The Naqshbandi order is a well-known mystical institution having a widespread historical and contemporary influence on the life of many Muslims all over the world, including the West. The book focuses particularly on the definitions and reflections of the members of this branch upon themselves and the wider modern ('western') society outside their close-knit community. It reveals that the Islamic discourse of the community encompasses a multitude of expressions by which the members' perceptions of their social and spiritual universe are shaped and communicated to a wider audience. And it concludes that a thorough analysis of an Islamic community should pay particular attention to three closely related discursive processes: (a) the reflections of such a community on the wider (modern) society of which it is a part; (b) the ways in which it defines itself as 'Islamic' and contests with other Muslim groups or movements for the representation of the 'correct model' of Islamic tradition; (c) the discourses of conflict and power within such a community. Tayfun Atay holds an MA in Area Studies (Near & Middle East) and a PhD in Social Anthropology from School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. He has done ethnographic fieldworks in London and many parts of Turkey, and published five monographs in Turkish. Currently, he is Professor of Ethnology in the Department of Folklore and Ethnology at the University of Ankara.

The term comprises such diverse experiences as increased devotion within the same religious structure, a shift from no religious commitment to a devout religious life, or a change from one religion to another. This study focuses on the conversion experiences of 70 native British converts to Islam. It addresses the following questions - why do people become Muslims, what are the backgrounds of the converts, what are the patterns of conversion to Islam, and how far are existing conversion theories applicable to the group under study. The full range of social and psychological forces at work in the conversion experience are examined with reference to the converts, whose whole life history - childhood, adolescent experiences and the conversion process itself - were examined in detail. Chapter 1 deals with the history and present situation of both life-long Muslims and converts living in Britain. Chapter 2 focuses on childhood and adolescent experiences reviewing the psychological and sociological theories of conversion and attempts to find out how far these theories are applicable to the converts to Islam. Chapter 3 examines the backgrounds of the converts regarding religion. It then analyzes the immediate antecedents of the conversion as well as the conversion process, focussing on version motifs. A conversion process model is also developed in this chapter. Chapter 4 looks at the post-conversion period to find out what changes the converts underwent. It also examines the relationship between converts, their parents and society at large. Chapter 5 reveals the findings on conversion through Sufism. Comparisons between conversion through Sufism and through new religious movements in the West are also made. This study should be an important addition to the study of religious conversion, as conversion to Islam either from outside or within Islam is widely neglected in the literature.

  sheikh hisham: Mahathir’s Islam Sven Schottmann, 2018-09-30 Mahathir Mohamad’s legacy as Malaysia’s longest serving prime minister (1981–2003) is deeply controversial. His engagement with Islam, the religion of just over half Malaysia’s population, has often been dismissed as partisan maneuvering. Yet his willingness to countenance a more prominent place for Islam in government and society is what distinguished him from other modernist politicians, and his instinct to set Malaysian politics against the backdrop of the wider Muslim world was politically astute. Author Sven Schottmann argues that Mahathir’s transformative effect on Malaysia can only be fully appreciated if we also take him seriously as one of the postcolonial Muslim world’s most significant political thought leaders. Schottmann sees Mahathir’s representations of Islam as a relatively coherent discourse that can legitimately be described as “Mahathir’s Islam.” This discourse contains Mahathir’s assessment of the economic, political, and sociocultural problems facing the contemporary Muslim world and the range of solutions and corrective measures that he proposed Muslims should adopt. His ideas are fraught with flaws and contradictions. On the one hand, he emphasized the individualistic, egalitarian, pluralistic, democratic, and dynamic qualities of Islam. On the other, his government enacted legislation and acquiesced in the activities of religious bodies that curtailed religious freedoms of both Muslims and non-Muslims. His ideas contributed to Malaysia’s worsening state of interethnic relations, yet his insistence that every Muslim had the right to speak for Islam may have, paradoxically, prepared the ground for a future democratization of Malaysian politics. It is the story of that angelic encounter as I experienced it. It happened many years ago, but the impressions are still vivid in my memory. It was not a fleeting glimpse of ethereal beings clothed in cloudy mist. Those angels were real. If seen from a distance they probably would have seemed like ordinary men. Close up, however, no one could have mistaken them for men. Anyone would have known they were angels who had come down from heaven. During their first appearance, it seemed to me their speech to me lasted a long time. In retrospect that time period probably could have been measured in minutes. That is true even though they seemed like very long minutes. They were silent during their brief second appearance; albeit puzzled and inquisitive. These angels had about them a mysterious air of another world. They stood in front of my chair, in my living room with an indescribable and lofty majesty. Their posture and demeanor spoke of another sphere of existence. A sphere about which writers have speculated for thousands of years. They somehow reeked of an indescribable physical and mental power that was beyond my comprehension. My initial reaction was fright. A fright so great it overwhelmed my senses. I thought they had come to kill me. That was a certainty in my numbed mind. That fear quickly became life threatening. I did not know it at the time but their actions and speech would be forever impressed on my memory. During their first visit, they were extremely anxious to reassure me. They did not wish me to fear them. Their speech was sympathetic and reassuring. They told me they had not come to injure me in any way.
