sinners in the hands of angry god: Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God Jonathan Edwards , FELIPE CHAVARRO POLANIA, 2019-08-15 Preached at Enfield, Connecticut on July 8, 1741, this is perhaps the greatest sermon ever preached in America—and is certainly among the most well known. Owing to its forthright dealing with God’s wrath and His intense hatred of sin and the sinner, it is also one of the most controversial. Indeed, for more than three-quarters of the sermon Edwards lays down a relentless stream of the most vivid and horrifying descriptions of the danger facing unregenerate men. While it is difficult to read such graphic language, there is abundant hope in the sermon’s conclusion. Edwards puts it this way, “And now you have an extraordinary opportunity, a day wherein Christ has thrown the door of mercy wide open and stands calling and crying with a loud voice to poor sinners.” While those who would rather ignore God’s justice in favor of His mercy condemn Edwards and his sermon, those who were present and actually heard him preach that day reacted in a decidedly different manner. According to the diary of Reverend Stephen Williams who attended the sermon, “Before the sermon was done there was a great moaning and crying through the whole House, ‘what shall I do to be saved; oh, I am going to hell, etc.’” The diary goes on to indicate that Edwards had to interrupt his sermon and come down to minister to those who were under such awful conviction. And so, in spite of what the scoffers might think or say, “the amazing and astonishing power of God” was manifested among the people that day—with many falling not into the hands of an angry God, but into the arms of a mighty Savior. |
sinners in the hands of angry god: Sinners in the Hands of a Loving God Brian Zahnd, 2017-08-15 Pastor Brian Zahnd began to question the theology of a wrathful God who delights in punishing sinners, and has started to explore the real nature of Jesus and His Father. The book isn’t only an interesting look at the context of some modern theological ideas; it’s also offers some profound insight into God’s love and eternal plan. —Relevant Magazine (Named one of the Top 10 Books of 2017) God is wrath? Or God is Love? In his famous sermon “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God,” Puritan revivalist Jonathan Edwards shaped predominating American theology with a vision of God as angry, violent, and retributive. Three centuries later, Brian Zahnd was both mesmerized and terrified by Edwards’s wrathful God. Haunted by fear that crippled his relationship with God, Zahnd spent years praying for a divine experience of hell. What Zahnd experienced instead was the Father’s love—revealed perfectly through Jesus Christ—for all prodigal sons and daughters. In Sinners in the Hands of a Loving God, Zahnd asks important questions like: Is seeing God primarily as wrathful towards sinners true or biblical? Is fearing God a normal expected behavior? And where might the natural implications of this theological framework lead us? Thoughtfully wrestling with subjects like Old Testament genocide, the crucifixion of Jesus, eternal punishment in hell, and the final judgment in Revelation, Zanhd maintains that the summit of divine revelation for sinners is not God is wrath, but God is love. |

sinners in the hands of angry god: Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God Jason Dollar, Jonathan Edwards, 2015-10-14 Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God is the best known work of Jonathan Edwards, preeminent pastor and theologian. It was providentially used during the First Great Awakening to open the minds and hearts of many to the reality of God's existence and the fierceness of his coming judgment. With vivid imagery and an unrelenting pressing, Edwards warns of the horrors of hell, prodding his listeners to flee the coming wrath and run to Christ. This volume also includes another classic Edwards sermon, Love the Sum of All virtue. Both sermons have been updated for modern readers, keeping all of Edwards' ideas and voice, but presented in a form that today's readers can easily digest. |

sinners in the hands of angry god: The Evangelical Universalist Gregory MacDonald, 2012-11-15 Can an orthodox Christian, committed to the historic faith of the Church and the authority of the Bible, be a universalist? Is it possible to believe that salvation is found only by grace, through faith in Christ, and yet to maintain that in the end all people will be saved? Can one believe passionately in mission if one does not think that anyone will be lost forever? Could universalism be consistent with the teachings of the Bible? This book argues that the answer is 'yes' to all of these questions. Weaving together philosophical, theological and biblical considerations, the author shows that being a universalist is consistent with the central teachings of the Bible and of historic Christian theology. |

sinners in the hands of angry god: The Day the Revolution Began Tom Wright, 2016-10-11 In The Day the Revolution Began Tom Wright invites you to consider the full meaning of the event at the heart of the Christian faith - Jesus' crucifixion. As he did in his acclaimed Surprised by Hope, Wright once again challenges commonly held beliefs, this time arguing that the Protestant Reformation did not go far enough in reshaping our understanding of the Cross. With his characteristic rigour and incisiveness, he goes back to the New Testament to show that Jesus' death not only releases us from the guilt and power of sin, but is nothing less than the beginning of a world-wide revolution that continues to this day – a revolution that creates and energizes a movement responsible for restoring and reconciling the whole of God's creation. The Day the Revolution Began will take you to a new level in your appreciation of the meaning of Jesus' sacrifice: opening up its powerful and amazing implications, inspiring you with a renewed sense of purpose and hope, and reminding you of the crucial role you can play in the world-transforming movement that Jesus started. |
sinners in the hands of angry god: Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God Jonathan Edwards, 2012-03 Jonathan Edwards' sermon Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God is arguably the most famous sermon ever preached. It is an eloquent but passionate plea to take God's displeasure with man as the dire circumstance that it is. A profound love for sinners and a pastor's heart motivated Edwards to preach this immortal address, a message as relevant today as it was then. His comprehensive urging of natural man to be born again is a masterful exercise in addressing all arguments that God's judgment and condemnation of sinners to hell can be averted by any effort of mankind. He speaks of man's schemes and man's wisdom as utter foolishness. Edwards backs up every claim he makes with Holy Scripture. He well knows that there are people in the very congregation he is speaking to that will scoff and rebelliously turn their deaf ear to it and thereby die without excuse. How about you dear reader? Will you harken to God's fervent plea to you through His faithful servant Jonathan Edwards and be saved by His grace? Will you rejoice in the power, love and mercy of God, and no longer be bound by fear of death? To read this minister's powerful warnings offers yet another chance to be saved from a God that is both justly angry over sin and yet still willing, able and ready to save us through the atoning death of His dear Son the Lord Jesus Christ. The message is a fiery one, but that's the point. Read it and live! As an added bonus this edition also includes the famous address by C. H. Spurgeon, Turn or Burn. |

sinners in the hands of angry god: Church of Cowards Matt Walsh, 2020-02-25 What Would You Surrender for God? Christians in the Middle East, in much of Asia, and in Africa are still being martyred for the faith, but how many American Christians are willing to lay down their smartphones, let alone their lives, for the faith? Being a Christian in America doesn’t require much these days. Suburban megachurches are more like entertainment venues than places to worship God. The lives that American “Christians” lead aren’t much different from those of their atheist neighbors, and their knowledge of theology isn’t much better either. Matt Walsh of The Daily Wire exposes the pitiful state of Christianity in America today, lays out the stakes for us, our families, and our eternal salvation, and invites us to a faith that’s a lot less easy and comfortable—but that’s more real and actually worth something. The spiritual junk food we’re stuffing ourselves with is never going to satisfy. As St. Augustine said over a millennium ago, our hearts are restless until they rest in Him. Only God Himself can make our lives anything but ultimately meaningless and empty. And we will never get anywhere near Him if we refuse to take up our cross and follow Jesus. This rousing call to the real adventure of a living faith is a wake-up call to complacent Christians and a rallying cry for anyone dissatisfied with a lukewarm faith. |

Jonathan Edwards, a renowned theologian and preacher, was a key figure in the religious revival of the Great Awakening. His profound understanding of human nature and the divine power is evident in his writings, making him a significant voice in American religious history. Edwards' sermons reflect his commitment to awakening the masses to their spiritual realities and urging them to seek repentance and salvation. I highly recommend 'Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God and Other Sermons' to readers interested in exploring the intersection of religion, literature, and history. sinners in the hands of angry god: Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God Jonathan Edwards, 2015-07-08 Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God Sermons of Jonathan Edwards Jonathan Edwards Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God is a sermon written by British Colonial Christian theologian Jonathan Edwards, preached to his own congregation in Northampton, Massachusetts to unknown effect, and again on July 8, 1741 in Enfield, Connecticut. Like Edwards' other works, it combines vivid imagery of Hell with observations of the world and citations of the scripture. It is Edwards' most famous written work, is a fitting representation of his preaching style, and is widely studied by Christians and historians, providing a glimpse into the theology of the Great Awakening of c. 1730-1755. This is a typical sermon of the Great Awakening, emphasizing the belief that Hell is a real place. Edwards hoped that the imagery and message of his sermon would awaken his audience to the horrific reality that awaited them should they continue without Christ. The underlying point is that God has given humanity a chance to rectify their sins. Edwards says that it is the will of God that keeps wicked men from the depths of Hell. This act of restraint has given humanity a chance to mend their ways and return to Christ. |
