roslyn karaban: Living Well and Dying Faithfully John Swinton, Richard Payne, 2009-11-10 Living Well and Dying Faithfully explores how Christian practices love, prayer, lament, compassion, and so on can contribute to the process of dying well. Working on the premise that one dies the way one lives, the book is unique in its constructive dialogue between theology and medicine as offering two complementary modes of care.
roslyn karaban: This Is My Body Ella L. Johnson, 2020-03-30 This book examines how the writings of the thirteenth-century nun Gertrude the Great of Helfta articulate an innovative relationship between a person's eucharistic devotion and her body. It attends to her references to the biblical, monastic, and theological traditions, including attitudes and ideas about the spiritual and corporeal senses, in order to illuminate the affirmative role Gertrude assigns to the body in making spiritual progress. Ultimately the book demonstrates that Gertrude leaves behind the dualistic aspect of the Christian intellectual and devotional tradition while exploiting its affirmative concepts of bodily forms of knowing divine union.

roslyn karaban: The Trauma of Sexual and Domestic Violence Sharon Ellis Davis, 2022-07-26 Recovering from the trauma of sexual and domestic violence is a process that can lead you to find your own strength. Shaped by a faith identity incongruent with her reality as a survivor of sexual and physical abuse, Ellis Davis became intimately familiar with domestic violence and the church's reluctance to intervene. Then, using marriages as a touchstone for self-discovery only led her into increasingly violent relationships. Even while navigating the process to wholeness as a woman police officer, Ellis Davis was not assured an expedient process through the courts nor protection from male police officers. Determined to define her worth for herself, Ellis Davis shares with liberating vulnerability decades of blessings and betrayals as she self-actualized from being a victim of domestic violence and sexual traumas to becoming victoriously accomplished and deeply content. This book provides hope for survivors, pastoral wisdom for seminarians, cultural sensitivity for service providers, and is useful as a guide for faith-based study groups.
roslyn karaban: Christian Theology in Practice Bonnie J. Miller-McLemore, 2012-02-02 For the past fifty years, scholars in both pastoral and practical theology have attempted to recapture human religious experience and practice as essential sites for theological engagement -- redefining in the process what theology is, how it is done, and who does it. In this book Bonnie J. Miller-McLemore shows how this trend in scholarship has led to an expanded subject matter, alternative ways of knowing, and richer terms for analysis in doing Christian theology. Tracing more than two decades of her own search for a more inclusive discipline -- one that truly grapples with theology in the midst of life -- Christian Theology in Practice shows not only where Miller-McLemore herself has traveled in the field but also how pastoral and practical theology has developed during this time. Looking forward, Miller-McLemore calls on the academy and Christian congregations to disrupt conventional theological boundaries and to acknowledge the multiplicity of shapes and places in which the wisdom of God appears..

roslyn karaban: Living Devotions Mary Clark Moschella, 2008-01-01 Living Devotions explores how a particular community has creatively negotiated its religious bonds of connection in the context of immigration. These matters cannot be studied in the abstract. Religious practice is not something separate from the economic, cultural, and psychological dimensions of life, but rather something integral, which shapes and is being shaped by all of these other realities. The author examines these dynamics through an ethnographic case study of the living devotions of a group of Italian Catholic immigrants to San Pedro, California. The narrative describes how the group's historical experiences of immigration and fishing find expression in their particular forms of prayer, art, artifacts, and food. The healing and transformative power of these shared religious practices is explored. As contemporary theologians, pastors, and congregations seek to welcome and care for immigrants and other strangers in a shifting social landscape, we need ways to engage in care-full and attentive relationships. The ethnographic method employed here suggests a way to lift up the voices of ordinary people, allowing them to tell their own stories, while piecing together emerging bits of theological wisdom and compelling care practices. While the particular insights of any community are situated and specific, theological reflection in one context can animate a broader discussion of transformative pastoral theology and practice.
roslyn karaban: The Practice of Pastoral Care Carrie Doehring, 2006-01-01 Drawing on psychological, theological, and cultural studies on suffering, Carrie Doehring encourages counselors to view their ministry through trifocal lenses and include approaches that are premodern (apprehending God through religious rituals), modern (consulting rational and empirical sources), and postmodern (acknowledging the contextual nature of knowledge). Utilizing strategies from all three perspectives, Doehring describes the basic ingredients of a caregiving relationship, shows how to use the caregiver's life experience as a source of authority, and demonstrates how to develop the skill of listening and establish the actual relationship. She then explains the steps of psychological assessment, systemic assessment, and theological reflection, and finally she delineates the basic steps for plans of care: attending to the careseeker's safety, building trust, mourning losses, and reconnecting with the ordinariness of life.

roslyn karaban: Doing More with Life Michael Robert Miller, 2007 Vocation is most often linked with a specific calling for those in professional ministry. Doing More with Life explores the way higher education can expand this limited understanding of vocation. Specifically, this volume shows that higher education can clarify how God calls all people, allow mentoring across specific vocations, and inspire future generations to think of their lives as vocations.
roslyn karaban: The Practice of Pastoral Care, Revised and Expanded Edition Carrie Doehring, 2015-01-12 The Practice of Pastoral Care has become a popular seminary textbook for courses in pastoral care and a manual for clinical pastoral education. In it, Doehring encourages counselors to view their ministry through a trifocal lens that incorporates premodern, modern, and postmodern approaches to religious and psychological knowledge. Doehring describes the basic ingredients of a caregiving relationship, shows how to use the caregiver's life experience as a source of authority, and demonstrates how to develop the skill of listening and establishing the actual relationship. This new edition elaborates on and expands the author's previous work, adding an intercultural perspective that gives more attention to religious pluralism in the pastoral care setting. It offers a road map for using a step-by-step narrative, relational, embodied approach to spiritual care that respects the unique ways people live out their values and beliefs, especially in coping with stress, loss, and violence. Readers will be able to confidently and professionally offer pastoral care and counseling to members of their congregations or other places of ministry.
roslyn karaban: Caring for Joy: Narrative, Theology, and Practice Mary Clark Moschella, 2016-09-07 In Caring for Joy: Narrative, Theology, and Practice Mary Clark Moschella offers a new account of the value of joy in caregiving vocations, demonstrating how the work of caring for persons, communities, and the world need not be a dreary endeavor overwhelmed by crises or undermined by despair. Moschella presents glimpses of joy-in-action in the narratives of five notable figures: Heidi Neumark, Henri Nouwen, Gregory Boyle, Pauli Murray, and Paul Farmer, gleaning their wisdom for the construction of a theology of joy that embodies compassion, connection, justice, and freedom. Care must be deep enough to hold human suffering and spacious enough to take in the divine goodness, beauty, and love. This book expands the pastoral theological imagination and narrates joy-full approaches to transformational care. “This work is a scholarly, engaging and compassionate call to reconsider the significance of joyful living and joyful lives in radical pastoral theology.” — Heather Walton, University of Glasgow, President of the International Academy of Practical Theology, July 2016. “Based on biographies, interviews, and life stories, Mary Clark Moschella presents joy as a counter-cultural emotion, as a spiritual path, and as a fruit of the Spirit. In her research, joy and reason are not ultimately opposed.” — Jeanne Stevenson-Moessner, Professor of Pastoral Care, Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University, July 2016. “This highly readable and compelling theology of joy will inspire you to explore how joy might energize your vocation, especially caregiving vocations that use narrative approaches to spiritual care and pastoral counseling. I plan on using this book as a textbook in my theodicy, grief, death and dying, and vocational courses.” — Carrie Doehring, Professor of Pastoral Care and Counseling, Iliff School of Theology, Denver, August 2016 “Mary Moschella has given us a rare text, one that is theologically rich, intellectually sophisticated, drenched in pastoral wisdom, and beautifully written. She gives us a pastoral theology attuned to the realities of diversity and sensitive to the complex challenges facing those who lives constantly interface with suffering. There is simply nothing else like this book in pastoral care.” — Willie James Jennings, Professor of Systematic Theology and Africana Studies, Yale University, August 2016

roslyn karaban: Bridging the Divide between Bible and Practical Theology Denise Dombkowski Hopkins, Michael S. Koppel, 2019-01-10 This volume contributes to closing the unfortunate divide that still exists today between the so-called ‘practical’ and ‘classical’ disciplines in seminary curricula. It builds a bridge across a chasm that should not exist. The chapters reflect ‘working on the bridge’ through a collegial model of sustained conversation out of the contributors’ different disciplines within Bible and Practical Theology. The authors in this volume desire to break out of academic silos that too often lead to fragmented student learning and disjointed ministry practices, in the hope that the imaginations of students, scholars, and ministers may be stimulated in the service of holistic ministry. The book is divided into two sections, I: Theoretical Frameworks, in which the authors invite the reader to look more broadly at issues of method, context, geography, and culture as biblical texts and practical theology are brought into dialog, and II: Reading Biblical Texts, which explores biblical books or texts while wearing the lenses of practical theology to mine the intersections and complexities of the encounter across disciplines. Whether singly or jointly authored, these essays model a dynamic, interactive reading of human situations and biblical texts in order to reveal their multivalent complexities.
roslyn karaban: Feminist and Womanist Pastoral Theology Bonnie J. Miller-McLemore, Brita L. Gill-Austern, 1999 In the last decade, the focus of pastoral theology has shifted dramatically from care defined as counseling to care understood within a wider social, political, and religious context. Feminist and womanist theory as well as feminist and womanist faith convictions have played a key role in this development. According to the authors, feminists and womanists in pastoral theology have begun to reconstruct the definitions, parameters, and commitments of pastoral care and counseling. These changes have critical implications for care within congregations and for the understanding of theology in seminaries and divinity schools. Yet these developments in the theory and practice of pastoral theology and their broader ramifications have not been carefully analyzed or even acknowledged by pastoral theologian, minister, and religion scholar alike. This is due to a failure to articulate clear understandings of the field, the gap between congregational ministry and higher education in religion, and conflicts in theological education in general over the place of practice and theory, experience, spirituality, and practical theology. To redress these problems, this collection of essays has a threefold aim. First, the book identifies the many changes occurring in definitions of pastoral theology, care, and counseling. Second, the volume defines and develops new methods and approaches. Third, the authors attend to the implications of these changes for congregational care and theological education. Roughly speaking, the order of the chapters in this volume follows this threefold agenda, moving from an exploration of the changes in pastoral theology to its reconstruction to some of the implications of recent innovations
roslyn karaban: Responding to God's Call Roslyn A. Karaban, Rosalyn A. Karaban, 1998 This is a book about discernment -- tuning in and listening to God's call, prayerfully reflecting on that call, clarifying what that call is, and responding to what you feel and hear. People involved in all sorts of ministry, and those who would like to be involved but find their calling in discord with the position of the Church, will find this book a valuable tool in determining what is of God and what is not, and how to set their own direction. The book includes a series of personal stories from both the author and others to help illustrate the concepts. A unique feature of this process is that it can involve loss -- the loss of who you are today in order to become what is your calling. Dr. Karaban carefully shows how this process of loss closely resembles the grieving process, and helps readers mourn and move through the losses to become what God (and you) want.
roslyn karaban: Like a Hammer Shattering Rock Megan McKenna, 2013-02-05 Renowned Catholic author Megan McKenna celebrates her 50th book with a controversial interpretation of the Gospels of Mark, Matthew, Luke, and John and what they mean for the Church and society today. In many ways, modern audiences have become so familiar with the gospels that we've stopped listening and integreting their wisdom into our everyday lives. Acclaimed author Megan McKenna explores the messages of the four gospels in the context of daily life when they were originally written and interprets their meaning for our modern world. While some argue for the development of new gospels for the 21st century, McKenna argues that we haven't paid due attention to the ones we already have; in many cases, we've ignored sections of these teachings entirely and twisted their meaning to suit our own agendas. McKenna breaks it down, gospel by gospel, and shows us how the lessons of Jesus's apostles continue to resonate.

roslyn karaban: Catholic Women Writers Mary Reichardt, 2001-07-30 Women have been writing in the Catholic tradition since early medieval times, yet no single volume has brought together critical evaluations of their works until now. The first reference of its kind, Catholic Women Writers provides entries on 64 Catholic women writers from around the world and across the centuries. Each of the entries is written by an expert contributor and includes a biography of the author; a critical discussion of her works, especially her Catholic and women's themes; an overview of her critical reception; and a bibliography of primary and secondary sources. Authors writing in all genres, including fiction, autobiography, poetry, children's literature, and essays, are represented. The entries give special attention to the authors' use of Catholic themes, structures, traditions, culture, and spirituality. The writers surveyed range from Doctors of the Church to mystics and visionaries, to those who employ Catholic themes primarily in historical and cultural contexts, to those who critique the tradition. An introductory essay places the writers within the historical and literary contexts of women's writing in the Catholic tradition, and the volume closes with a selected, general bibliography.

roslyn karaban: Seeing Children, Seeing God Pamela D. Couture, 2000 In Seeing Children, Seeing God, Pamela Couture explores the actual and potential relation of the church and the theological school to economically and socially (relationally) poor children. She argues that the solution to the problem of child poverty requires the shared responsibility of individuals, families, neighborhoods, congregations, governments, businesses, and international organizations because children develop within these multiple systems. With their unique access to these multiple systems, churches and theological schools are in a wonderful position to transform the social ecology within which children develop and to assist in children'¬s flourishing. Concretely, what would it mean for the caring ministries of the church and those who teach and learn about them in seminary to make the issue of children and poverty central to what we do? How would this change the way we live? Pamela Couture argues from a Wesleyan perspective that caring for poor children is a means of grace'¬ ;a grace that deepens our experience as the adopted children of God. She draws explicitly on recent writings that have updated the Wesleyan theological tradition. Seeing Children, Seeing God will be of particular interest to everyone who is concerned about children and poverty, especially from a Wesleyan perspective. Key Features: '¬¢ Brief and accessible '¬¢ Offers a constructive, theologically sound response to the problem of children and poverty '¬¢ Recognizes and shares responsibility for solutions across society, but especially with the church and the seminary Key Benefits: '¬¢ Readers will understand the dynamics and extent of the problem of children living in poverty today '¬¢ Readers will understand ways in which theology has undergirded efforts to deal with this problem in the past '¬¢ Readers will understand and identify with the specifically Christian imperative to respond to this problem '¬¢ Readers will understand how various groups can contributed to a concerted effort to deal with the problem '¬¢ Readers will understand how the church has failed to deal with this problem in the past
