Her book sympathetically portrays the Sikh struggle for an independent homeland, revealing the efforts of ordinary people to keep themselves alive and to retain dignity in the years 1984-1992 when Sikh guerrillas and Indian government forces were engaged in a fierce battle for the control of the Punjab.
