On October 15, 1958, Sotheby's of Bond Street staged an event sale” of seven Impressionist paintings belonging to Erwin Goldschmidt: three Manets, two Cézannes, one Van Gogh, and a Renoir. How and why did these businessmen devote themselves to these items? What can we learn about eighteenth-century China by examining the relationship between merchants and objects? Luxurious Networks examines Huizhou salt merchants in the material world of High Qing China to reveal a dynamic interaction between people and objects. The Qianlong emperor purposely used objects to expand his influence in economic and cultural fields. Thanks to their broad networks, outstanding managerial skills, and abundant financial resources, these salt merchants were ideal agents for selecting and producing objects for imperial use. In contrast to the typical caricature of merchants as mimics of the literati, these wealthy businessmen became respected individuals who played a crucial role in the political, economic, social, and cultural world of eighteenth-century China. Their life experiences illustrate the dynamic relationship between the Manchu and Han, central and local, and humans and objects in Chinese history.

It examines the relations between the art, science, and technology of gems, and it does so against the backdrop of an expanding global trade in gems. The eleven chapters are organised into three parts. The first part sets the scene by describing how gems moved around the early modern world, how they were set in motion, and how they were pulled together in the course of their travels. The second part is about value. It asks why people valued gems, how they determined the value of a given gem, and how the value of a gem was connected to its perceived place of origin. The third part deals with the skills involved in cutting, polishing, and mounting gems, and how these skills were transmitted and articulated by artisans. The common themes of all these chapters are materials, knowledge and global trade. The contributors to this volume focus on the material properties of gems such as their weight and hardness, on the knowledge involved in exchanging them and valuing them, and on the cultural consequences of the expanding trade in gems in Eurasia and the Americas.

Presenting case studies from Europe, North America, East Asia, and the South Pacific, this book is concerned with both elite and popular collections and examines the act of donating art from the collector’s point of view. Demonstrating that art museums depend on donations from private collectors, Paul van der Grijp emphasizes that it is crucial to understand the psychological, sociological, economic, and educational motivations for gifting works of art to institutions. Taken together, the chapters argue that collectors donate to museums because the latter represent an imagined community, to whom those collectors would like to bestow a sacred gift. Private collectors are, Van der Grijp maintains, motivated to ensure the immortality of their collections and, ultimately, to preserve some memory of their own lives in the process.   roger keverne: CANS藝術新聞 6月號/2022 293期+亞洲藝術新聞 6月號/2022 209期 華藝文化, 2022-05-31 我怎麼看這場佳士得香港夜拍 5月26日晚間,香港佳士得舉行「二十及二十一世紀藝術」夜場拍賣,我認為這是一場攸關全球現當代藝術市場未來發展的重要拍賣,尤其是對中國當代藝術而言。首先看一下數據。本場共拍出59件拍品,總成交14.07億港元,成交率95%;誕生了二件過億級拍品、26件千萬級拍品;41.4%拍品超過估價成交,44.8%的拍品在估價內成交。從數據看來,這是一場成績不錯的拍賣成績,尤其是高達95%成交率。 二件過億成交拍品都是廿世紀現代藝術。趙無極〈29.09.64.〉以2.78億港元成交;畢加索〈畫框中的男子半身像〉以1.7495億港元成交。可惜的是,原本預期可以過億的張大千潑彩〈山寺飛泉〉慘遭流標,這讓原本好不容易找不到核心的近現代書畫市場再度陷入泥沼。 本場廿世紀中國現代藝術有吳冠中、劉抗、陳文希、丁衍庸、趙無極、陳逸飛等6位藝術家作品入劄,除一件趙無極撤拍外,其他作品都在超過高估價成交。中國當代藝術家同樣有6位入劄,分別是曾梵志、劉野、劉煒、陳飛、李華、張恩利。相對於西方當代藝術家佔比增加,今次中國當代藝術家作品減少於往年,的確有被邊緣化的現象。 6件中國當代藝術家作品成交分別說明了什麼? 本場備受關注的曾梵志〈協和醫院系列之三〉以4845萬港元成交,此拍品曾在2013年香港佳士得秋拍以1.13億港元成交,本場含傭金不到5千萬,賣方經過9年沈殿,還足足賠了6千多萬港元。劉野〈拿紅旗的海軍〉以3765萬港元成交;張恩利〈女人〉以1005萬港元成交;至於底價1000萬港元的劉煒〈革命家庭〉則流標了! 原因為何?劉野為西方卓納畫廊David Zwirner代理、張恩利為霍夫肯畫廊 XavierHufkens 代理。相對於本場無西方畫廊代理的劉煒作品的流標,或許這就是答案。本場中國80後唯一藝術家陳飛〈憂傷的農夫〉以1,008,000港元成交,其代理畫廊是貝浩登畫廊Perrotin。本場反應出一個現實,「只有被西方畫廊代理的中國當代藝術家,才能在拍賣二級市場保證成交」。 一場與中國完全沒有關係的拍賣會 這樣說,有點偏勃。畢竟中國藏家多少有點參與,但比起往昔,本場參與的中國藏家真的少之又少,甚至連微信朋友圈那些過去關心拍賣的人都消蹤了!中國的缺席,絕對是這場中國當代藝術家作品拍賣不如預期的主要原因。如果中國對於疫情的封控還是如此嚴格,我更擔心的是中國經濟真的出現問題後,中國當代藝術市場下調將更為嚴峻。中國當代藝術市場可能就這樣被疫情封控,給玩完了! 本場拍賣結果,還說明了三件事: 一、被西方藍籌畫廊代理的中國當代藝術家,才是拍賣二級市場成交的最佳保證。沒有被代理的藝術家,將難以入劄香港拍場。二、中國當代藝術家拍賣二級市場,如同中國骨董、近現代書畫,將逐漸移往中國內地拍賣。未來內地拍賣才是中國當代藝術市場的主戰場。三、香港的現當代藝術板塊將逐漸從中國、亞洲轉向西方,並納入西方藝術產業結構。未來西方現當代藝術作品將以正規軍進軍香港。 從本場拍賣成績來看,西方現當代藝術作品成交還是可圈可點的,畢竟西方藝術作品不會因為中國人不買而崩盤。西方藝術市場跟全世界有錢人的財富很有關係,有著全球範圍的參與支持,這就是為什麼全世界的有錢人都想投資西方藝術品,包括中國的有錢人。但中國藝術品卻只有中國人的參與,就連最國際化的當代藝術市場,也只有中國藏家願意購藏,很少聽說西方藏家跟進。這就是今次夜場所呈現的「當中國藏家無法跟進時,中國當代藝術市場便馬上陷入困境」。 一個國家財富越多,藝術品就越貴。藝術市場絕對是國家經濟實力的展現。今次受中美對抗、疫情封控影響的中國經濟下滑極為嚴重,其對中國藝術市場的衝擊將是巨大的,甚至已到危機的地步。因此,當晚我看到的不僅僅是畫作價格的下調,中國當代藝術市場甚至可能出現流動性的危機。如果中國經濟真的出現螺旋下降進而引發房地產崩盤,所謂「藝術品缺乏流動性」的問題更是無可避免⋯⋯且求售無門。
  roger keverne: Olmec Art at Dumbarton Oaks Karl A. Taube, Dumbarton Oaks, 2004 Olmec Art at Dumbarton Oaks presents the Olmec portion of the Robert Woods Bliss Collection of Pre-Columbian Art. It illustrates all thirty-nine Olmec art objects in color plates and includes many complementary and comparative black-and-white illustrations and drawings. The body of Pre-Columbian art that Robert Bliss carefully assembled over a half-century between 1912 and 1963, amplified only slightly since his death, is a remarkably significant collection. In addition to their aesthetic quality and artistic significance, the objects hold much information regarding the social worlds and religious and symbolic views of the people who made and used them before the arrival of Europeans in the New World. This volume is the second in a series of catalogues that will treat objects in the Bliss Pre-Columbian Collection. The majority of the Olmec objects in the collection are made of jade, the most precious material for the peoples of ancient Mesoamerica from early times through the sixteenth century. Various items such as masks, statuettes, jewelry, and replicas of weapons and tools were used for ceremonial purposes and served as offerings. Karl Taube brings his expertise on the lifeways and beliefs of ancient Mesoamerican peoples to his study of the Olmec objects in teh Bliss collection. His understanding of jade covers a broad range of knowledge from chemical compositions to geological sources to craft technology to the symbolic power of the green stone. Throughout the book the author emphasizes the role of jade as a powerful symbol of water, fertility, and particularly, of the maize plant which was the fundamental source of life and sustenance for the Olmec. The shiny green of the stone was analogous to the green growth of maize. This fundamental concept was elaborated in specific religious beliefs, many of which were continued and elaborated by later Mesoamerican peoples, such as the Maya. Karl Taube employs his substantial knowledge of Pre-Columbian cultures to explore and explicate Olmec symbolism in this catalogue.
