Their child, Zuzu, who was named at Jules' insistence after a key character in the Capra film, has herself sensed that something is amiss in her parents' dealings with each other. The story is set centrally during a Christmas pageant during which parents are watching the event entirely through the mediated lens of a video camera, missing the live, real event (which admittedly is itself mediated through senses, the eyes). It explores the effects that both old and new technologies have on spouses, lovers, parents, and children, and how one attempts to negotiate worlds of reality and fiction, especially when that which is make-believe is so obviously preferred, as is the case with Jules, the central character. |
