sandy charles: Olive Hill Willie Davis, 2020-08-27 Carter County, Kentucky was blessed with an abundance of diverse natural resources, including timber, iron ore, coal, and limestone. During the Industrial Revolution one of its towns, Olive Hill, became the center of a 600 square mile hotbed of fireclay, a unique heat-resistant clay used to make firebricks. For decades, thousands of hard-working Olive Hillians dug, moulded, and fired that uncommon clay into hundreds of thousands of firebricks per day to line open hearth steel furnaces, locomotive fireboxes, and steamship boilers. Without the steel, there would be no skyscrapers and no rail lines. Without the trains and ships, there would be no movement to expedite a growing nation. Olive Hill firebricks helped make this possible. Olive Hill and its people gave all that it had in a time it was most needed until a time it was needed no more. More people need to know the Olive Hill story. More people need to know more American History. Olive Hill is a historical fiction novel that follows the Reed family from May, 1800 thru June, 1959. This is the Olive Hill story as I see it!

sandy charles: Overcoming the Odds Jennie E. Brand, 2023-08-31 Each year, millions of high school students consider whether to continue their schooling and attend and complete college. Despite evidence showing that a college degree yields far-reaching benefits, critics of higher education increasingly argue that college “does not pay off” and some students - namely, disadvantaged prospective college goers - would be better served by forgoing higher education. But debates about the value of college often fail to carefully consider what is required to speak knowledgeably about the benefits –what a person’s life might look like had they not completed college, or their college counterfactual. In Overcoming the Odds sociologist Jennie E. Brand reveals the benefits of completing college by comparing life outcomes of college graduates with their college counterfactuals. Drawing on two cohorts of nationally representative data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics National Longitudinal Surveys program, Brand uses matching and machine learning methods to estimate the effects of college completion across students with varying likelihoods of completing four-year degrees. To illustrate her findings, Brand describes outcomes using matched vignettes of college and non-college graduates. Brand shows that four-year college completion enables graduates to increase wages and household income, while also circumventing unemployment, low-wage work, job instability, poverty, and social assistance. Completing college also increases civic engagement. Most of these benefits are larger for disadvantaged than for more advantaged students, rendering arguments that college has limited benefits for unlikely graduates as flawed. Brand concludes that greater long-term earnings, and less job instability and unemployment, and thus more tax revenue, less reliance on public assistance, and high levels of volunteering indicate that public investment in higher education for students from disadvantaged backgrounds yields far-reaching collective benefits. She asserts that it is better for our society when more people complete college. Overcoming the Odds is an innovative and enlightening exploration of how college can transform lives.

sandy charles: Memories of Thompson Orphanage Stella Henson Griggs Batson, 2014-09-09 The stories in this book are true. They will give you a glimpse into the lives of little children who are now grown men and women. However, before you read the stories, there is a brief history of the orphanage that I believe you will find interesting. No longer is the orphanage downtown Charlotte but moved outside the city limits to the orphanage farm on St. Peters Lane, Matthews, North Carolina. This is where our lake was and where the earlier children used to have so much enjoyment. Most of them in these stories mention the farm and the lake. These small children would have had little chance to grow up into strong men and women who could go out into the world and compete with the best of men had it not been for people who cared. In the cases of the people in these stories, it was Thompson Orphanage in Charlotte, North Carolina, the Episcopal Church, and others that gave willingly toward the support of the orphanage. You will get a glimpse into the lives of individuals from the day they went to Thompson Orphanage until this day. Also, another purpose of this book is help the public understand orphanages. So many people feel sorry for children in orphanages. These are blessed children because they were given the chance in life that so many others needed but were not as fortunate. The ones to feel sorry for are those whose families cant afford to care for their children and those children who are abused, neglected, and have no one to help them escape their situation.

sandy charles: Disabilities of the Color Line Dennis Tyler, 2022-02-15 Winner of the 2023 Phi Beta Kappa Christian Gauss Award Honorable Mention for the 2022 Robert K. Martin Book Prize from the Canadian Association for American Studies (CAAS) ASALH 2023 Book Prize Finalist Reveals how disability and disablement have shaped Black social life in America Through both law and custom, the color line has cast Black people as innately disabled and thus unfit for freedom, incapable of self-governance, and contagious within the national body politic. Disabilities of the Color Line maintains that the Black literary tradition historically has inverted this casting by exposing the disablement of racism without disclaiming disability. In place of a triumphalist narrative of overcoming where both disability and disablement alike are shunned, Dennis Tyler argues that Black authors and activists have consistently avowed what he calls the disabilities of the color line: the historical and ongoing anti-Black systems of division that maim, immobilize, and stigmatize Black people. In doing so, Tyler reveals how Black writers and activists such as David Walker, Henry Box Brown, William and Ellen Craft, Charles Chesnutt, James Weldon Johnson, and Mamie Till-Mobley have engaged in a politics and aesthetics of redress: modes of resistance that, in the pursuit of racial and disability justice, acknowledged the disabling violence perpetrated by anti-Black regimes in order to conceive or engender dynamic new worlds that account for people of all abilities. While some writers have affirmed disability to capture how their bodies, minds, and health have been made vulnerable to harm and impairment by the state and its citizens, others’ assertion of disability symbolizes a sense of community as well as a willingness to imagine and create a world distinct from the dominant social order.

sandy charles: Poverty Row Studios, 1929-1940 Michael R. Pitts, 2005-08-08 From the beginning of the sound era until the end of the 1930s, independent movie-making thrived. Many of the independent studios were headquartered in a section of Hollywood called Poverty Row. Here the independents made movies on the cheap, usually at rented facilities where shooting was limited to only a few days. From Allied Pictures Corporation to Willis Kent Production, 55 Poverty Row Studios are given histories in this book. Some of the studios, such as Diversion Pictures and Cresent Pictures, came into existence for the sole purpose of releasing movies by established stars. Others, for example J.D. Kendis, were early exploitation filmmakers under the guise of sex education. The histories include critical commentary on the studio's output and a filmography of all titles released from 1929 through 1940.
