repaper download: Argument, Inference and Dialectic R.C. Pinto, 2013-03-14 Chapters 1-12 of this volume contain the papers on infonnal logic and argumentation that I've published and/or read at conferences over the last 17 years. These papers are reproduced here pretty much unchanged from their first appearance; it is my intention that their appearance here constitute a record of my positions and arguments at the time of their original publication or delivery. I've made minor changes in fonnat, in the style of references, etc., for the sake of consistency; I've also corrected typographical errors and the like. The only extensive changes in wording occur in the last few pages of Chapter 7, and were made only to enable the reader to see more clearly what I was getting at in my first attempt to write about the notion of coherence. Chapter 13 was written expressly for this volume. It looks retrospectively at the contents of the first 12 chapters and attempts to highlight the unifying themes that run through them. It also revisits the ideas about dialectic that occupied my first in light of later developments in my thinking but also re paper, reworking them emphasizing themes about which I've tended to remain silent in the last few years. |

repaper download: Katia graf Leo Tolstoy, 1887 WE were in mourning for our mother, who had died the preceding autumn, and we had spent all the winter alone in the country-Macha, Sonia and I. Macha was an old family friend, who had been our governess and had brought us all up, and my memories of her, like my love for her, went as far back as my memories of myself. Sonia was my younger sister. The winter had dragged by, sad and sombre, in our old country-house of Pokrovski. The weather had been cold, and so windy that the snow was often piled high above our windows; the panes were almost always cloudy with a coating of ice; and throughout the whole season we were shut in, rarely finding it possible to go out of the house. It was very seldom that any one came to see us, and our few visitors brought neither joy nor cheerfulness to our house. They all had mournful faces, spoke low, as if they were afraid of waking some one, were careful not to laugh, sighed and often shed tears when they looked at me, and above all at the sight of my poor Sonia in her little black frock. |
repaper download: The Yellow Wallpaper Illustrated Charlotte Perkins Gilman, 2021-04-13 The Yellow Wallpaper is a short story by American writer Charlotte Perkins Gilman, first published in January 1892 in The New England Magazine.[1] It is regarded as an important early work of American feminist literature, due to its illustration of the attitudes towards mental and physical health of women in the 19th century.Narrated in the first person, the story is a collection of journal entries written by a woman whose physician husband (John) has rented an old mansion for the summer. Forgoing other rooms in the house, the couple moves into the upstairs nursery. As a form of treatment, the unnamed woman is forbidden from working, and is encouraged to eat well and get plenty of air, so she can recuperate from what he calls a temporary nervous depression - a slight hysterical tendency, a diagnosis common to women during that period |

repaper download: The Yellow Wall-Paper Charlotte Perkins Gilman, 2024 She has just given birth to their child. He labels her postpartum depression as »hysteria.« He rents the attic in an old country house. Here, she is to rest alone – forbidden to leave her room. Instead of improving, she starts hallucinating, imagining herself crawling with other women behind the room's yellow wallpaper. And secretly, she records her experiences. The Yellow Wall-Paper [1892] is the short but intense, Gothic horror story, written as a diary, about a woman in an attic – imprisoned in her gender; by the story. Charlotte Perkins Gilman's feminist novella was long overlooked in American literary history. Nowadays, it is counted among the classics. CHARLOTTE PERKINS GILMAN (1860–1935), born in Hartford, Connecticut, was an American feminist theorist, sociologist, novelist, short story writer, poet, and playwright. Her writings are precursors to many later feminist theories. With her radical life attitude, Perkins Gilman has been an inspiration for many generations of feminists in the USA. Her most famous work is the short story The Yellow Wall-Paper [1892], written when she suffered from postpartum psychosis. |

repaper download: Genetics and Molecular Biology Robert F. Schleif, 1993 In the first edition of Genetics and Molecular Biology, renowned researcher and award-winning teacher Robert Schleif produced a unique and stimulating text that was a notable departure from the standard compendia of facts and observations. Schleif's strategy was to present the underlying fundamental concepts of molecular biology with clear explanations and critical analysis of well-chosen experiments. The result was a concise and practical approach that offered students a real understanding of the subject. This second edition retains that valuable approach--with material thoroughly updated to include an integrated treatment of prokaryotic and eukaryotic molecular biology. Genetics and Molecular Biology is copiously illustrated with two-color line art. Each chapter includes an extensive list of important references to the primary literature, as well as many innovative and thought-provoking problems on material covered in the text or on related topics. These help focus the student's attention of a variety of critical issues. Solutions are provided for half of the problems. Praise for the first edition: Schleif's Genetics and Molecular Biology... is a remarkable achievement. It is an advanced text, derived from material taught largely to postgraduates, and will probably be thought best suited to budding professionals in molecular genetics. In some ways this would be a pity, because there is also gold here for the rest of us... The lessons here in dealing with the information explosion in biology are that an ounce of rationale is worth a pound of facts and that, for educational value, there is nothing to beat an author writing about stuff he knows from theinside.--Nature. Schleif presents a quantitative, chemically rigorous approach to analyzing problems in molecular biology. The text is unique and clearly superior to any currently available.--R.L. Bernstein, San Francisco State University. The greatest strength is the author's ability to challenge the student to become involved and get below the surface.--Clifford Brunk, UCLA |

repaper download: Boy @ the Window Donald Earl Collins, 2013-11 As a preteen Black male growing up in Mount Vernon, New York, there were a series of moments, incidents and wounds that caused me to retreat inward in despair and escape into a world of imagination. For five years I protected my family secrets from authority figures, affluent Whites and middle class Blacks while attending an unforgiving gifted-track magnet school program that itself was embroiled in suburban drama. It was my imagination that shielded me from the slights of others, that enabled my survival and academic success. It took everything I had to get myself into college and out to Pittsburgh, but more was in store before I could finally begin to break from my past. Boy @ The Window is a coming-of-age story about the universal search for understanding on how any one of us becomes the person they are despite-or because of-the odds. It's a memoir intertwined with my own search for redemption, trust, love, success-for a life worth living. Boy @ The Window is about one of the most important lessons of all: what it takes to overcome inhumanity in order to become whole and human again. |

repaper download: The Yellow Wallpaper Illustrated Charlotte Perkins Gilman, 2020-11-16 The Yellow Wallpaper is a short story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, published 1892 in The New England Magazine.[1] It is regarded as an important early work of American feminist literature for its illustration of the attitudes towards mental and physical health of women in the 19th century.Narrated in the first person, the story is a collection of journal entries written by a woman whose physician husband (John) has rented an old mansion for the summer. Forgoing other rooms in the house, the couple moves into the upstairs nursery. As a form of treatment, the unnamed woman is forbidden from working or writing, and is encouraged to eat well and get plenty of air, so she can recuperate from what he calls a temporary nervous depression - a slight hysterical tendency, a diagnosis common to women during that period.[2][3][4]The narrator devotes many journal entries to describing the wallpaper in the room - its sickly color, its yellow smell, its bizarre and disturbing pattern like an interminable string of toadstools, budding and sprouting in endless convolutions, its missing patches, and the way it leaves yellow smears on the skin and clothing of anyone who touches it. She describes how the longer one stays in the bedroom, the more the wallpaper appears to mutate, especially in the moonlight. With no stimulus other than the wallpaper, the pattern and designs become increasingly intriguing to the narrator. She soon begins to see a figure in the design and eventually comes to believe that a woman is creeping on all fours behind the pattern. Believing she must free the woman in the wallpaper, the woman begins to strip the remaining paper off the wall. When her husband arrives home, the narrator refuses to unlock her door. When he returns with the key, he finds her creeping around the room, rubbing against the wallpaper, and exclaiming I've got out at last... in spite of you. He faints, but she continues to circle the room, creeping over his inert body each time she passes it, believing herself to have become the woman trapped behind the yellow wallpaper. |
repaper download: Laugh With Leacock Stephen Butler Leacock, 2022-08-16 In 'Laugh With Leacock,' Stephen Butler Leacock presents a delightful compendium of wit that has transcended the boundaries of time and literary tradition. Through a series of whimsical essays and short stories, Leacock masterfully employs satire and humor to shed light on the absurdities of human nature and society. The book showcases Leacock's quintessential literary style—a combination of dry wit and light-hearted storytelling that firmly embeds him within the satirical tradition of Mark Twain and contemporaries such as P.G. Wodehouse. This DigiCat Publishing edition honors the integrity of his work, ensuring that the sparkle of Leacock's humor is preserved in its transition to modern formats, both in print and in digital forms. With his sharp observational skills and a keen eye for the comic, Stephen Butler Leacock (1869-1944) was arguably one of the most significant humorists of his time. He was a political economist by training, a lecturer by profession, and a writer by passion. Hailing from Canada, Leacock's academic background and his experiences in the early 20th century contribute heavily to the societal critiques found within his humor. In 'Laugh With Leacock,' he encapsulates the idiosyncrasies of life that are as relevant today as they were in his era—perhaps a result of his academic expertise juxtaposed with his lighthearted approach to storytelling. This trove of laughter penned by an esteemed member of Canada's literary pantheon is recommended for readers who revel in insightful humor and value the preservation of classic literature. 'Laugh With Leacock' speaks to those who appreciate the intertwining of comedy with keen societal observations and historical context. It is an essential read for devotees of satire and anyone looking to immerse themselves in timeless, joyous prose, bearing witness to the enduring legacy of Stephen Butler Leacock's wit. |

The last battle between gods and mortals is looming; before it does, certain answers must come to light. Just who is the Creeping Sword? Will Shaa free himself from the curse his brother inflicted upon him? And most important of all, who will be left standing? The Dance of Gods concludes in a fast-paced final movement. “This is a charming, lighthearted fantasy. The gods are so klutzy and the magic is so ill-fated that the reader smiles through dungeons, fire and death . . . The action is non-stop and always exciting. The final fight is a doozy . . . An amusing climax in which all story lines from the earlier volumes come to a conclusion.” —Voya “Zany, entertaining reading for anyone who enjoyed the first three books of the Dance of Gods series.” —Kliatt “Wild and woolly adventure abounding with inept sorcery, strange gods and downright funny fantasy.” —Rave Reviews Book Club |
