sks value guide: Guide to Internet Cryptography Jörg Schwenk, 2022-11-25 Research over the last two decades has considerably expanded knowledge of Internet cryptography, revealing the important interplay between standardization, implementation, and research. This practical textbook/guide is intended for academic courses in IT security and as a reference guide for Internet security. It describes important Internet standards in a language close to real-world cryptographic research and covers the essential cryptographic standards used on the Internet, from WLAN encryption to TLS and e-mail security. From academic and non-academic research, the book collects information about attacks on implementations of these standards (because these attacks are the main source of new insights into real-world cryptography). By summarizing all this in one place, this useful volume can highlight cross-influences in standards, as well as similarities in cryptographic constructions. Topics and features: · Covers the essential standards in Internet cryptography · Integrates work exercises and problems in each chapter · Focuses especially on IPsec, secure e-mail and TLS · Summarizes real-world cryptography in three introductory chapters · Includes necessary background from computer networks · Keeps mathematical formalism to a minimum, and treats cryptographic primitives mainly as blackboxes · Provides additional background on web security in two concluding chapters Offering a uniquely real-world approach to Internet cryptography, this textbook/reference will be highly suitable to students in advanced courses on cryptography/cryptology, as well as eminently useful to professionals looking to expand their background and expertise. Professor Dr. Jörg Schwenk holds the Chair for Network and Data Security at the Ruhr University in Bochum, Germany. He (co-)authored about 150 papers on the book’s topics, including for conferences like ACM CCS, Usenix Security, IEEE S&P, and NDSS. |

sks value guide: Value Sensitive Design Batya Friedman, David G. Hendry, 2019-05-21 Using our moral and technical imaginations to create responsible innovations: theory, method, and applications for value sensitive design. Implantable medical devices and human dignity. Private and secure access to information. Engineering projects that transform the Earth. Multigenerational information systems for international justice. How should designers, engineers, architects, policy makers, and others design such technology? Who should be involved and what values are implicated? In Value Sensitive Design, Batya Friedman and David Hendry describe how both moral and technical imagination can be brought to bear on the design of technology. With value sensitive design, under development for more than two decades, Friedman and Hendry bring together theory, methods, and applications for a design process that engages human values at every stage. After presenting the theoretical foundations of value sensitive design, which lead to a deep rethinking of technical design, Friedman and Hendry explain seventeen methods, including stakeholder analysis, value scenarios, and multilifespan timelines. Following this, experts from ten application domains report on value sensitive design practice. Finally, Friedman and Hendry explore such open questions as the need for deeper investigation of indirect stakeholders and further method development. This definitive account of the state of the art in value sensitive design is an essential resource for designers and researchers working in academia and industry, students in design and computer science, and anyone working at the intersection of technology and society. |
sks value guide: Climate Change Denial Haydn Washington, John Cook, 2013-05-13 Humans have always used denial. When we are afraid, guilty, confused, or when something interferes with our self-image, we tend to deny it. Yet denial is a delusion. When it impacts on the health of oneself, or society, or the world it becomes a pathology. Climate change denial is such a case. Paradoxically, as the climate science has become more certain, denial about the issue has increased. The paradox lies in the denial. There is a denial industry funded by the fossil fuel companies that literally denies the science, and seeks to confuse the public. There is denial within governments, where spin-doctors use 'weasel words' to pretend they are taking action. However there is also denial within most of us, the citizenry. We let denial prosper and we resist the science. It also explains the social science behind denial. It contains a detailed examination of the principal climate change denial arguments, from attacks on the integrity of scientists, to impossible expectations of proof and certainty to the cherry picking of data. Climate change can be solved - but only when we cease to deny that it exists. This book shows how we can break through denial, accept reality, and thus solve the climate crisis. It will engage scientists, university students, climate change activists as well as the general public seeking to roll back denial and act. |

sks value guide: Rising Sea Levels Hunt Janin, Scott A. Mandia, 2012-10-25 The fundamental point of this book is that, in the past, the world's political, economic, military and social development took place during a time of relatively stable sea level. That time, however, is now over: The world must begin to cope with rising seas. This book is a wide-ranging introductory survey. It addresses global warming, the hydrologic cycle, why we should care about the rise of the oceans, storm surges and other extreme events, the changing seas and their shorelines, cities and countries of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian ocean basins, the West Antarctic Ice Sheet and the Greenland Ice Sheet, case studies on how the Netherlands and the U.S. plan to cope with sea level rise, the likely impacts of this rise, getting to know the experts on sea level rise, and very long term prospects for the world's shorelines. |

sks value guide: The Ikigai Journey Hector Garcia, Francesc Miralles, 2020-06 InThe Ikigai Journey, authors Hector Garcia and Francesc Miralles take their international bestsellerIkigai: the Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life a step further by showing you how to find your ownikigai through practical exercises, such as employing new habits and stepping outside your comfort zone. Ikigai is the place where our passion (what we love), mission (what we hope to contribute), vocation (the gifts we have to offer the world) and profession (how our passions and talents can become a livelihood) converge, giving us a personal sense of meaning. This book helps you bring together all of these elements so that you can enjoy a balanced life. Ourikigai is very similar to change: it is a constant that transforms depending on which phase of life we are in. Our reason for being is not the same at 15 as it is at 70. Through three sections, this book helps you to accept and embrace that--acting as a tool to revolutionize your future by helping you to understand the past, so you can enjoy your present. Section 1--Journey Through the Future: Tokyo (a symbol of modernity and innovation) Section 2--Journey Through the Past: Kyoto (an ancient capital moored in tradition) Section 3--Journey Through the Present: Ise(an ancient shrine that is destroyed and rebuilt every twenty years) Japan has one of the longest life spans in the world, and the greatest number of centenarians--many of whom cite their strong sense ofikigai as the basis for their happiness and longevity. Unlike many self-care practices, which require setting aside time in an increasingly busy world, theikigai method helps you find peace and fulfillment in your busy life. |
sks value guide: Investment Banking Giuliano Iannotta, 2010-01-12 From a historical point of view, the main activity of investment banks is what today we call security underwriting. Investment banks buy securities, such as bonds and stocks, from an issuer and then sell them to the ?nal investors. In the eighteenth century, the main securities were bonds issued by governments. The way these bonds were priced and placed is extraordinarily similar to the system that inve- ment banks still use nowadays. When a government wanted to issue new bonds, it negotiated with a few prominent “middlemen” (today we would call them investment bankers). The middlemen agreed to take a fraction of the bonds: they accepted to do so only after having canvassed a list of people they could rely upon. The people on the list were the ?nal investors. The middlemen negotiated with the government even after the issuance. Indeed, in those days governments often changed unilaterally the bond conditions and being on the list of an important middleman could make the difference. On the other hand, middlemen with larger lists were considered to be in a better bargaining position. This game was repeated over time, and hence, reputation mattered. For the middlemen, being trusted by both the investors on the list and by the issuing governments was crucial. |

sks value guide: Creative Community Organizing Si Kahn, 2010-02-15 A practical guide to community organizing that gathers the accumulated lessons, strategies, and secrets a veteran activist’s fourty-four years of experience. This latest work by legendary activist, musician, and author Si Kahn is a different kind of community organizing book. As with other books, including some by Kahn himself, it does describe many of the practical tactics organizers use. But it’s also about community organizing as a way of thinking and a way of life. For Kahn, it has been a way of life. He has been intimately involved in some of the most important progressive struggles of the past fifty years—the civil rights movement, the Harlan County miners’ strike, the fight against prison privatization, and many more. In this unique and moving book he uses his experiences and those of the people he’s worked with to illuminate critical aspects of organizing not touched upon by more conventional manuals. The stories Kahn tells are entertaining, funny, sad, and inspiring, but they’re more than that—they’re examples of creative community organizing in action. And like the secular rabbi he calls himself, Kahn lays out the specific lessons each tale is meant to teach—not only strategy and tactics, but advice on how to deal on a personal level with the demands of a difficult but vitally important job. Creative Community Organizing will help established organizers become more innovative and encourage them to question established principles and decide if they still work. Aspiring organizers will discover a whole new way of looking at the world—they’ll gain a sense of empowerment, understand that they can live and work in ways that help make the world more just and humane. With forewords by Angela Davis and Jim Hightower “Make room, Howard Zinn! Si Kahn’s Creative Community Organizing deserves a place on the must-read shelf next to A People’s History of the United States. Warm, cheerful, candid, and wise—just like the man himself—Si’s book is more than a how-to for justice seekers, more than a gripping memoir from the front lines of bodacious modern activism. It’s the up-close and creative story of how the “people’s history” gets made.” —Jay Harris, Publisher, Mother Jones “Creative Community Organizing documents Si Kahn’s career of working for justice in ways that are deeply affecting, personally and culturally. Si is truly Democracy’s Troubadour, bringing us not just the songs and stories of democracy and justice but also the practical strategies to deepen our democratic roots.” —Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin |
