We ate three good meals every day and slept in a comfortable bed at night. My parents loved me and taught me a code of conduct that I still strive to live by. I was taught; don't lie, cheat, say ugly words or talk bad about your neighbors. Go to Sunday school on Sunday and stay for church. Say yes sir and no sir to your elders and do not talk with food in your mouth. I was also taught to look people in the eye when talking to them. Daddy said that people with shifty eyes were not trustworthy. When I was assigned to the White House Communications Agency as a Staff Officer during my military career, my upbringing became a source of strength that saw me though some demanding situations. I learned at a very early age that God loved me. When I became a Christian at the age of fifteen, Jesus made sure my very own angel was there to lift me out of numerous deep holes I dug for myself. This book is memories of growing up in the mid forties and fifties and my twenty-three years in the U. S Army. These were challenging times for America and I consider myself fortunate to have lived through the period. World War II was over and millions of military men and women were returning home to pick back up their lives with the same energy and determination that won the war. The world today has changed dramatically from the world I grew up in. We have improved our standard of living with technologic advancements we only dreamed about. However, the world appears to have lost its ethical compass and is digressing back to the moral decay of the Roman Empire period of time. My prayer is that America will once again find its bearing and be a principled compass for the world to follow. |

Perry, 2005-10-18 In 1905 Lawrence Peter Hollis went to Springfield, Massachusetts, before beginning his job as the secretary of the YMCA at Monaghan Mill in Greenville, South Carolina. While there, he met James Naismith, the inventor of basketball, and learned of the fledgling game. Armed with Dr. Naismith's rules of the game and a basketball he bought in New York, Hollis returned to the mill and changed the face of athletics in South Carolina. Lawrence Peter Hollis was one of the first to introduce basketball south of the Mason-Dixon line, and the game quickly gained popularity in the textile mill villages throughout South Carolina. In 1921 Hollis and others organized a tournament to determine the best mill team, and thus the southern Textile Basketball Tournament was born. Over the years, some of the south's top cage talent played in the tourney, including Smokey Barbare, Lucille Foster Thomas, Bert Hill, Earl Wooten, Billy Cunningham, Pete Maravich, Sue Vickers and Tree Rollins. Decade-by-decade, the history of one of the longest running basketball tournaments is provided, along with profiles of many prominent participants. | savannah holiday classic basketball tournament: Pembroke 1905-2005 The Pembroke Centennial Committee, 2005 A location between Savannah and Statesboro encouraged the town of Pembroke to grow into a hub of commercial activity. Timber and turpentine from the Georgia pine forests, as well as cotton, were the main commercial activities of the early town. The city of Pembroke began as a result of the extension of the Savannah and Western Railroad through the upper part of Bryan County in 1889. The town's first resident was M.E. Carter, a member of the railroad construction crew, who lived in a box car that was switched off at a siding; Carter would later serve as mayor of Pembroke. By the late 1890s, substantial permanent buildings were being constructed, and by 1900, Pembroke was the commercial center of Bryan County. It was incorporated as a city in 1905, and the next 20 years saw Pembroke develop into a prosperous town, with the formation of the first bank in Bryan County, a school, and many businesses. |

One of the most successful high school athletes in Nebraska’s history, he’s also a South Sudanese refugee. At age four, Akoy and his family fled Sudan during the Second Sudanese Civil War, and after three years in Cairo, they came to Maryland as refugees. They arrived in Omaha in 2003 in search of a better future. In Omaha the Agaus joined the largest South Sudanese resettlement population in the United States. While federal resources and local organizations help refugees with housing, health care, and job placement, the challenge to assimilate culturally was particularly steep.
