sygmatic: Contesting the Classroom Erin Twohig, 2019-11-05 Contesting the Classroom explores how Algerian and Moroccan novels depict the postcolonial classroom, and how postcolonial literature has been taught in Morocco and Algeria. It argues that Arabized education has indelibly influenced the development of postcolonial novels, which have a deeply fraught yet endlessly creative relationship to the classroom. |

sygmatic: Greek Texts and Armenian Traditions Francesca Gazzano, Lara Pagani, Giusto Traina, 2016-08-22 An interdisciplinary approach, crucial as it is in most fields of research, proves itself to be unescapable in the study of interactions between the ancient Armenian and Greek worlds and literatures. The volume arises from such an awareness and collects papers presented in a conference which has been organized in 2013 at the University of Genova, thanks to a cooperation with the Université Paris-Sorbonne, following in the footsteps of a tradition inaugurated by Giancarlo Bolognesi in the years '80 and '90. The subject is explored from many points of view: the topic of Armenian translations of Greek texts – with considerations of a methodological nature and the discussion of case-studies –, aspects which pertain to the historical context and the historiographical sources, the wide theme of the Armenian reception of Biblical, Christian and Byzantine literature, and finally philological, linguistic and lexical problems. The aim of this kind of research is to exploit the cooperation among classical philologists, linguists and Armenologists, in order to face the challenge of investigating a subject which requires many different competences. |

sygmatic: Linguistic Perspectives on Romance Languages William J. Ashby, Marianne Mithun, Giorgio Perissinotto, 1993-07-08 This volume presents a selection of the best papers from the 1991 Linguistic Symposium on Romance Languages, held in Santa Barbara. In addition, the volume contains revised versions of three of the keynote papers. A welcome aspect of this collection, reflective of the conference itself, is the recurrent incorporation of historical and social factors into explanations of linguistic form. |
sygmatic: The Ethics of Reading in Manuscript Culture John Dagenais, 1994-02-18 Reexamining the roles played by author, reader, scribe, and text in medieval literary practice, John Dagenais argues that the entire physical manuscript must be the basis of any discussion of how meaning was made. Medievalists, he maintains, have relied too heavily on critical editions that seek to create a single, definitive text reflecting an author's intentions. In reality, manuscripts bear not only authorial texts but also a variety of elements added by scribes and readers: glosses, marginal notes, pointing hands, illuminations, and fragments of other, seemingly unrelated works. Using the surviving manuscripts of the fourteenth-century Libro de buen amor, a work that has been read both as didactic treatise on spiritual love and as a celebration of sensual pleasures, Dagenais shows how consideration of the physical manuscripts and their cultural context can shed new light on interpretive issues that have puzzled modern readers. Dagenais also addresses the theory and practice of reading in the Middle Ages, showing that for medieval readers the text on the manuscript leaf, including the text of the Libro, was primarily rhetorical and ethical in nature. It spoke to them directly, individually, always in the present moment. Exploring the margins of the manuscripts of the Libro and of other Iberian works, Dagenais reveals how medieval readers continually reshaped their texts, both physically and ethically as they read, and argues that the context of medieval manuscript culture forces us to reconsider such comfortable received notions as text and literature and the theories we have based upon them. |
sygmatic: Society: Progress and Force (Criteria and First Principles) Олег Арин / Алекс Бэттлер, As a sequel to Dialectics of Force: Ontόbia, this book is dedicated to the progress and force of society—topics that at first glance may seem trite, since mountains of literature are written on this subject. The author, however, having conscientiously presented the views on progress and force of all prominent thinkers over the past and the present chose to follow a distinct path and formulated the criteria of progress based on entirely different scientific paradigms. Moreover, he dared to formulate the two Principles of Social Development, which are akin in their fundamental nature to the first and second laws of thermodynamics. This book is intended for teachers and students of philosophical and social sciences, as well as for all those who are interested in the problems of man and humanity. |
sygmatic: Dialectics of Force: Ontóbia. Олег Арин/Алекс Бэттлер, In this book, for the first time in world scientific literature, the category of Force is presented as an attribute of matter alongside motion, space, and time. This has enabled the author to develop a different approach to the Big Bang, to give a new formulation of the border between life and the inorganic world, and to offer his own interpretation in the disputes on the mind–body problem. The category of Ontological Force formulated by the author has allowed him to develop a new definition of the concept of Progress, which creates a methodological basis for fruitful research in the fields of the social sciences and international relations. |
sygmatic: 200 Years of Syntax Giorgio Graffi, 2001 This book argues convincingly against the widespread opinion that very few syntactic studies were carried out before the 1950s. Relying on the detailed analysis of a large amount of original sources, it shows that syntactic matters were in fact carefully investigated throughout both the 19th century and during the first half of the 20th century. Moreover, it illustrates how the enormous development of syntactic research in the last fifty years has already condemned even several recent ideas and analyses to oblivion, and deeply influenced current research programs. The wealth of research undertaken over the last two centuries is presented here in a systematic way, taking as its starting point the relationship of syntax with psychology throughout this period. The critical ideas expressed in the text are based on a detailed illustration of the different syntactic models and analyses rather than on the polemics between the different schools. |

One of the main objectives of EWHCI is to foster professional and personal contacts between researchers in the former Soviet Union and researchers from the rest of the world. The volume contains revised versions of the 20 best papers selected from the 37 papers accepted for presentation at the conference and covers three basic themes: theoretical and empirical underpinnings of HCI, implemented systems, and the relationship of HCI to other fields. The papers are organized in sections on foundations of HCI, empirical studies and applications, environments, architectures, learning and teaching, and hypertext. |
