survey of the bible william hendriksen: Ephesians David Legg, 2020-12-05 Through these discussion Bible studies you will discover the structure of Ephesians, its theology and application. The 11 separate studies are designed for small groups to use, perhaps on a week-day evening. Most small group Bible study notes have far too much material in them and take hours to do; these don't. They require a time slot of an hour, or less, unless the group is large. All participants may have their own copy of these notes, which have spaces for writing in answers. This encourages regular attendance by group members. The leader uses the same study material, but will need to do some preparation beforehand. Both modern and older song suggestions are included. Some recommendations for extra reading by John Stott, Jim Packer, John Paton, William Hendriksen and Don Carson are given. Bible quotations are from 1984 New International Version.

survey of the bible william hendriksen: The Theology of the Book of Revelation Richard Bauckham, 1993-03-04 The Book of Revelation is a work of profound theology. But its literary form makes it impenetrable to many modern readers and open to all kinds of misinterpretations. Richard Bauckham explains how the book's imagery conveyed meaning in its original context and how the book's theology is inseparable from its literary structure and composition. Revelation is seen to offer not an esoteric and encoded forecast of historical events but rather a theocentric vision of the coming of God's universal kingdom, contextualised in the late first-century world dominated by Roman power and ideology. It calls on Christians to confront the political idolatries of the time and to participate in God's purpose of gathering all the nations into his kingdom. Once Revelation is properly grounded in its original context it is seen to transcend that context and speak to the contemporary church. This study concludes by highlighting Revelation's continuing relevance for today.

Poythress, 2012-10-31 Serious Bible readers all recognize that there are differences between accounts of the same events in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, and no responsible reader can simply sweep these differences under the rug. But can all of the accounts still be reconciled with a belief in biblical inerrancy? Responding to the questions surrounding the gospel narratives, New Testament scholar Vern Poythress contributes a worthy case for inerrancy in the gospels and helps readers understand basic principles for harmonization. He also tackles some of the most complicated exegetical problems, showing the way forward on passages that have perplexed many, such as the centurion's servant, the cursing of the fig tree, and more. All those interested in the authority of Scripture will find in this volume great encouragement and insight as Poythress has provided an arresting case to stem the tide of skepticism.

survey of the bible william hendriksen: End-Time Prophecy Børge Beck, 2023-03-09 Along with a correct understanding of the Bible as the God-breathed Word a correct interpretation is crucial. Basically, there are only two methods of interpretation, 1) the non-literal, allegorical or spiritualizing method, or 2) the literal, so-called grammatical-historical method. The latter, if employed consistently, gives the only correct understanding of what God originally intended to reveal about the salvation of mankind. The first part of this book demonstrates the advantage of the literal interpretation over the allegorical or spiritualizing method, which must be avoided at all costs - unless the text demands a shift from a literal to a figurative interpretation of a word or phrase - bearing in mind that figurative language still reveals literal truths. The second part of the book applies the teaching of the first part to Biblical prophecy, which must be interpreted in the exact same way as any other text in the Word of God. If employed consistently, the literal reading leads to Premillennialism (Christ returns to earth before and in order to establish the Millennial Kingdom), Pretribulationalism (the Church is raptured to heaven before the Tribulation), and Dispensationalism (God's dealings with man in seven consecutive dispensations or stewardships). Besides, 2 Thessalonians 2:3 is explained on the basis of the Greek text so as to be a conclusive defense of the pretribulational Rapture of the Church.
