Arnold has re-narrated rock history to center Black women's vocality. Freedom Girls draws on a broad array of archival sources, including music magazines, fashion and entertainment magazines produced for young women, biographies and interviews, audience research reports, and others to inform analysis of musical recordings (including such songs as As Tears Go By, Son of a Preacher Man, and others) and performances on television programs such as Ready Steady Go!, Shindig, and other 1960s music shows. These performances reveal the historical and contemporary connections between voice, social mobility, and musical authority, and demonstrate how singers used voice to navigate the boundaries of race, class, and gender. |

The book contributes new insights into how early-modern stage conditions shaped the writing, production, and reception of Shakespeare's plays, but takes the further step of examining how original stage conditions re-emerge, not only in Globe replicas like the London Globe, but in unexpected and sometimes unconscious reconfigurations in adaptations and productions from around the world: film versions of Othello from Mexico to India that take dancing cues and anxieties about dance from the play and centralize dance; Korean adaptations for the madang (or yard) that reimagine Shakespeare's theatrical spaces and their relationships to audiences; Noh re-imaginings on film and onstage that foreground the theatrical; a teen film remake of Othello that raises questions about how blackness is figured today and on Shakespeare's stage, among others. For this purpose, selected examples from Gautam Malkani’s debut novel Londonstani (2006) and its Italian translation by Massimo Bocchiola (2007) are analysed and discussed, in terms of the solutions they offer for the study of linguistic variation as a translation issue, and in terms of the constraints involved in the translation of linguistic varieties. The contrastive analysis conducted on the novel and its Italian translation will serve to provide new insights into the several issues the translation of vernacular literature can raise. How can a translator linguistically recreate the hybrid identity of the characters as Londonstanis, and their performing of masculinity through ethnicity (by resorting to non-standard forms and linguistic repertoires other than the English language) in a new context (the Italian one), which only recently is experiencing the challenges of superdiversity?
