the monk and the riddle: Hard Facts, Dangerous Half-Truths, and Total Nonsense Jeffrey Pfeffer, Robert I. Sutton, 2006-02-14 The best organizations have the best talent. . . Financial incentives drive company performance. . . Firms must change or die. Popular axioms like these drive business decisions every day. Yet too much common management “wisdom” isn’t wise at all—but, instead, flawed knowledge based on “best practices” that are actually poor, incomplete, or outright obsolete. Worse, legions of managers use this dubious knowledge to make decisions that are hazardous to organizational health. Jeffrey Pfeffer and Robert I. Sutton show how companies can bolster performance and trump the competition through evidence-based management, an approach to decision-making and action that is driven by hard facts rather than half-truths or hype. This book guides managers in using this approach to dismantle six widely held—but ultimately flawed—management beliefs in core areas including leadership, strategy, change, talent, financial incentives, and work-life balance. The authors show managers how to find and apply the best practices for their companies, rather than blindly copy what seems to have worked elsewhere. This practical and candid book challenges leaders to commit to evidence-based management as a way of organizational life—and shows how to finally turn this common sense into common practice.

the monk and the riddle: Probable Impossibilities Alan Lightman, 2021-02-09 The acclaimed author of Einstein’s Dreams tackles big questions like the origin of the universe and the nature of consciousness ... in an entertaining and easily digestible way” (Wall Street Journal) with a collection of meditative essays on the possibilities—and impossibilities—of nothingness and infinity, and how our place in the cosmos falls somewhere in between. Can space be divided into smaller and smaller units, ad infinitum? Does space extend to larger and larger regions, on and on to infinity? Is consciousness reducible to the material brain and its neurons? What was the origin of life, and can biologists create life from scratch in the lab? Physicist and novelist Alan Lightman, whom The Washington Post has called “the poet laureate of science writers,” explores these questions and more—from the anatomy of a smile to the capriciousness of memory to the specialness of life in the universe to what came before the Big Bang. Probable Impossibilities is a deeply engaged consideration of what we know of the universe, of life and the mind, and of things vastly larger and smaller than ourselves.

the monk and the riddle: The Lean Startup Eric Ries, 2011-09-13 Most startups fail. But many of those failures are preventable. The Lean Startup is a new approach being adopted across the globe, changing the way companies are built and new products are launched. Eric Ries defines a startup as an organization dedicated to creating something new under conditions of extreme uncertainty. This is just as true for one person in a garage or a group of seasoned professionals in a Fortune 500 boardroom. What they have in common is a mission to penetrate that fog of uncertainty to discover a successful path to a sustainable business. The Lean Startup approach fosters companies that are both more capital efficient and that leverage human creativity more effectively. Inspired by lessons from lean manufacturing, it relies on “validated learning,” rapid scientific experimentation, as well as a number of counter-intuitive practices that shorten product development cycles, measure actual progress without resorting to vanity metrics, and learn what customers really want. It enables a company to shift directions with agility, altering plans inch by inch, minute by minute. Rather than wasting time creating elaborate business plans, The Lean Startup offers entrepreneurs—in companies of all sizes—a way to test their vision continuously, to adapt and adjust before it’s too late. Ries provides a scientific approach to creating and managing successful startups in a age when companies need to innovate more than ever.
the monk and the riddle: The Monk's Choice David McArthur, 2021-02-25 Long Ago, one monk entered a village filled with fear. Another monk entered a village where people were starving. When the first monk, who was once a great warrior, left his village, the fear had turned to celebration. When the second monk, who had been orphaned as a little girl, left her village, hunger was no more. Both monks knew a secret, the secret of the monk's choice. Both monks knew we each have a deep level of wisdom that holds answers to our challenges. That level of wisdom is as accessible to you today as it was to them in that ancient time. The monks learned the secret of the monk's choice by teachers of ancient wisdom. Our understanding of this powerful process comes from science. The scientists at the HeartMath Institute showed that accessing that profound wisdom was possible, easy and quick. It happens when we know how to make a specific choice, the monk's choice. This book also contains the stories of people who are making the monk's choice in today's world, revealing that it is as powerful today as it was long ago. The Monk's Choice contains stories, ancient and contemporary, that illustrate the life-changing skill of making the monk's choice. This choice activates a biophysical shift that enhances our brains and opens our hearts. The expanded intelligence it activates is different than that produced by our brains. It has been called heart intelligence, spiritual intelligence and wisdom. The scientists have described it as the major intelligence of the human system. You have answers to the questions before you. Here are the steps, used by the monks and used by people in today's world, to access the deepest wisdom of your heart.

the monk and the riddle: I F**king Love that Company Bayard Winthrop, Randy Komisar, 2015 Most retailers today are little more than real estate developers. The costs necessary to support vast infrastructures built on leases and global supply chains have become serious liabilities. Retail is changing and bricks and mortar retailers are having a hard time finding their niche in this social media world. Bayard Winthrop, the founder and CEO of American Giant. uses this forum to discuss how retail is changing, why the consumer now holds the power in the retail world, and how new retail brands are changing the face of the industry. Winthrop says that brands that cannot inspire love and loyalty with their customers will die, whereas customers who love their brands have a multitude of ways to share that love with the whole world. As Winthrop writes in the introduction, This new breed of brands operates according to a fresh set of rules and expectations. Size, scale, and speed don't define success for them. Efficiency, quality, company values⿿and the power of an Instagram plug⿿do. Today, when customers feel loyal to a brand, they let the world know about it--and don't hold back. Companies that are able to inspire that kind of love and loyalty will be the ones best positioned for growth.

the monk and the riddle: Creativity and Artificial Intelligence Francisco Câmara Pereira, 2008-08-27 Creativity and Artificial Intelligence: A Conceptual Blending Approach takes readers into a computationally plausible model of creativity. Inspired by a thorough analysis of work on creativity from the areas of philosophy, psychology, cognitive science, cognitive linguistics and artificial intelligence, the author deals with the various processes, principles and representations that lie underneath the act of creativity. Focusing on Arthur Koestler's Bisociations, which eventually lead to Turner and Fauconnier's conceptual blending framework, the book proposes a theoretical model that considers blends and their emergent structure as a fundamental cognitive mechanism. The author thus discusses the computational implementation of several aspects of conceptual blending theory, namely composition, completion, elaboration, frames and optimality constraints. Informal descriptions and examples are supplied to provide non-computer scientists as well as non-cognitive linguists with clear insights into these ideas. Several experiments are made, and their results are discussed, with particular emphasis on the validation of the creativity and conceptual blending aspects. Written by a researcher with a background in artificial intelligence, the book is the result of several years of exploration and discussion from different theoretical perspectives. As a result, the book echoes some of the criticism made on conceptual blending and creativity in artificial intelligence, and thus proposes improvements in both areas, with the aim of being a constructive contribution to these very intriguing, yet appealing, research orientations.
