Ostergren, Margaret Vento-Wilson, 2022-12-29 The third edition of the bestselling Speech-Language Pathology Assistants: A Resource Manual is an essential, practical, and easy-to-use resource for SLPAs and SLPA educators and their students. The text defines the roles of SLPAs and their supervisors—offering additional insight into the scope of practice of an SLPA per current American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) recommendations—and includes discussions, strategies, and examples of real-world issues, such as using augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and working with individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Also included within the chapters are important factors and modifications that can enhance the effectiveness of treatment activities. For example, using behavioral principles and incorporating play, literacy, and speech sound remediation into treatment or modifying the clinical interface to enhance group therapy dynamics for children and adults. Initial chapters are devoted to specific aspects of an SLPA’s development, such as chapters on ways SLPAs can enhance clinical service through understanding of goals, lesson plans, data collection, and note-writing. Likewise, chapters on professional practice offer insight into ethical problem-solving, presenting a professional image, developing mentoring relationships, working with culturally and linguistically diverse populations, and the use of self-reflection for self-improvement. These chapters are followed by key principles for SLPAs to incorporate in clinical services provided to specific populations and disorders. New to the Third Edition: * Updated ASHA documents throughout, including references to the new ASHA Speech-Language Pathology Assistant Scope of Practice (2022) and Speech-Language Pathology Code of Conduct (2020) * New co-author, Margaret Vento-Wilson, brings years of experience in both professional and academic settings and adds a fresh perspective throughout * Significant updates to Chapter 11 on using behavioral principles * New contributing authors bringing relevant updates in the field of speech-language pathology Speech-Language Pathology Assistants: A Resource Manual, Third Edition is a key resource for enhancing skills and highlighting professional practice issues, for clinical practicum training or future employment.   texas slp license: A Guide to Neuropsychological Testing for Health Care Professionals Eric R. Arzubi, MD, Elisa Mambrino, PhD, 2010-04-20 Neuropsychological assessments are now widely used to identify learning disabilities and shape educational interventions. However, many special education teachers, speech therapists, lawyers, pediatricians, psychiatrists, rehabilitation counselors, and a host of other helping professions know very little about how to interpret and act on information contained in neuropsychological assessments. The neuropsychological evaluations discussed in this text help shed light on a wide variety of psychiatric and medical conditions, including learning disabilities, severe and persistent mental illness, traumatic brain injury, neuropsychiatric disorders with accompanying chronic cognitive deficits, and acquired or congenital neurological conditions. This book emphasizes the breadth and depth of neuropsychological assessments and the many practical uses they have, such as treatment planning, diagnosis, interventions, and many more. The authors offer practical guidance on neuropsychological testing and assessment across the lifespan, from pediatric through geriatric patients. The book is designed specifically for those professionals with little to no training in neuropsychology that need to apply knowledge gleaned from neuropsychological assessments. Key topics discussed: Neuropsychological testing and psychoanalysis Using neuropsychological instruments in school settings: possibilities and limitations Using neuropsychological information in vocational rehabilitation planning Neuropsychology and speech/language therapy
texas slp license: Critical Perspectives on Social Justice in Speech-Language Pathology Horton, RaMonda, 2021-06-25 There is very little discussion of socially just approaches to speech-language pathology. Within other fields of clinically-oriented practice, social justice is a topic that has received a great deal of attention within the last few years. Pedagogy for addressing social justice has been developed in other disciplines. The field of communication disorders has failed to move forward and do the same. Discussion of social justice is important given the current sociopolitical climate and landscape that clients carry out in their day-to-day functioning. Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) have an opportunity to engage in practices that help address and alleviate some of the injustices that contribute to educational and health disparities experienced by communities of color. They may do this through the development and application of a socially just orientation of culturally competent practice that fosters changes beyond the individual level. Adapting such a framework makes it possible for SLPs to effectively advocate for and foster equity and inclusion for the individuals and broader communities impacted by SLP services. Critical Perspectives on Social Justice in Speech-Language Pathology addresses the socio-political contexts of how the field of speech-language pathology and service delivery can impact policy and debates related to social justice issues. It explores social position factors and the experiences of marginalized communities to explore how speech-language pathologists deliver services, train and prepare students, and carry out research in communities of color. It covers topic areas including disproportionality in special education, disability rights and ableism, achievement and opportunity gaps, health disparities, and LGBTQ+ rights with a focus on voice, communication, and gender-diverse populations. This book is essential for speech-language pathologists, administrators, practitioners, researchers, academicians, and students interested in how the SLP profession and discipline can contribute to or develop efforts to help address injustices faced by Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) communities.

texas slp license: Communication Sciences and Disorders Dale F. Williams, 2017-09-25 Few activities can match the complexity of human communication. Given its intricacy, it is understandable that the process will not always work properly. When it doesn't, the effects can be devastating, given how much of everyday life depends on communicating with one another. Despite its importance, however, much is still unclear about how we turn thoughts into language and then speech. Debates rage over various components of the communication system. Myths abound, most based on nothing more than speculation and misinformation. It all makes for a fascinating area of study and practice, particularly when considering the importance of the topic. This book provides readers with the basics of human communication without shying away from the controversies. Dale F. Williams, Ph.D. utilizes a panel of internationally recognized experts in all areas of the field to clearly explain normal communication as well as disorders of speech, language, hearing, and swallowing. Topics that overlap all disorders—diagnosis, treatment, research, ethics, work settings, and multicultural issues—are also covered in a reader-friendly style. In addition to the relevant information on human communication, the book also includes first-hand accounts of both people with disorders and those who work with them. Discussion questions are posed to help readers explore the gray areas and additional readings are described for those wishing to research specific topics. In these ways, readers are provided with information that truly helps them to understand communication sciences and disorders from a variety of perspectives. Communication Sciences and Disorders: An Introduction to the Professions is essential reading for anyone contemplating a career in speech-language pathology or audiology. In addition, the clear and entertaining writing style makes the field, in all its complexity, accessible to anyone with even a passing interest in the process of human communication.

texas slp license: Mismanaged Money in American Healthcare Lisa Famiglietti, Mark Scott, 2023-09-01 Warren Buffett famously invoked the metaphor of a tapeworm when describing what healthcare is to the American economy. The United States spends approximately 20% of its gross national product on healthcare, but it is unclear where the money goes or who is minding the store. This healthcare crisis is mostly about money--not lack of money, but rather misspending of money. From the perspective of a healthcare auditor and provider, this work describes the problems of American healthcare finance and proposes solutions. Extensive charts and graphs are used to trace where money goes in the American healthcare system, while other topics such as ethics in healthcare billing, un-auditable hospital costs and scams are discussed. There is evidence that clearly identifies where the money goes, and its destination may surprise the reader.

texas slp license: Overview of the Texas-Mexico Border , 1994 Effective transportation planning for the 1,230-mile (1,980-km) long Texas-Mexico border must take into account not only the unique characteristics of a binational environment, but also the possible impacts of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Accordingly, this study developed two complementary concepts useful in such binational transportation planning: sector analysis and super-crossing. Sector analysis--a concept based on major traffic diversion areas--provides aggregated revenue and/or demand estimates that address regional (as against site-specific) transportation planning issues. The super-crossing concept, developed to address post-NAFTA commercial traffic, is based on Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA) guidelines intended to foster multi- and intermodal facilities. Both concepts are fully described in this report. Additionally, border transportation planning and the implementation of sector analysis methodology require, in turn, assessments of traffic flow patterns and of post-NAFTA socioeconomic indicators. Thus, NAFTA socioeconomic impacts and origin and destination patterns are included as study objectives, both of which are fully documented in this report.
