The invention of photography changed how history could be written. But the now commonplace assumptions--that photographs capture fragments of lost time or present emotional gateways to the past--that structure today's understandings did not emerge whole cloth in 1839. Focusing on one of photography's birthplaces, Paris and the Cliché of History tells the story of how photographs came to be imagined as documents of the past. Author Catherine E. Clark analyzes photography's effects on historical interpretation by examining the formation of Paris's first photo archives at the Musée Carnavalet and the city's municipal library, their use in illustrated history books and historical exhibitions and reconstructions such as the 1951 celebration of Paris's 2000th birthday, and the public's contribution to the historical record in amateur photo contests. Despite the photograph's growing importance in these forums, it did not simply replace older forms of illustration, visual documentation, or written text. Photos worked in complex and shifting relation to other types of pictures as photographers, popular historians, and publishers built on the traditions and iconography of painting and engraving in order to both document the past scientifically and objectively and to reconstruct it romantically. Thirty-five years and several editions later, that description still holds true of this expanded work. The new dictionary summarizes salient facts about its subjects' lives and discusses their film credits in terms of the quality of the filmmakers' work. In ambition it has competitors, including Leslie Halliwell's various editions of Halliwell's Filmgoers Companion (12th ed., 1997) and Halliwell's Who's Who in the Movies, edited by John Walker (4th ed., rev. and updated, 2006), which cover films and technical terms (categories not included in Thomson's), but whose entries are neutral and exceedingly brief. Additionally, Francophile Richard Roud's edited Cinema: A Critical Dictionary: The Major Filmmakers (2 v., 1980) is as passionate a work as Thomson's, but narrower in scope, with entries written by various experts, rather than only by Roud. Finally, the multivolume magnum opus The International Dictionary of Films and Filmmakers (4th ed., 2000, ed. by T. Pendergast and S. Pendergast; 2nd ed., ed. by N. Thomas, v. 1, CH, May'91; 1st ed., ed. by C. The story unfolds between the cubicle rows of corporate America, then -in reminiscenceleads us down the thistle-strewn lanes between the hedgerows of Gloucestershire, and beyond. While others exchange the customary greeting, Busy? Crazy as usualyou? the author daydreams in meetings about travels past and planned. It seems he has mentally dropped out. But is there more behind his casual veneer? To find out, we trace back to a younger self, who has walked off his job and persuaded his considerably less impulsive romantic interest to do the same. They dodge terrorists bombs in Paris, get fogged in on a remote Alpine mountainside with a gnarled crone and a band of yodeling mountain men, stage a Chinese fire drill on a Roman bus, and are mobbed by babushka-clad matrons in the former Yugoslavia. Passionate and demonstrative, he revels in his freedom, while she guards her feelings -and guards against being left without a room for the night. Looking closer to find her, he is drawn past the surface of their surroundings, and changed in a way that he never expected. He returns to his old work life, enervated by a new outlook. Fourteen years later, married and stably employed, they return to Europe on a three-week vacation, with a much younger sister-in-law and her freeloading college classmate in tow. Confronting how the intervening years have changed him provides another learning experience, and it is travel once again that teaches him to be comfortable with his journey through life. |

And then in 1976, in his apartment turned into a home studio, he composes a record of instrumental music that nobody wants: Oxygène. Producer Francis Dreyfus accepts to release the album and it's a revolution.
