A better understanding of her diagnosis would have added more quality to the time we shared. Experiencing the loss of my paternal grandmother was another taxing experience. Though her diagnosis did not rob her of her cognitive ability, Cancer certainly took everything else. During this experience, my knowledge base for the situation was greater. Therefore, medical attention, placement, and long-term planning were much easier. Most recently, the loss of my maternal grandfather was a challenge that tugged on every ounce of knowledge, experience, and emotion possible. Within a 7-month period, I watched my grandfather drift from what most called, The World's Oldest Teenager to being completely bedridden and dependent on others for care. Heart attack, stroke, cancer, kidney failure, dialysis, feeding tube, tracheostomy, cardiac arrest, and resuscitation were only among the most significant challenges that he endured. Fortunately, my family and I were able to make informed decisions to assure that he maintained quality of life. Working in Senior care for over 20 years, I have been exposed to all aspects. I have consoled weeping widows. I have found placement for seniors who have no family. I have advocated for seniors who were mistreated by family and/or professionals. I have found assistance for seniors that wanted to remain at home but needed a little help. I have helped family to understand that Hospice is actually very beneficial and not death sentence. I have hired good caregivers. I have terminated poor caregivers. I have also provided Psychotherapy for seniors who suffer from depression and anxiety. In short, Seniors and their families experience the same issues as those in other populations. The study included a total of approximately 37,000 system type smoke detectors of which 69 percent were of ionization (ion) type and 31 percent photoelectric. 3000 duct detectors (90 percent ion and I0 percent photo). and 1100 smoke detector modules (80 percent ion and 20 percent photo) integral with door holder closers (DHC). Also, included are approximately 100 single station smoke alarms. Analysis of data collected from operating facilities through forms. site visits, and staff interviews, resulted in a series of recommendations which could result in a substantial reduction in observed false alarms. These recommendations include: Since the largest cause of false alarms was related to smoking, strict enforcement of smoking policies could have the greatest impact. Fire Department, 1993 In an effort to make early fire detection and suppression a fire management priority, a variety of fire detection and suppression systems have been installed in industrial buildings, general business occupancies, multi-occupancy residential complexes and single family residences. Although it is a great achievement for a community to encourage and/or require these systems in such occupancies, it has been the theory of this author that if they are not installed, serviced or maintained properly, a false sense of security can be developed which could result in improper human behavior as well as inappropriate response by fire suppression forces when an alarm is activated. Consequently, citizens and responders have been complacent and have become victims of the false alarm mode. The purpose of this project was to determine the number and causes of false alarm responses in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, and to develop an action plan for reducing them.
