sant jarnail singh bhindranwale history: The Sikhs of the Punjab Joyce Pettigrew, 1995-04-27 Joyce Pettigrew, Reader in Anthropology at Queen's University in Belfast, made three trips to the Punjab in the early 1990s to examine Sikh resistance to the Indian state. Her book sympathetically portrays the Sikh struggle for an independent homeland, revealing the efforts of ordinary people to keep themselves alive and to retain dignity in the years 1984-1992 when Sikh guerrillas and Indian government forces were engaged in a fierce battle for the control of the Punjab. The struggle unfolded against a background of small farmers facing ruin through central government control of resources and prices, disaffection for the state when employment opportunities for Sikhs in the army were reduced, reaction to the invasion of the Golden Temple and massacres of 1984 and police terror tactics in rural villages, which took an especially heavy toll on young men. The first part of the book describes life conditions in rural areas during the insurgency and the second part consists of interviews with Sikh guerrillas. In her concluding remarks, Pettigrew discusses the decline of the Sikh struggle and links this both to the fact that Sikhism does not in itself contain a blueprint for a system of government and to the traditional instability of allegiances in the rural parts of the Punjab. |
