The present investigation focuses on developing a method to translate subjective assessment practices for calibration into measureable objective metrics. Knock during hot engine starts is selected for detailed demonstration of the method, however the method was also applied to additional aspects of hot engine starts. In practice, the subjective requirements for this set of aspects is used to tune a calibration table referenced to mitigate hot engine start knock. A full factorial experiment was performed with respect to the calibration table. The recorded data was evaluated using the scoring method and compared to a manually tuned calibration with satisfactory results.
