the complete writings of florence scovel shinn: The Game of Life (and How to Play It) by Florence Scovel Shinn Richard Lode, Florence Scovel Shinn, 2017-03-08 Most people consider life a battle, but it is not a battle, it is a game. It is a game, however, which cannot be played successfully without the knowledge of spiritual law, and the Old and the New Testaments give the rules of the game with wonderful clearness. Jesus the Christ taught that it was a great game of Giving and Receiving. If we give hate, we will receive hate; if we give love, we will receive love; if we give criticism, we will receive criticism; if we lie we will be lied to; if we cheat we will be cheated. We are taught also, that the imaging faculty plays a leading part in the game of life. Keep thy heart (or imagination) with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of life. (Prov. 4:23.)

the complete writings of florence scovel shinn: The Collected Works Florence Scovel Shinn, 2021-09-14 Florence Scovel Shinn was an American artist and book illustrator by trade but she is probably best remembered for her inspirational works of self-empowerment. Shinn's writings are classic examples of the New Thought movement, a philosophical movement which developed near the end of the 19th century which asserted that the power of God is in all things and that by correctly focusing one's mind one can both heal oneself and attract success. Shinn began self publishing her works in 1925 with the introduction of The Game of Life and How to Play It, in which she argues that the application of certain laws of metaphysics holds the keys to both success and ruin. Shinn's philosophy can be summed up by the following statement from that work: The invisible forces are ever working for man who is always 'pulling the strings' himself, though he does not know it. Owing to the vibratory power of words, whatever man voices, he begins to attract. The Game of Life and How to Play It, Your Word Is Your Wand, The Secret Door to Success and The Power of the Spoken Word are collected together in this volume which is printed on a premium acid-free paper.

Sample Book Insights: #1 The game of life is a game of Giving and Receiving. To play it successfully, we must train the imaging faculty. A person with an imaging faculty trained to image only good brings into his life every righteous desire of his heart – health, wealth, love, friends, and perfect self-expression. #2 The law of substitution states that a right idea is substituted for a wrong one, and there is no loss or sacrifice involved. Jesus Christ said that the Kingdom of God was within man. The Kingdom is the realm of right ideas. #3 The object of the game of life is to see clearly your good and to obliterate all mental pictures of evil. This must be done by impressing the subconscious mind with a realization of good. #4 Every thought and word is recorded in detail. We must break all the old bad records in our subconscious minds and replace them with new and beautiful ones.
the complete writings of florence scovel shinn: The Artist's Complete Guide to Figure Drawing Anthony Ryder, 2014-03-02 Many of us want to learn “how to draw.” But as artist Anthony Ryder explains, it’s much more important to learn what to draw. In other words, to observe and draw what we actually see, rather than what we think we see. When it comes to drawing the human figure, this means letting go of learned ideas and expectation of what the figure should look like. It means carefully observing the interplay of form and light, shape and line, that combine to create the actual appearance of human form. In The Artist’s Complete Guide to Figure Drawing, amateur and experienced artists alike are guided toward this new way of seeing and drawing the figure with a three-step drawing method. The book’s progressive course starts with the block-in, an exercise in seeing and establishing the figure’s shape. It then build to the contour, a refined line drawing that represents the figure’s silhouette. The last step is tonal work on the inside of the contour, when light and shadow are shaped to create the illusion of form. Separate chapters explore topics critical to the method: gesture, which expresses a sense of living energy to the figure; light, which largely determines how we see the model; and form, which conveys the figure’s volume and mass. Examples, step-by-steps, and special “tips” offer helpful hints and practical guidance throughout. Lavishly illustrated with the author’s stunning artwork, The Artist’s Complete Guide to Figure Drawing combines solid instruction with thoughtful meditations on the art of drawing, to both instruct and inspire artists of all levels.

Everett was interested in the theatre and not only designed and painted for it but built a small theatre in the courtyard behind their studio home at 112 Waverly Place, near Washington Square. He organised the Waverly Players and wrote three plays in each of which Florence played the title role. Before World War 1 she was an illustrator of popular children's literature in magazines and books. In 1912, after fourteen years of marriage, Everett requested a divorce. Whether it's confusing an authority figure with a parent; avoiding conflict because of past squabbles with siblings; or suffering from imposter syndrome because of the way your family responded to success, when it comes to work we are all trapped in our own upbringings and the patterns of behaviour we learned while growing up. Many of us spend eighteen formative years or more living with family and building our personality; but most of us also spend fifty years - or 90,000 hours - in the workplace. With the pull of the familial so strong, we unconsciously re-enact our personal past in our professional present - even when it holds us back. Through intimate stories, fascinating insights and provocative questions that tackle the issues that cause us most problems - from imposter syndrome and fear of conflict to perfectionism and anxiety - business psychotherapist Naomi Shragai will transform how you think about yourself and your working life.
