scope of industrial economics: Applied Industrial Economics Louis Phlips, 1998-09-24 This reader provides a unique mix of American and European contributions to the study of particular markets, often combined with a critical evaluation of antitrust regulations, decisions or judgments. Part I explains market structure as a function of sunk costs and market size. Part II illustrates the central role of pricing schemes (including parallel pricing, delivered pricing and competition clauses) in sustaining equilibrium outcomes in oligopolistic markets. Parts III and IV give a game-theoretic foundation to competition policy and merger control. Louis Phlips offers a comprehensive introduction to the text in which he very carefully explains the reasoning behind his choice of papers, and provides a superb synthesis of the material. Particular highlights include the discussion and evaluation of antitrust regulations, which involve a systematic comparative analysis of European and American regulations, decisions and judgments in this area. |
scope of industrial economics: Industrial Economics Prof. Dr. Wan Sulaiman Bin Wan Yusoff, 2014 Monopoly is one of the topics under market structure in microeconomic theory. Comparatively, based on conventional economics, monopoly is the third best solution in economics because under its operational theories it can create Dead Weight Loss (DWL) to the society in term of increasing price and reduce quantity of product in order to increase monopoly profit and reduce the consumer surplus. However in my book of Industrial Economics: Monopoly in Islamic Perspective shown that monopoly power under control of Islamic man it will create more social benefit rather DWL. For example ZAM-ZAM water in Mecca Saudi Arabia is a natural monopoly the only one in the world, but King of Saudi Arabia he is an Islamic Man in this regard he can freely supply ZAM-ZAM water to the people all over the world. Nonetheless, if he is an economic man (Characters of selfish and opportunist and main motive of profit maximization) he can put the price of the only natural monopoly to the people based on his own greediness and monopoly power. To see the Islamic Ethic, Morality and Altruism as well as characters of Islamic Man, under monopoly power, although he/she is a monopolist it still could give benefit to society at large. In this regard, please refer to the above book for your additional knowledge in the field of discipline. |

scope of industrial economics: The New Industrial Policy of the European Union Adam A. Ambroziak, 2016-10-08 The main objective of this book has been to carry out research into the definition of industrial policy and its goals; to evaluate previously-introduced policies and instruments; and to identify the future challenges for and features of a modern EU industrial policy. A modern industrial policy is seen as a non-traditional policy towards the industrial sector, based not necessarily on only the elimination of market failures (within the sectoral and/or horizontal approaches), but rather on the expanding the scope of industrial economic activities within the framework of both the pre- and post-fabrication stages. The book targets three market segments: academics; policy and decision-makers at the EU, national and regional level, as well as business practitioners. It includes a wide-ranging analysis of different spheres of industrial policies conducted within the European Union, making it of interest to an international audience. Each chapter also offers detailed and valuable comments, as well as conclusions that can be generally applied, ensuring the book’s universality. The book presents the results of a research project conducted in the Collegium of World Economy at the Warsaw School of Economics. |

scope of industrial economics: Postindustrial Possibilities Fred L. Block, 1990-05-01 While it is often acknowledged that we live in a postindustrial age, our economic concepts have lagged far behind our postmodern sensibility. In this incisive new work, the well-known sociologist, Fred Block, sheds obsolete and shopworn economic analysis by presenting a bold, sweeping reconceptualization of the economy. Postindustrial Possibilities provides a fresh understanding of the dynamics of postindustrial change while offering a roadmap for future economic thinking. Block takes as his point of departure the tired concepts of neo-classical economics which, while still dominant, fall short as tools for comprehending contemporary economic forces. In Block's mind, the failure to revise the concepts of industrial economics means that the reality of today's economy is increasingly understood as through a glass darkly. Intent on reinvigorating thinking in this area, Block masterfully critiques the central categories of neo-classical economics, such as the market, labor, and capital. Block argues that the neo-classical tradition has obscured the fact that capitalist prosperity has been built not on free markets but rather on systematic constraints on market freedom. He further suggests that measurements of capital have become increasingly problematic and that the concept obscures the critical sources of productivity within organizations. In his far-reaching analysis of the Gross National Product, Block shows that there is a growing divergence between the factors that determine people's well-being and trends in measured GNP. Postindustrial Possibilities sets forth a new intellectual paradigm that might be called Qualitative Growth. One of its primary foci is a shift toward improved product quality and greater priority for various non-commodity satisfactions such as leisure, interesting work, economic security and a safe and clean environment. It also promotes a recognition that greater economic efficiency rests not on infusions of capital but on cooperative labor relations and on institutional reform. Wide-ranging, intellectually vibrant and lucid, Postindustrial Possibilities will engender controversy and debate. It is an enormous contribution that social scientists and policymakers will need to come to terms with. |

Presenting a case study on the Jilin Section of the Songhua River, the book applies the overlay index method to assess the shallow groundwater pollution risk and identify high-risk areas and major pollution sources in an effort to identify the mechanism of interaction between industrial structures and groundwater pollution. Further, it proposes concrete measures for preventing and controlling groundwater pollution from an industrial economics perspective. As such, the book offers a valuable resource for all graduate students, lecturers and researchers who are interested in learning about resources and environmental economics. |

scope of industrial economics: The Economics of Firm Productivity Carlo Altomonte, Filippo di Mauro, 2022-04-21 Productivity varies widely between industries and countries, but even more so across individual firms within the same sectors. The challenge for governments is to strike the right balance between policies designed to increase overall productivity and policies designed to promote the reallocation of resources towards firms that could use them more effectively. The aim of this book is to provide the empirical evidence necessary in order to strike this policy balance. The authors do so by using a micro-aggregated dataset for 20 EU economies produced by CompNet, the Competitiveness Research Network, established some 10 years ago among major European institutions and a number of EU productivity boards, National Central Banks, National Statistical institutes, as well as academic Institutions. They call for pan-EU initiatives involving statistical offices and scholars to achieve a truly complete EU market for firm-level information on which to build solidly founded economic policies. |
scope of industrial economics: Marshall, Marshallians and Industrial Economics Tiziano Raffaelli, Tamotsu Nishizawa, Simon Cook, 2011-03-28 The four sections of the book deal in succession with Marshall’s key ideas on the subject, the wider context of his thought in which they are to be read, their later development by some of his pupils, and their revival in contemporary economics. The first and last sections work together to illustrate the evolutionary focus of Marshall’s research program and to identify its affinity with modern industrial economics; the second explicates the social assumptions within which the Marshallian paradigm was embedded, in particular those relating to the various relationships that exist between individuals and wider groups; while the third traces the development of Marshall’s views by some of his pupils. |

scope of industrial economics: MEZZOECONOMICS Chen Yunxian, Gu Wenjing, 2018-05-15 This monograph consists of six major parts, elaborating on basic aspects of mezzoeconomics, the theory of regional government foresighted leading, the dual-role theory of regional government, the dual-entity theory of regional government, the double-strong mechanism theory and the theoretical configuration of mezzoeconomics as well as the prospects for its development. It gives a full exposition of the core issues, approaches and methodological principles of mezzoeconomic researches, their breakthrough improvements upon traditional economic theorization and the broad prospects for innovative practices. This monograph fills up a blank in the theoretical system of modern economics and signifies a substantial amelioration of the theorization of modern market economy. It demonstrates through forceful exemplification and argumentation that there exists in between microeconomics represented by the enterprise and macroeconomics represented by the state mezzoeconomics represented by regional government in the system of modern economics and that both enterprises and regional governments are entities of market competition in the modern market theory, which remedies the theoretical defects in traditional economic and market theories and redefines the theories of modern economics and modern market economy. |
scope of industrial economics: The Case for Industrial Policy Howard Pack, Kamal Saggi, 2006 What are the underlying rationales for industrial policy? Does empirical evidence support the use of industrial policy for correcting market failures that plague the process of industrialization? To address these questions, the authors provide a critical survey of the analytical literature on industrial policy. They also review some recent industry successes and argue that only a limited role was played by public interventions. Moreover, the recent ascendance of international industrial networks, which dominate the sectors in which less developed countries have in the past had considerable success, implies a further limitation on the potential role of industrial policies as traditionally understood. Overall, there appears to be little empirical support for an activist government policy even though market failures exist that can, in principle, justify the use of industrial policy. |

scope of industrial economics: Technology, Innovation and Industrial Economics: Institutionalist Perspectives Dilmus D. James, John W. Mogab, 2012-12-06 Technology, Innovation and Industrial Economics: Institutional Perspectives, inspired by the work of William E. Cole, Professor Emeritus at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, extends his work with essays on technology, innovation and industrial economics from an Institutionalist perspective. The managerial style, innovational practices and industrial setting of the continuous improvement firm are central to several chapters. This volume also features innovation and technology in Latin America, Adam Smith's writing on entrepreneurship and a comparison of American and European Institutionalism. The topics of technology, innovation, industrial organization and industrial policy are being widely discussed and debated in today's literature, but seldom from an Institutionalist perspective. The purpose of this book is to reduce substantially this missing dimension in the ongoing debates on these important issues. |
