Included are love poems, political diatribes, short stories, character portraits. Some are intimately connected with plays; others are intriguingly allusive, and all of them share Pinter's lean, taut, and sometimes jarringly original use of language. Katherine Burkman has said that like Shakespeare, Pinter is a poet, and in this single volume we see that Harold Pinter is not only, as Irving Wardle has written in the London Times, our best living playwright but one of the most accomplished writers in the English language today. |

the birthday party book harold pinter: Harold Pinter and the Twilight of Modernism Varun Begley, 2005 The Frankfurt School's discourse on modernism has seldom been linked to contemporary drama, though the questions of aesthetics and politics explored by T.W. Adorno and others seem especially germane to the plays of Harold Pinter, which span high and low cultural forms and move freely from hermetic modernism to political engagement. Examining plays from 1958 to 1996, Varun Begley'sHarold Pinter and the Twilight of Modernism argues that Pinter's work simultaneously embodies the modernist principle of negation and the more fluid aesthetics of the postmodern. Pinter is arguably one of the most popular and perplexing of modern dramatists writing in English. His plays prefigured, then chronicled, the crumbling divide between modernism and its historical 'others:' popular entertainment, politically committed art, and technological mass culture. Begley sheds new light on Pinter's work by applying the methods and problems of cultural studies discourse. Viewing his plays as a series of responses to fundamental aesthetic and political questions within modernism, Begley argues that, collectively, they narrate a prehistory of the postmodern. |

the birthday party book harold pinter: Harold Pinter’s Comedies of Menace. Fear and Control in "The Birthday Party" Lukas Szpeth, 2019-07-16 Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,5, University of Trier (Anglistik), course: Proseminar Harold Pinter, language: English, abstract: Converging comedy and fear, that is a strange art practiced in the comedies of menace. One of the most prominent authors who intermingles the two in his plays is Harold Pinter. But what is the role of menace and fear in a comic play? To examine this question closer the present term paper looks at the role of fear in one of Harold Pinter’s first plays, namely his first full length play The Birthday Party. As we will see none of the characters in the play is free from fear. Especially the main character Stanley, the permanent guest in Meg’s boarding house, is hounded by his emotions. To begin with I will discuss how Pinter came to choose such a devastating theme and work on it to figure out the fear in the play, along with the emotions and actions it affects. Hereby the menace that the outside world projects on the main character Stanley will be an important factor. |
