ralph coppola genovese: Mafia Takedown Mike Campi, 2024-11-19 The true story of FBI agent Mike Campi who led some of the most relentless and successful attacks on organized crime in American history. A unique and unexpected set of circumstances caused former FBI agent Mike Campi to finally step forward and reveal himself. The result is this tour de force, which details his years operating deeply in the trenches to devastate the mafia. You will learn how he took down a staggering array of mob bosses, underbosses, consiglieri, capos, soldiers, and other legends from all five New York crime families. He takes you inside his investigative, critical, make-or-break moments, which he navigated to achieve astonishing success. Along the way, he provides you with insight into the external and internal forces often working to undermine him. And he lifts the curtain to reveal the untold treachery and hypocrisy underlying the real American mafia, as illustrated by the words of one crime boss who was recorded by Mike describing his underlings: “They’re suckers—we just use them.” Mafia Takedown, to be released on the anniversary of the infamous November 14, 1957, Apalachin meeting of top mafia leaders from the US and Italy, is chock-filled with an array of stunning facts and truths. A sample includes: the Catholic priest who fled America to save his life from the mob; mafia members recorded describing in their own words their innermost secrets; how Mike and federal prosecutors obtained the boss of all bosses Vincent “the Chin” Gigante’s courthouse confession that his legendary crazy act was a fraud all along; what the Chin said when America was attacked on September 11, 2001; and the explosive, dark secret that almost undermined one of the most important undercover operations in the history of law enforcement. You’ll learn so much more: such as how and why the most important undercover mafioso in history wanted to work with Mike, and only with Mike; and how the Chin was only months away from escaping justice entirely. For fans of organized crime, of true crime, or simply of engaging and enjoyable stories—this book is an absolute must read. |

Jacobs presents the first comprehensive account of the ways in which the Cosa Nostra infiltrated key sectors of New York City's legitimate economic life and how this involvement came over the years to be accepted as inevitable, in some cases even beneficial. ralph coppola genovese: The Treacherous World of Joseph Valachi Thomas Hunt, Steve Turner, Fabien Rossat, Jon Black, Thibaut Maïquès, J. Michael Niotta PhD, Thom L. Jones, Patrick Downey, Ellen Poulsen, 2024-10-31 Joseph Valachi was a special figure in the history of American crime. Noteworthy as a rare primary source into Mafia events of the Castellammarese War-era (1930-1931), Valachi's documented memories also provide a window into the early gangland of East Harlem, Manhattan and the Bronx. Through his recollections, historians gain a unique soldier-level view of New York-area organized crime families between Prohibition and the Mafia convention at Apalachin, New York. As an early Mafia turncoat and a celebrated informant for J. Edgar Hoover's FBI, Valachi became the focus of a best-selling book, a popular motion picture, many hours of televised Senate testimony and a detailed but never published autobiography (The Real Thing) of more than a thousand pages. Despite all that attention, a great deal of the true Valachi story has remained untold for decades. And some of the information provided by Valachi and repeated through many years has been inaccurate. Much of his life and many of his associates have been largely ignored by crime historians. Neglected subjects have included the impact of Valachi on the FBI, the government stresses related to the Kennedy Justice Department's desire to publicize the Valachi story and the painful birthing of The Valachi Papers in book and movie forms. Now, sixty years after Valachi put pen to paper to compose his memoirs, a team of historians has assembled a collection of carefully researched articles in an effort to correct Valachi's flawed recollections, to reveal long hidden aspects of his life and to identify and flesh out the individuals who influenced him. This Informer issue features standalone articles on various phases of Valachi's existence in and out of the Mafia society he called cosa nostra. It includes dozens of separate biographies of Valachi contacts on both sides of the law, and background information on his time and place. The issue is illustrated with photos, documents and maps. In addition to this EPUB ebook format, the issue is available in Kindle ebook, hardcover, paperback, magazine and emagazine formats. Contributors to the issue: Thomas Hunt (U.S.), Steve Turner (U.K.), Fabien Rossat (France), Jon Black (U.K.), Thibaut Maïquès (France), J. Michael Niotta PhD (U.S.), Thom L. Jones (New Zealand), Patrick Downey (U.S.), Ellen Poulsen (U.S.), Justin Cascio (U.S.), Scott Deitche (U.S.). |
ralph coppola genovese: New Jersey Mob Bob Buccino, 2016-09-06 New Jersey Mob: Memories of a Top Cop By Bob Buccino Bob Buccino worked in law enforcement for fifty-one years; twenty-four of which were spent investigating organized crime. He is a superior court recognized expert on the Cosa Nostra. He tells his story in three parts: The first is about growing up in Orange, New Jersey, where he was a wannabe admiring the local mob guys. He was a street tough, extorting money from his classmates, running his own bookmaking operation, and wanting to be a mob guy. In 1957, drugs hit the streets of Orange and several friends of Buccino died from Heroin overdoses. Buccino married his childhood sweetheart and they had a baby boy. He came to his senses about the mob and broke away from it. He became a working stiff, not getting anywhere with his life. One day, he saw an article in the newspaper announcing testing for state troopers. He took the test, passed, and became a trooper, changing his life forever. The second part of his book is about his often very humorous uniform days as a state trooper. During this time, Anthony “Tumac” Acceturo, a young tough that Buccino grew up with, was beginning his career in the Cosa Nostra. He and Buccino were running parallel lives. When Buccino got transferred off of the uniform division and began his career investigating the Cosa Nostra, Anthony was working for the mob. In the third part of his book, Buccino writes about his success in dismantling the mob in New Jersey, telling about the many arrests and convictions of its mob bosses, including the prosecutions of the high ranking bosses of the Gambino, Lucchese, Bruno, DeCavalcante, and Genovese crime families. He also writes of the arrest and conviction of his childhood friend Anthony “Tumac” Acceturo while he was the deputy chief in the Division of Criminal Justice in charge of the New Jersey Statewide Organized Crime Task Force. |

ralph coppola genovese: The Strength of the Wolf Douglas Valentine, 2013-10-01 Voted Outstanding Academic Title in 2004 by Choice. The Strength of the Wolf is the first complete history of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics (FBN), which existed from 1930 until its wrenching termination in 1968. The most successful federal law enforcement agency ever, the FBN was populated by some of the most amazing characters in American history, many of whom the author interviewed for this book. Working as undercover agents and with mercenary informers around the globe, these freewheeling “case-making” agents penetrated the Mafia and the French connection, breaking all the rules in the process, and uncovering the Establishment’s ties to organized crime. Targeted by the FBI and the CIA, the case-makers were, ironically, victims of their own fabulous success in hunting down society’s predators. An incredible, never-before-told story, The Strength of the Wolf provides a new, exciting, and revealing look at an important chapter in American history. From the Trade Paperback edition. |

Boone, Michael Cadden, 2012-08-21 Over the past several years, the question of men’s relation to feminism has become a fiercely and sometimes bitterly debated subject. Engendering Men demonstrates the creative impact that feminist modes of inquiry have already had on a new generation of male critics. In the wake of feminism, many men have found it imperative to begin the task of retheorizing the male position in our culture. This collection of new essays brings together seventeen male critics whose work – on poetry, fiction, the Broadway stage, film and television, and broader cultural and psychoanalytic texts – is opening up new avenues in criticism, as well as in gender and feminist theory. |

ralph coppola genovese: Dante, Cinema, and Television Amilcare A. Iannucci, 2004-01-01 The Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) is one of the seminal works of western literature. Its impact on modern culture has been enormous, nourishing a plethora of twentieth century authors from Joyce and Borges to Kenzaburo Oe. Although Dante's influence in the literary sphere is well documented, very little has been written on his equally determining role in the evolution of the visual media unique to our times, namely, cinema and television. Dante, Cinema, and Television corrects this oversight. The essays, from a broad range of disciplines, cover the influence of the Divine Comedy from cinema's silent era on through to the era of sound and the advent of television, as well as its impact on specific directors, actors, and episodes, on national/regional cinema and television, and on genres. They also consider the different modes of appropriation by cinema and television. Dante, Cinema, and Television demonstrates the many subtle ways in which Dante's Divine Comedy has been given 'new life' by cinema and television, and underscores the tremendous extent of Dante's staying power in the modern world. |
ralph coppola genovese: The Mafia and the Allies Ezio Costanzo, 2007-09-01 Within weeks of the Pearl Harbor attack and the declaration of war on the United States by Germany and Italy, US war plans included the defense of the East Coast and the invasion of Sicily. Here, Ezio Costanzo examines the many elements of this secret scenario, which included long-suppressed information about cooperation between the Mafia and the US Army. The results came in the aftermath of the invasion, during the new military government that gave many Mafia leaders important administrative positions. Seen from an Italian standpoint, the success of US forces is examined in detail and many questions are finally answered. |
ralph coppola genovese: The Philosophy of Martin Scorsese Mark Conard, 2007-05-31 Academy Award–winning director Martin Scorsese is one of the most significant American filmmakers in the history of cinema. Although best known for his movies about gangsters and violence, such as Mean Streets, Goodfellas, Casino, and Taxi Driver, Scorsese has addressed a much wider range of themes and topics in the four decades of his career. In The Philosophy of Martin Scorsese, an impressive cast of contributors explores the complex themes and philosophical underpinnings of Martin Scorsese’s films. The essays concerning Scorsese’s films about crime and violence investigate the nature of friendship, the ethics of vigilantism, and the nature of unhappiness. The authors delve deeply into the minds of Scorsese’s tortured characters and explore how the men and women he depicts grapple with moral codes and their emotions. Several of the essays explore specific themes in individual films. The authors describe how Scorsese addresses the nuances of social mores and values in The Age of Innocence, the nature of temptation and self-sacrifice in The Last Temptation of Christ and Bringing Out the Dead, and the complexities of innovation and ambition in The Aviator. Other chapters in the collection examine larger philosophical questions. In a world where everything can be interpreted as meaningful, Scorsese at times uses his films to teach audiences about the meaning in life beyond the everyday world depicted in the cinema. For example, his films touching on religious subjects, such as Kundun and The Last Temptation of Christ, allow the director to explore spiritualism and peaceful ways of responding to the chaos in the world.Filled with penetrating insights on Scorsese’s body of work, The Philosophy of Martin Scorsese shows the director engaging with many of the most basic questions about our humanity and how we relate to one another in a complex world. |
