robin totton: The Unity of Music and Dance in World Cultures David Akombo, 2016-02-03 This study surveys music and dance from a global perspective, viewing them as a composite whole found in every culture. To some, music means sound and body movement. To others, dance means body movement and sound. The author examines the complementary connection between sound and movement as an element of the human experience as old as humanity itself. Music and dance from Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the South Pacific are discussed.
robin totton: Gestures of Music Theater Dominic Symonds, Millie Taylor, 2014-02 Gestures of Music Theatre: The Performativity of Song and Dance offers new, cutting-edge essays focusing on song and dance as performative gestures that not only entertain but also act on audiences and performers. The chapters range across musical theatre, opera, theatre and other artistic practices, from Glee to Gardzienice, Beckett to Disney, Broadway to Turner-Prize-winning sound installation. The chapters draw together these diverse examples of vocality and physicality by exploring their affect rather than through considering them as texts. The book's contributors derive methodologies from many disciplines. Resisting discrete discipline-based enquiry, they share methodologies and performance repertoires with discipline-based scholarship from theatre studies, musicology and cultural studies, amongst other approaches. Together, they view these as neighboring voices whose dialogue enriches the study of contemporary music theatre.
robin totton: Emboldened Belinda Alexandra, 2023-04-26 How do you begin your life again when you've lost everything you've worked for and your dreams have been shattered? That was the question beloved Australian author Belinda Alexandra faced one freezing winter night when she ran from her home in terror, clutching only her wallet, her phone and her latest manuscript on a USB stick. To pull herself up from rock bottom, Belinda drew strength from the real life women who had inspired her bestselling historical fiction: her mother, Tatiana Morosoff, a White Russian who had fled a home more than once due to wars and revolutions; Virginia Hall, an American who lost her leg in an accident but went on to become one of the most revered Allied agents in World War II France; Carmen Amaya, who despite being born into abject poverty in Barcelona rose to become the greatest Flamenco dancer of all time; Edna Walling, who lost her own dream home in a freak fire but created garden designs that made her one of Australia's most celebrated landscape designers. They were women who had faced seemingly insurmountable challenges and found ways to forge ahead on their own terms. In a compelling and exquisite blend of memoir and history, Belinda shows readers that, no matter what challenge they might be facing, there is always the possibility of building a bold life full of meaning again from the ashes.
robin totton: Flamenco Music Peter Manuel, 2023-11-21 An expert explains and analyzes the beloved art form An iconic symbol of Spain, flamenco has become a global phenomenon. Peter Manuel offers English-language readers a rare portrait of the music’s history, styles, and cultural impact. Beginning with flamenco’s Moorish and Roma influences, Manuel follows the music’s evolution through its consolidation in the mid-1800s and on to the vibrant contemporary scene. An investigation of flamenco’s major song-types looks at rhythm and compás, guitar technique, and many other aspects of the music while Manuel’s description and analysis of the repertoire range from soleares and bulerías to tangos. His overview of contemporary flamenco culture provides insight into issues that surround the music, including globalization, gender dynamics, notions of ownership, and the ongoing debates on purity versus innovation and the relative roles played by Gitanos and non-Gitanos. Multifaceted and entertaining, Flamenco Music is an in-depth study of the indelible art form that inspires enthusiasts and practitioners around the world.

robin totton: Flamenco Music and National Identity in Spain William Washabaugh, 2016-04-15 Flamenco Music and National Identity in Spain explores the efforts of the current government in southern Spain to establish flamenco music as a significant patrimonial symbol and marker of cultural identity. Further, it aims to demonstrate that these Andalusian efforts form part of the ambitious project of rethinking the nation-state of Spain, and of reconsidering the nature of national identity. A salient theme in this book is that the development of notions of style and identity are mediated by social institutions. Specifically, the book documents the development of flamenco's musical style by tracing the genre's development, between 1880 and 1980, and demonstrating the manner in which the now conventional characterization of the flamenco style was mediated by krausist, modernist, and journalist institutions. Just as importantly, it identifies two recent institutional forces, that of audio recording and cinema, that promote a concept of musical style that sharply contrasts with the conventional notion. By emphasizing the importance of forward-looking notions of style and identity, Flamenco Music and National Identity in Spain makes a strong case for advancing the Spanish experiment in nation-building, but also for re-thinking nationalism and cultural identity on a global scale.
robin totton: Flamenco and Bullfighting Adair Landborn, 2015-09-18 Flamenco dance and bullfighting are parallel arts with shared traditions, performance conventions and vocabularies of movement. This volume introduces readers to an ongoing discussion in Spanish scholarship about the links between these two quintessentially Spanish arts. The author--a dancer and a student of bullfighting--describes the informal practice of both arts in private settings and their emergence as formal public rituals in the bullfighting arena and on the flamenco stage. Key bullfighting techniques and their influence on flamenco dance style are discussed in the context of understanding the worldview and kinesthetic culture of Spain.
robin totton: Activating the Inanimate: Visual Vocabularies of Performance Practice Celia Morgan, Filipa Malva, 2019-01-04 This volume was first published by Inter-Disciplinary Press in 2013. The dynamic exchange of perspectives that constituted the 2nd Global Conference of Performance: Visual Aspects of Performance Practice demonstrated that the foundational concept of the project is a vibrant platform for sharing and extending ideas within all aspects of scenographic practice in performance. This volume is a compilation of papers that formed the basic structure of that conference. The first four chapters present a developing schema of visual languages within theatre. From Beckett, Ibsen, Svoboda to Wilson, they navigate the symbolic and visual prioritizing of postdramatic scenographic forms. Part 2 reconsiders the predetermined divisions that deflate experiential encounters with the inanimate. Dance, puppetry and slapstick provide examples of interaction between performers and their environment. Part 3 addresses various renderings of design processes, exploring the role of drawing, fabric and body in creating a narrative. Part 4 negotiates the sensitive interface between public and performance while looking at the Burning Man Festival, flash mobs and opera media casting. The final chapters represent a global collective of process strategies that confront the production and methodologies of meaning. They engage with cultural presumptions and subjectivities in post Cultural Revolution China, Spanish flamenco, American Indian (post)colonial resistances and the traditions of Australian Aboriginal artists.

robin totton: Reconfiguring Myth and Narrative in Contemporary Opera Yayoi Uno Everett, 2015-11-30 Yayoi Uno Everett focuses on four operas that helped shape the careers of the composers Osvaldo Golijov, Kaija Saariaho, John Adams, and Tan Dun, which represent a unique encounter of music and production through what Everett calls multimodal narrative. Aspects of production design, the mechanics of stagecraft, and their interaction with music and sung texts contribute significantly to the semiotics of operatic storytelling. Everett's study draws on Northrop Frye's theories of myth, Lacanian psychoanalysis via Slavoj Žižek, Linda and Michael Hutcheon's notion of production, and musical semiotics found in Robert Hatten's concept of troping in order to provide original interpretive models for conceptualizing new operatic narratives.
robin totton: Sonic Interventions Sylvia Mieszkowski, Joy Smith, Marijke de Valck, 2015-07-14 Sonic Interventions makes a compelling case for the importance of sound in theorizing literature, subjectivity and culture. Sound is usually understood as our second sense and – as our belief in a visually dominated culture prevails – remains of secondary interest. Western cultures are considered to be predominantly visual, while other societies are thought to place more importance on the acoustic dimension. This volume questions these assumptions by examining how sound differs from, and acts in relationship to, the visual. It moves beyond theoretical dichotomies (between the visual and the sonic, the oral and literature) and, instead, investigates sonic interventions in their often multi-faceted forms. The case studies deal with political appropriations of music and sounds, they explore the poetic use of the sonic in novels and plays, they develop theoretical concepts out of sonic phenomena, and pertain to identity formation and the practice of mixing in hip hop, opera and dancehall sessions. Ultimately, the book brings to the fore what roles sound may play for the formation of gendered identity, for the stabilization or questioning of race as a social category, and the conception of place. Their intricate interventions beckon critical attention and offer rich material for cultural analysis.

robin totton: Landscapes Invisible Joon Kim, 2020-08-18 This fiction is based on the writer's personal experiences of traveling and flamenco, and his view of literature and art. An image leaflet has been laid on the bookshelf in the author’s study since he got it free in the year of 2000 in an art gallery located in the downtown of Portland. The image, which is on the front cover of this book, reminds him of Portland, a city of light and shade, where he happened to see a street flamenco show for the first time in his life. Had he not seen it in Portland, he would not have written this autobiographic story. At that time a flamenco dancer named ‘Helena’ loving Korean paintings was there in the city. Therefore now a literary work on flamenco, art and traveling titled ‘Landscapes Invisible’ is here.

A coveted hiding place for Jean Lafitte's pirate treasure in the late eighteenth century and illegal booze during Prohibition, Cat Island also witnessed the first shots of the Battle of New Orleans, an encampment for Seminoles during the Trail of Tears and the first lighthouses on the Mississippi coast. As a child, author John Cuevas learned that his family had owned and lived on the island for three generations beginning with his ancestor, Juan de Cuevas, referred to as The King of Cat Island, who received it by way of a Spanish land grant. In this engaging work, Cuevas chronicles the historic events that occurred on the island's shores and offers a tribute to the legacy of one of the Gulf Coast's pioneer families.

robin totton: Doves Lachlan Mackinnon, 2017-04-18 Doves is Lachlan Mackinnon's most candid and affecting volume of poems to date, and follows on from Small Hours, shortlisted for the Forward Prize for Poetry in 2010. Formally dexterous and inventive, these inclusive, approachable poems welcome all-comers in their broad-minded address: refugees, reality television, detective shows, number-theory, Shakespeare's brothers, ecology, a marriage. Wherever it turns, the poetry remains courageously sociable and moral, ever concerned with honouring lives and good deeds, and asking what can be saved from the ruins of what is lost by individuals, cultures and civilisations. But for all its outward gaze, its cares speak privately too - of crises in personal action and belief, of friends and intimacies disturbed and renewed - and, underpinning it all, an urging to account for our behaviour and 'to start to answer / to ourselves for what we have made of life.' Doves is an uplifting account of recovery that makes no stranger of despair. But with each moment of despondency comes a tough-minded - even humorous - response that tempers grief, and bolsters our equipment for living, and in so doing extends a timeless ring around the heart of this thoughtful, inspiriting and memorable book.
robin totton: Making Amends Gwynn Davis, 2002-09-11 Reparation, or making amends, is an ancient theme in criminal justice. It was revived in both Europe and North America in the 1980s as a practical alternative both to retributivism, and to the various utilitarian projects traditionally associated with retributive justice.Making Amends examines the practice of these schemes in the UK, USA, and Germany, and shows how criminal justice institutions were unresponsive to these attempts to cast justice in a new form. Yet the experiments reflected an abiding dissatisfaction with criminal courts and with the manner in which justice is conceived and expressed within the criminal framework. The authors' conclusions therefore have implications for the workings of the criminal justice system as a whole.
