purdue biology ranking: Google's PageRank and Beyond Amy N. Langville, Carl D. Meyer, 2006-07-23 Why doesn't your home page appear on the first page of search results, even when you query your own name? How do other web pages always appear at the top? What creates these powerful rankings? And how? The first book ever about the science of web page rankings, Google's PageRank and Beyond supplies the answers to these and other questions and more. The book serves two very different audiences: the curious science reader and the technical computational reader. The chapters build in mathematical sophistication, so that the first five are accessible to the general academic reader. While other chapters are much more mathematical in nature, each one contains something for both audiences. For example, the authors include entertaining asides such as how search engines make money and how the Great Firewall of China influences research. The book includes an extensive background chapter designed to help readers learn more about the mathematics of search engines, and it contains several MATLAB codes and links to sample web data sets. The philosophy throughout is to encourage readers to experiment with the ideas and algorithms in the text. Any business seriously interested in improving its rankings in the major search engines can benefit from the clear examples, sample code, and list of resources provided. Many illustrative examples and entertaining asides MATLAB code Accessible and informal style Complete and self-contained section for mathematics review |
purdue biology ranking: Strength in Numbers: The Rising of Academic Statistics Departments in the U. S. Alan Agresti, Xiao-Li Meng, 2012-11-02 Statistical science as organized in formal academic departments is relatively new. With a few exceptions, most Statistics and Biostatistics departments have been created within the past 60 years. This book consists of a set of memoirs, one for each department in the U.S. created by the mid-1960s. The memoirs describe key aspects of the department’s history -- its founding, its growth, key people in its development, success stories (such as major research accomplishments) and the occasional failure story, PhD graduates who have had a significant impact, its impact on statistical education, and a summary of where the department stands today and its vision for the future. Read here all about how departments such as at Berkeley, Chicago, Harvard, and Stanford started and how they got to where they are today. The book should also be of interests to scholars in the field of disciplinary history. |

purdue biology ranking: Biodefense in the Age of Synthetic Biology National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, Division on Earth and Life Studies, Board on Life Sciences, Board on Chemical Sciences and Technology, Committee on Strategies for Identifying and Addressing Potential Biodefense Vulnerabilities Posed by Synthetic Biology, 2018-12-05 Scientific advances over the past several decades have accelerated the ability to engineer existing organisms and to potentially create novel ones not found in nature. Synthetic biology, which collectively refers to concepts, approaches, and tools that enable the modification or creation of biological organisms, is being pursued overwhelmingly for beneficial purposes ranging from reducing the burden of disease to improving agricultural yields to remediating pollution. Although the contributions synthetic biology can make in these and other areas hold great promise, it is also possible to imagine malicious uses that could threaten U.S. citizens and military personnel. Making informed decisions about how to address such concerns requires a realistic assessment of the capabilities that could be misused. Biodefense in the Age of Synthetic Biology explores and envisions potential misuses of synthetic biology. This report develops a framework to guide an assessment of the security concerns related to advances in synthetic biology, assesses the levels of concern warranted for such advances, and identifies options that could help mitigate those concerns. |
purdue biology ranking: Statistical Methods for Ranking Data Mayer Alvo, Philip L.H. Yu, 2014-09-02 This book introduces advanced undergraduate, graduate students and practitioners to statistical methods for ranking data. An important aspect of nonparametric statistics is oriented towards the use of ranking data. Rank correlation is defined through the notion of distance functions and the notion of compatibility is introduced to deal with incomplete data. Ranking data are also modeled using a variety of modern tools such as CART, MCMC, EM algorithm and factor analysis. This book deals with statistical methods used for analyzing such data and provides a novel and unifying approach for hypotheses testing. The techniques described in the book are illustrated with examples and the statistical software is provided on the authors’ website. |

purdue biology ranking: Individual Characteristics Significant to Salary Levels of Engineers and Scientists Richard P. Howell, Martin Gorfinkel, Dale Bent, 1966 Effective comparisons between salaries of one engineer-scientist population and those of another may be made in two ways, using equations developed in this study. The first compares the aggregate salary of a given population with the aggregate salary of the population used in developing the equations of this study. The steps necessary to make such a comparison consist in: (1) obtaining point-of-hire characteristics of the population to be compared, (2) entering the values of the variables called for in the equation developed in this study, (3) computing the sum of the salaries, and (4) comparing results with the sum of the actual salaries being paid. The second type of comparison consists in developing a regression equation concerning the population to be compared, using point-of-hire variables identical with those used in this study. The coefficients or parameters of the resulting equations may then be compared to those of the equations developed here to provide insights concerning the relative emphasis placed by management (knowingly or unknowingly) on selected characteristics of new hires. The coefficients or other parameters amount to a kind of profile, and by knowingly controlling them, a management may choose the characteristics that it wishes to stress in salary determinations. Thus the salary structure may become a more effective means to implement policy. |

purdue biology ranking: Women Scientists in America Margaret W. Rossiter, 1998-09-29 Winner of the Pfizer Award for Outstanding Book in the History of Science Margaret Rossiter's widely hailed Women Scientists in America: Struggles and Strategies to 1940 marked the beginning of a pioneering effort to interpret the history of American women scientists. That effort continues in this provocative sequel that covers the crucial years of World War II and beyond. Rossiter begins by showing how the acute labor shortage brought on by the war seemed to hold out new hope for women professionals, especially in the sciences. But the public posture of welcoming women into the scientific professions masked a deep-seated opposition to change. Rossiter proves that despite frustrating obstacles created by the patriarchal structure and values of universities, government, and industry, women scientists made genuine contributions to their fields, grew in professional stature, and laid the foundation for the breakthroughs that followed 1972. |

purdue biology ranking: Comparative Guide to Science and Engineering Programs James Cass, Max Birnbaum, 1971 A key focus is to examine how is humanitarian intervention legitimate in present diplomatic dialogues. In exploring how far there has been a change of norm in the society of states in the 1990s, the book defends the broad based constructivist claim that state actions will be constrained if they cannot be legitimated, and that new norms enable new practices but do not determine these. The book concludes by considering how far contemporary practices of humanitarian intervention support a new solidarism, and how far this resolves the traditional conflict between order and justice in international society.--BOOK JACKET. |
