Global change can be defined as the impact of human activity on the fundamental mechanisms of biosphere functioning. Therefore, global change includes not only climate change, but also habitat transformation, water cycle modification, biodiversity loss, synanthropic incursion of alien species into new territories, or introduction of new chemicals in nature. On this respect, some of the effects of global change on vector-borne diseases can be currently evaluated. Globalization has enabled the movement of parasites, viruses and vectors among different countries, or even at intercontinental level. On this regard, it is important to note that the increase of imported malaria cases in different Southern European countries has led to the re-appearance of autochthonous cases of disease transmission. Moreover, the used tire trade, together with global warming, have facilitated the introduction, spread and establishment of potential Dengue tropical vectors, such as Aedes aegypti or Aedes albopictus in temperate areas. Consequently, recently the first Dengue indigenous cases in the last decades have been reported in different Southern areas of North America and Europe. Furthermore, habitat modification, mainly deforestation and transformation of aquatic environments, together with the changes in thermal and rainfall patterns, are two of the key factors to explain the increasing incidence of Leishmaniasis and several tick-borne diseases. Macintosh, 2012-12-06 A major concern among ecologists in and outside the ASEAN region is the degradation of the environment, and the overexploitation of freshwater and marine resources. There is as yet no indication that freshwater and marine resources are being managed on a sustainable basis, and loss of wetlands, whether freshwater swamps or mangrove swamps, is a major problem in the ASEAN region. Reclamation of mangrove swamps for aquaculture and agriculture seems to be a continuous activity here and the status of marine parks should also be examined in the light of recent resort development acitivities on small islands. This volume contains numerous recommendations for the promotion of ecological studies and regional cooperation in marine, freshwater ecology and conservation, with special emphasis on the common water masses like the Strait of Malacca, Gulf of Thailand and the South China Sea. |

The complexity of this problem is ineffably vast, ex ceeding by many orders of magnitude the theoretical and technical achievements concerning atomic energy or the exploration of space. Unlike these areas of endeavor, neuroscience is fortunate in knowing no national rivalries, and its only secrecies are those of language. The latter, however, are often highly effective in con cealing from workers in Los Angeles the discoveries of their co- leagues in Moscow. A cogent example is provided in this volume by Roy John (p. 179) whose experiments proceeded for several years before he discovered the important body of data accumulated earlier by Prof. Livanov and his colleagues utilizing the same ingenious technique of the tracer stimulus. Reduction of such occurrences is certainly one of the goals of the present book, which now becomes a double translation, a dozen of the papers having originally been translated into Russian. |
