Im Jahr 1997 stößt hier bei Abbrucharbeiten ein Arbeiter in der Decke eines Badezimmers auf ein Bündel versteckter Briefe. Es handelt sich um insgesamt 86 Postkarten und Briefe, die der damals 18 Jahre alte Philip Slier 1942 aus dem deutschen Zwangsarbeiterlager Molengoot an seine Eltern geschrieben hat. Die anrührenden Zeugnisse eines großen Unrechts, die bedrückenden Spuren eines gestohlenen Lebens.Philip Slier, geboren 1923 in Amsterdam, war siebzehn Jahre alt,als die Deutschen die Niederlande überfielen. Im Frühjahr 1942 wurde er in ein von den Deutschen eingerichtetes Arbeitslager gebracht. Von dort aus schrieb er fast täglich an seine Familie und Freunde. Sind diese Briefe zu Beginn noch voller Zuversicht und Naivität, was die wahren Motive der Internierung anbelangt, so sickert das Begreifen der Wahrheit doch nach und nach durch. Philips letzte Nachricht stammt vom 14. September 1942. Kurz darauf gelingt ihm die Flucht. Doch bei seinem Versuch, in die Schweiz zu entkommen, wird er im März 1943 verhaftet. Er stirbt in einem polnischen Vernichtungslager. Gemeinsam mit ihrem Mann Ian Shine hat die in New York lebende Deborah Slier die Briefe ihres Cousins Philip sorgfältig kommentiert und mit einer Fülle von dokumentarischem Material ergänzt.AUTORENPORTRÄTDeborah Slier, wurde 1932 in Südafrika geboren und siedelte später in die USA über. 1968 er- öffnete sie in Lexington, Kentucky einen Kinderbuchladen und arbeitete als Lektorin für Penguin Books, Random House und Macmillan.1994 gründete sie den Kinderbuch-verlag Star Bright Books. Deborah Slier lebt in New York. Ian Shine, 1933 in England geboren, ist Arzt und Buchautor. Nach seinem Studium in Cambridge war er lange Jahre in der medizinischen Forschung tätig.
