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress. He tells us in this book that he had read it more than 100 times. Drawn largely from short addresses given at the Metropolitan Tabernacle Prayer Meetings, these chapters comment on and apply the key incidents from Pilgrim’s Progress in a very practical way. Spurgeon urges his readers to share and learn from the experiences of Christian as he journeys to the Celestial City. Recommended reading for all readers, but young Christians will find it particularly helpful in ‘unlocking’ the meaning of the original allegory.

the pilgrims progress: The Portable Bunyan Isabel Hofmeyr, 2018-06-05 How does a book become an international bestseller? What happens to it as it is translated into different languages, contexts, and societies? How is it changed by the intellectual environments it encounters? What does the transnational circulation mean for its reception back home? Exploring the international life of a particularly long-lived and widely traveled book, Isabel Hofmeyr follows The Pilgrim's Progress as it circulates through multiple contexts--and into some 200 languages--focusing on Africa, where 80 of the translations occurred. This feat of literary history is based on intensive research that criss-crossed among London, Georgia, Kingston, Bedford (John Bunyan's hometown), and much of sub-Saharan Africa. Finely written and unusually wide-ranging, it accounts for how The Pilgrim's Progress traveled abroad with the Protestant mission movement, was adapted and reworked by the societies into which it traveled, and, finally, how its circulation throughout the empire affected Bunyan's standing back in England. The result is a new intellectual approach to Bunyan--one that weaves together British, African, and Caribbean history with literary and translation studies and debates over African Christianity and mission. Even more important, this book is a rare example of a truly worldly study of world literature--and of the critical importance of translation, both linguistic and cultural.

the pilgrims progress: The Pilgrims Progress (Illustarted) John Bunyan, 2022-02-20 John Bunyan was a man who felt, above all else, the need to preach the word of God. However during 17th century England it was illegal to preach outside the auspices of the Church of England. His failure to obey this law would land him in the Bedfordshire county jail twice, first for a period of twelve years, and then later for a period of six months. Bunyan could have avoided this harsh sentence if he had simply promised not to continue his preaching, however his faith would not allow him to do so. It was during this incarceration that he would begin composition of The Pilgrim's Progress, a work that has come to be regarded as one of the most important works of religious English literature. First published in 1678, The Pilgrim's Progress is a Christian allegory in the same vein of many such works of Bunyan's time. It concerns the travel of an everyman named Christian who travels from his home, The City of Destruction, to The Celestial City atop Mount Zion. The City of Destruction is a parallel for this world and The Celestial City for the next. In this characterization the journey of Christian can be seen as the quest of man to escape the burden of Earthly sin and find salvation for his soul in heaven. This edition contains both the first and second parts of The Pilgrim's Progress, includes an introduction by Charles S. Baldwin, and a biographical afterword.
