shaka's rock history: Myth of Iron Dan Wylie, 2006 Over the decades we have heard a great deal about Shaka, the famous - or infamous - of Zulu leaders. It may come as a surprise, therefore, that we do not know when he was born, nor what he looked like, nor precisely when or why he was assassinated. This book lays out the available evidence - mainly hitherto under-utilised Zulu oral testimonies. |

shaka's rock history: Touching the Ancient One Rupert Pratt, 2006-04 On February 5, 1954, an Air Force C-47 broke apart over the Susitna Valley of South Central Alaska and fell onto Kesugi Ridge. Six miraculously escaped, survived bone-chilling cold, and were rescued through the efforts of pilots Cliff Hudson and Don Sheldon. Unacquainted with one another before the accident, the Air Force men bonded in the hospital. Forty-two years later, the survivors and their families, the families of the victims, and rescuers came together for a reunion in Dayton, Ohio. It was a meeting that would change their lives. This is a true story, told by one of the survivors. Rupert Pratt's book celebrates life and friendship--themes set appropriately against the backdrop of Kesugi, The Ancient One. |

shaka's rock history: The Mechanical Behavior of Salt X J.H.P. de Bresser, M.R. Drury, P. A. Fokker, M. Gazzani, S.J.T. Hangx, A.R. Niemeijer, C.J. Spiers, 2022-07-05 Rock salt formations have long been recognized as a valuable resource - not only for salt mining but for construction of oil and gas storage caverns and for isolation of radioactive and other hazardous wastes. Current interest is fast expanding towards construction and re-use of solution-mined caverns for storage of renewable energy in the form of hydrogen, compressed air and other gases. Evaluating the long term performance and safety of such systems demands an understanding of the coupled mechanical behavior and transport properties of salt. This volume presents a collection of 60 research papers defining the state-of-the-art in the field. Topics range from fundamental work on deformation mechanisms and damage of rock salt to compaction of engineered salt backfill. The latest constitutive models are applied in computational studies addressing the evolution and integrity of storage caverns, repositories, salt mines and entire salt formations, while field studies document ground truth at multiple scales. The volume is structured into seven themes: Microphysical processes and creep models Laboratory testing Geological isolation systems and geotechnical barriers Analytical and numerical modelling Monitoring and site-specific studies Cavern and borehole abandonment and integrity Energy storage in salt caverns The Mechanical Behavior of Salt X will appeal to graduate students, academics, engineers and professionals working in the fields of salt mechanics, salt mining and geological storage of energy and wastes, but also to researchers in rock physics in general. |

shaka's rock history: Studies in the History of Tax Law, Volume 8 Peter Harris, Dominic de Cogan, 2017-08-10 These are the papers from the 8th Cambridge Tax Law History Conference held in July 2016. In the usual manner, these papers have been selected from an oversupply of proposals for their interest and relevance, and scrutinised and edited to the highest standard for inclusion in this prestigious series. The papers fall within five basic themes: Two papers focus on tax theory; one on John Locke and another on the impact of English tax literature in the Netherlands in the nineteenth century. Five deal with the history of UK specific interpretational issues in varying contexts – an ancient exemption, insurance companies, special contribution, the profits tax GAAR and capital gains tax. Two more papers consider aspects of HMRC operations. Another three focus on facets of international taxation, including treaties between the UK and European countries, treaties between the UK and developing countries and the UN model tax treaties of 1928. The book also incorporates a range of interesting topics from other countries, including the introduction of income tax in Ireland and in Chile, post-war income taxation in Australia, early interpretation of 'income' in New Zealand and a discussion of some early indirect taxes in India and China. |

shaka's rock history: Applied Salt-Rock Mechanics 1 C.A. Baar, 2013-06-11 Applied Salt-Rock Mechanics, 1: The In-Situ Behavior of Salt Rocks considers the principles of the inelastic in-situ behavior of rock salts. This five-chapter text surveys the successful application of hypothesis in various salt deposits. This book deals first with the geological investigations concerning the genesis and geologic features of salt deposits, specifically the geology of evaporite formation. The following chapter describes the physical and mechanical properties of salt rocks, such as creep, strain, hardening, tensile and shearing strengths, permeability, and plasticity. The discussion then shifts to the mechanism of stress-relief creep occurring in salt rock by excavation. The last chapter examines stress-relief creep zones, which extend to the boundary of interbedded formations exhibiting elastic behavior. |
shaka's rock history: Salt Leslie Bilderback, 2016-09-06 Salt has been an essential dining element since the invention of the kitchen table. But today, specialty salts come in a vast variety of forms and flavors. Smokey salts, salts infused with clay or charcoal, herby and spicy salts, salt with extra umami or a hint of sugar are being added to many recipes, to layer more flavor, and not simply to enhance the flavors already there. It’s a feast for the tongue, and colorful salts also add visual interest to dishes, and the varying textures add crunch. But how do you decide which to buy—and how do you get the most out of them once you’ve brought them back home to your kitchen? Salt will show you how to choose and how use them in simple, delicious recipes for every meal of the day. You will learn how to cook, cure, and bake with them. Plus, you’ll find a market guide that describes the different types of specialty and infused salts, discover ways to cook with salt blocks, and even how to organize your own salt tasting at home. More than 100 mouthwatering recipes—plus nearly 50 varieties of infused salts—with beautiful, full-color photography will help you transform this classic, humble ingredient into a star seasoning. |
