spindle moulder techniques: Handbook of Breadmaking Technology C. A. Stear, 2012-12-06 The author's aim in writing this book is to integrate currently available knowledge concerning the basic scientific and technological aspects of breadmaking processes with the diverse breadmaking methods used to manufacture bread in Europe and on the North American continent today. To date, the main technological advances have been in process mechanization, starting with oven development, then dough processing or make-up equipment, followed by continuous and batch mixing techniques from the 1950s to the present time. On the engineering side, universal emphasis is now being placed on the application of high technology, in the form of microprocessors, computer-controlled equipment and robotization, the long-term objective being computer integrated manufacture (CIM) with full automation within the large chain bakery groups in the capitalist countries and the state-run collectives of Eastern Europe. The application of these key technologies with biotechnology, as yet only applied to a limited degree in food manufacture, coupled with advances in biochemical and rheological understanding of dough as a biomass for breadmaking, should provide us with more expertise and ability to control the processes with greater efficiency. The application of fermentable substrates and industrial enzymes under strict kinetic control should contribute to improving the flavour characteristics of bread. Current trends towards improving the nutritional contribution of bread to the daily diet are improving the competitive edge of bread as a basic food in the market-place. |

spindle moulder techniques: Handplane Essentials, Revised & Expanded Christopher Schwarz, 2017-08-10 Everything you need to use your handplanes! No woodworking tool is more satisfying, quick and precise to use than a handplane. Planes can process timber in its rough state, bring boards up to a glimmering smoothness, cut rabbets, dados, grooves and other joints, and trim wood with a precision that has yet to be matched by power tools. Yet many woodworkers--both beginners and professionals--are intimidated by handplanes. This book is here to set the record straight. Handplane Essentials contains everything you need to choose the right plane for your project (and for your budget), sharpen it and use it successfully. Compiled from more than 15 years of the author's writings on the subject of handplanes in magazines, trade journals and blogs, this book is an indispensable guide for woodworkers. This revised edition includes 14 new articles as well as new and updated tool reviews. |

spindle moulder techniques: Craftwork as Problem Solving Trevor H.J. Marchand, 2017-05-15 This volume brings together a cross-disciplinary group of anthropologists, researchers of craft, and designer-makers to enumerate and explore the diversity and complexity of problem-solving tactics and strategies employed by craftspeople, together with the key social, cultural, and environmental factors that give rise to particular ways of problem solving. Presenting rich, textured ethnographic studies of craftspeople at work around the world, Craftwork as Problem Solving examines the intelligent practices involved in solving a variety of problems and the ways in which these are perceived and evaluated both by makers and creators themselves, and by the societies in which they work. With attention to local factors such as training regimes and formal education, access to tools, socialisation and cultural understanding, budgetary constraints and market demands, changing technologies and materials, and political and economic regimes, this book sheds fresh light on the multifarious forms of intelligence involved in design and making, inventing and manufacturing, and cultivating and producing. As such, it will appeal to scholars of anthropology, sociology, and cultural geography, as well as to craftspeople with interests in creativity, skilful practice, perception and ethnography. |
spindle moulder techniques: Making and Growing Elizabeth Hallam, Tim Ingold, 2016-05-13 Making and Growing brings together the latest work in the fields of anthropology and material culture studies to explore the differences - and the relation - between making things and growing things, and between things that are made and things that grow. Though the former are often regarded as artefacts and the latter as organisms, the book calls this distinction into question, examining the implications for our understanding of materials, design and creativity. Grounding their arguments in case studies from different regions and historical periods, the contributors to this volume show how making and growing give rise to co-produced and mutually modifying organisms and artefacts, including human persons. They attend to the properties of materials and to the forms of knowledge and sensory experience involved in these processes, and explore the dynamics of making and undoing, growing and decomposition. The book will be of broad interest to scholars in the fields of anthropology, archaeology, material culture studies, history and sociology. |

The book contains references to the companion volume by the same authors (Bench and Site Skills) and to the relevant regulations and standards. Together with Carpentry and Joinery: Bench and Site Skills this book will form an invaluable resource for students long after they qualify. Brian Porter and Reg Rose were both formerly lecturers at the Leeds College of Building. They are authors of several successful books on carpentry and joinery. |
