prophet shepherd bushiri date of birth: The Use and Abuse of the Spirit in Pentecostalism Mookgo S. Kgatle, Allan H. Anderson, 2020-11-29 This book is a pneumatological reflection on the use and abuse of the Spirit in light of the abuse of religion within South African Pentecostalism. Both emerging and well-established scholars of South African Pentecostalism are brought together to reflect on pneumatology from various approaches, which includes among others: historical, biblical, migration, commercialisation of religion, discernment of spirits and human flourishing. From a broader understanding of the function of the Holy Spirit in different streams of Pentecostalism, the argument is that this function has changed with the emergence of the new Prophetic churches in South Africa. This is a fascinating insight into one of the major emerging worldwide religious movements. As such, it will be of great interest to academics in Pentecostal Studies, Christian Studies, Theology, and Religious Studies as well as African Studies and the Sociology of Religion. |
prophet shepherd bushiri date of birth: Prophecy and Politics in South African Pentecostalism Mookgo Solomon Kgatle, 2023-12-28 This book is an interdisciplinary study of the relationship between prophecy and politics in South African Pentecostalism. The role and the power of prophecy in enhancing the presence of politicians in the church square are unpacked through historical examples, as well as case studies of contemporary prophets. Solomon Kgatle argues that the influence of prophecy in politics has the potential to weaken the prophetic voice of the church in general and the Pentecostal movement in particular. He proposes a Pentecostal political theology of prophecy. This theology is developed by taking into cognizance the theoretical and theological frameworks of prophetic imagination and pneumatological imagination. In addition, this theology seeks a balance between prophecy and power and prophecy and sovereignty. |
prophet shepherd bushiri date of birth: Public Righteousness Abimbola A. Adelakun, 2023-05-25 Public Righteousness: The Performative Ethics of Human Flourishing is driven by the idea that part of what manifests as a disorderly display of virtue in public culture is underlined by the desire to see a more righteous society and an expression of the will to enact such an ideal world into reality. This book re-structures the ferment of such public displays and fashions an ethic that overturns the ostentatious signals of self-righteousness and the fierce contest of animating visions. This book engages the work of social ethicist Nimi Wariboko to explore an idea of public righteousness. In place of smug superiority and phony pieties, the performative ethics that inaugurate this public righteousness offer an intellectual and moral competence that establishes rectitude and culminates in human flourishing. |
prophet shepherd bushiri date of birth: Pentecostalism and Cultism in South Africa Mookgo Solomon Kgatle, 2021-02-28 Pentecostalism is a growing movement in world Christianity. However, the growth of Pentecostalism in South Africa has faced some challenges, including the abuse of religion by some prophets. This book first names these prophets and the churches they lead in South Africa, and then makes use of literary and media analysis to analyse the religious practices by the prophets in relation to cultism. Additionally, the book analyses the “celebrity cult” and how it helps promote the prophets in South Africa. The purpose of this book is threefold: First, to draw parallels between the abuse of religion and cultism. Second, to illustrate that it is cultic tendencies, including the celebrity cult, that has given rise to many prophets in South Africa. Last, to showcase that the challenge for many of these prophets is that the Pentecostal tradition is actually anti-cultism, and thus there is a need for them to rethink their cultic tendencies in order for them to be truly relevant in a South African context. |
prophet shepherd bushiri date of birth: To Another Level Sherry Majette, 2021-11-05 During my new beginning and walk with the Lord, I have received a second chance for my life to make things right. The cover design depicts one of the many visions given to me. As you look at the cover of this book, you are looking at a stairway leading up to the light at the end of the tunnel. When I heard a voice say to me, “Look to your right. See those steps over there, I want you to start walking up there to that light before you until you reach the top.” I agreed. As I started on my journey, it became the longest walk of my life. The steps were long but narrow. At one point about midway, there were a lot of distractions and people traveling the same path. There were moments of gray with limited light to darkness and tunnels of blackness of uncertainty of where I was and being alone becoming fearful, but I kept walking. Then I came to a crossroad with only a right and left turn, and there was a light. People began to take those left and right turns, but I heard the Lord say, “No, do not turn to your right nor to your left, keep walking to the light before you.” It was a long hard journey to get there, but when I arrived at the door, the light was even brighter. I turned to look behind me and saw that I was alone. Everyone else took the shortcut to a different destination. Listen and follow that small, still voice when you hear it, it’s the Holy Spirit speaking to you. |
prophet shepherd bushiri date of birth: Christological Paradigm Shifts in Prophetic Pentecostalism in South Africa Mookgo Solomon Kgatle, Marius Nel, Collium Banda, 2021-09-22 This book explores recent developments in South African Pentecostalism, focusing on new prophetic churches. The chapters engage with a number of paradigm shifts in Christology, identified as complementing Christ, competing with Christ, removing Christ and replacing Christ. What are the implications of these shifts? Does it mean that believers no longer believe in Christ but in their leaders? Does it shift believers’ faith towards materiality than the person of Christ? This volume will be valuable for scholars of African Christianity and in particular those interested in the neo-prophetic movement and Christology in a South African context. |

The book reveals the lack of substantive evidence to back such healing claims and the contradiction between the VMMCC claims and the consequences of those claims in sexual health and practice. |
prophet shepherd bushiri date of birth: Protect the Harvest; Defend the Harvester Brill Pongo, 2016-09-16 Protect the Harvest; Defend the Harvester talks about the conversion of a journalist who was very much against the rise of the modern day church, particularly the prophetic movement and the so-called prosperity gospel preachers. In his attempt to discredit the preachers, the journalist has a heavenly encounter which transforms his views and alters his spiritual course. At a later stage, while the journalist is travelling to DR Congo from Zambia, God shows him a vision and speaks to him about the need to ‘Protect the Harvest, protect the granary and defend the harvester(s)’. An interesting encounter and valuable reading as he outlines how the Media in today’s world is conspiring to discredit the church and soil the characters of the servants of God. He talks of how the church is under attack from the enemy within and without; he likens the gossiper inside church to weevils. A fascinating read. “A powerful and exhilarating testimony of an amazing encounter with God.” Pastor Rikki Doolan – Superintendent (Osborn Institute of Theology) www.osbourninstitute.com “An amazing testimony accompanied by very powerful teaching. The world needs this at this very moment.” Apostle Max Matonhodze www.planetministries.org.uk “A captivating testimony that carries you through a journey and teaches you the deep things about visions. Brilliant Pongo has demonstrated an amazing way of teaching and testifying. Indeed this book is testament to that. It is a great read.” The Financial Gazette www.fingaz.co.zw |
prophet shepherd bushiri date of birth: The Fourth Pentecostal Wave in South Africa Solomon Kgatle, 2019-11-27 This book critically examines contemporary Pentecostalism in South Africa and its influence on some of the countries that surround it. Pentecostalism plays a significant role in the religious life of this region and so evaluating its impact is key to understanding how religion functions in Twenty-First Century Africa. Beginning with an overview of the roots of Pentecostalism in Southern Africa, the book moves on to identify a current fourth wave of this form of Christianity. It sets out the factors that have given rise to this movement and then offers the first academic evaluation of its theology and practice. Positive aspects as well as extreme or negative practices are all identified in order to give a balanced and nuanced assessment of this religious group and allow the reader to gain valuable insight into how it interacts with wider African society. This book is cutting-edge look at an emerging form of one of the fastest-growing religions in the world. It will, therefore, be of great use to scholars working in Pentecostalism, Theology, Religious Studies and African Religion as well as African Studies more generally. |
prophet shepherd bushiri date of birth: The Prosperity Gospel in Africa Marius Nel, 2020-06-15 Africans’ prevailing interest in the prosperity gospel is not only connected to the influence of American prosperity teachers reaching a worldwide audience through their imaginative use of the media, but is also related to the African worldview and African traditional religion, and its lasting influence on contemporary Africans and the way they think about prosperity, as well as their interest in prosperity in post-colonial Africa. The research from a classical Pentecostal perspective about the impact of the prosperity message on Africa is necessary, timely, and relevant because of its influence in the African Pentecostal movement and its potential to harm the faith of believers, leading to the potential disillusionment of Christian believers who put their trust (and money) in formulas and recipes that seemingly only work for others, especially the prosperity leaders who lead by example with incredulous riches and wealth. |
prophet shepherd bushiri date of birth: Commercialisation of Religion in South Africa Mookgo Solomon Kgatle, Jonas Sello Thinane, Chammah J. Kaunda, 2023-11-22 Aspects of the 2017 Final Report of the South African Commission on the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities (CRL) have drawn strong criticism, particularly from South African scholars, politicians and the public. The criticism is largely regarding the constitutionality of its recommendation, which calls for regulation of the Religion to combat its abuse and commercialization. Scholars have criticized the CRL Rights Commission for hastening its investigation and releasing the final report without having a substantive understanding of what is meant by the commercialization of religion, and consequently the unconstitutional implications of the recommendation, to regulate religion. A close reading of this critique has pointed to the urgent need to assemble a cumulative body of research that examines and advances understanding of what is meant by the commercialization of religion. Accordingly, this book gathers scholarly contributions which offer valuable insights into the basics of what is meant by the commercialization of religion. Contributors examine this phenomenon from the historical roots to the manifestation in the contemporary world, particularly in South Africa. |

prophet shepherd bushiri date of birth: Radio, Public Life and Citizen Deliberation in South Africa Sarah Chiumbu, Gilbert Motsaathebe, 2021-05-24 This book critically analyses the important role of radio in public life in post-apartheid South Africa. As the most widespread and popular form of communication in the country, radio occupies an essential space in the deliberation and the construction of public opinion in South Africa. From just a few state-controlled stations during the apartheid era, there are now more than 100 radio stations, reaching vast swathes of the population and providing an important space for citizens to air their views and take part in significant socio-economic and political issues of the country. The various contributors to this book demonstrate that whilst print and television media often serve elite interests and audiences, the low cost and flexibility of radio has helped it to create a ‘common’ space for national dialogue and deliberation. The book also investigates the ways in which digital technologies have enhanced the consumption of radio and produced a sense of imagined community for citizens, including those in marginalised communities and rural areas. This book will be of interest to researchers with an interest in media, politics and culture in South Africa specifically, as well as those with an interest in broadcast media more generally. |
prophet shepherd bushiri date of birth: Religion and Inequality in Africa Ezra Chitando, Loreen Maseno, Joram Tarusarira, 2023-01-12 This volume reveals how religion interfaces with inequality in different African contexts. Some contributors undertake detailed analyses of how religion creates (and justifies) different forms of inequality that holds back individuals, groups and communities across the continent from flourishing, while others show how religion can also mitigate inequality in Africa. Topics addressed include gender inequality, economic inequality, disability, ageism and religious homophobia. Specifically focusing on the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goal 10 to reduce inequality within and among countries, this book highlights the extent to which Africa's 'notoriously religious' identity needs to be taken into account in discourses on development. |
prophet shepherd bushiri date of birth: BULLSH!T Jonathan Ancer, 2024-03-04 An outrageous miscellany of serious and light-hearted lies, myths, untruths, fibs and fabrications that tells the tall tale of South Africa. The fibs come thick and fast, like a burst sewerage pipe: • Why everything we've learnt about Shaka Zulu, 'Africa's Napoleon', is a pack of lies. • Back in the darkest of ages (the 1970s!), citizens were told that there were satanic messages if you played some of The Beatles songs backwards. • National icon Hansie Cronje was a paragon of virtue, and integrity ... until he wasn't. • President Nelson Mandela told us that we, as a nation, were 'special'. Turns out we aren't. Whether a fabulous fib, an artful con, a doctor's spin, or simply a bald-faced lie, there's something for everyone. |

Most of the contemporary publications on the widespread phenomenon of African Pentecostalism create the impression that only scholars from the Global North have contributed to the field. This volume addresses the lacuna in the available scholarship by undertaking detailed analyses of how African scholars from diverse academic disciplines and African/Diasporan context have helped to shape the field. The included chapters provid fresh data on new themes and perspectives in the field. |

prophet shepherd bushiri date of birth: Understanding Prophetic Ministry Pastor Tewodros Assefa Damtew, 2023-09-12 With the advent of social media and its inherent ability to make people's words go viral, abundant opportunities exist for false prophecies to flourish in the church. People are drawn to these prophets to ease anxiety, fulfill wants, or know the future. But when these men and women aren't speaking God's words, they can lead people astray and turn their eyes from our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ. In Understanding Prophetic Ministry, author Tewodros Assefa Damtew addresses this danger by highlighting the benchmarks and characteristics of the true prophets of God and providing practical instructions on how to deal, in love, with the false prophets that will arise these days. Pastor Damtew bases his words on biblical truth and rigorous theological study, and his teaching provides transformative insights and guidance to all those interested in learning more about prophecy and other ministerial gifts in the church. With topics ranging from the restoration of the prophetic ministry to the infiltration of false prophets, this is a must-read for Bible students, visionaries, church leaders, and the laity. Relevant, timely, and straightforward, Understanding Prophetic Ministry will be a valuable resource in Bible colleges and seminaries, church and personal libraries, and small group studies. |

prophet shepherd bushiri date of birth: Inventing the New Dispensation in Zimbabwe Ezra Chitando, Lovemore Togarasei, Joram Tarusarira, 2024-11-14 How does a regime, whose members have been actively involved in the previous one, appropriate and deploy religious ideas and rhetoric to cast itself as 'born-again' and attractive? Exploring intersections between politics, religion and economics, this book examines invention of Zimbabwe's 'New Dispensation,' the regime of Emmerson D. Mnangagwa, and how it has aimed to separate itself from the previous regime of Robert G. Mugabe. Utilizing the concept of 'invention', contributors reflect on how Mnangagwa and his publicists deploy religious ideas, concepts and rhetoric in the quest for legitimacy in a heavily contested political field. The book also reflects on the ways opposing political actors have utilized the same template in their quests to secure power. The contributors interrogate the use of time, theological ideas and religious practices to separate Mnangagwa's regime from Mugabe's. This book provides insight into how religious rhetoric is used not only to gain, but also to contest legitimacy in Zimbabwe's political sphere. |

prophet shepherd bushiri date of birth: The Nation That Fears God Prospers Chammah J. Kaunda, 2019-01-15 Through its strength in numbers and remarkable presence in politics, Pentecostalism has become a force to reckon with in twenty-first-century Zambian society. Yet, some fundamental questions in the study of Zambian Pentecostalism and politics remain largely unaddressed by African scholars. Situated within an interdisciplinary perspective, this unique volume explores the challenge of continuity in the Zambian Pentecostal understanding and practice of spiritual power in relation to political engagement. Chammah J. Kaunda argues that the challenge of Pentecostal political imagination is found in the inculturation of spiritual power with political praxis. The result of this inculturation is that Zambian Pentecostals sacralize the political authority of state power through the charisma of the national president and other major political personalities. It has also contributed to the construction of Zambian Pentecostal leadership that is deified rather than leadership that is formed through the struggles and experiences of the marginalized and powerless. Kaunda argues that the solution does not lie either in desacralization of powers or the separation between the church and the state, but rather in rethinking the Christ event as a paradigm for the recovery of Pentecostalism's sociopolitical prophetic dynamism. |
prophet shepherd bushiri date of birth: New Media and the Mediatisation of Religion Gabriel Faimau, William O. Lesitaokana, 2018-10-01 New media, including digital and social media, play a central role in producing and reproducing socio-cultural and religious practices. Its presence has not only resulted in changes to the ways in which religious beliefs are practiced, but has also altered the way religious meanings are expressed. How has new media technology informed and influenced religious engagement and participation? In what ways has new media technology enabled religious groups to practice and preach their religious beliefs to a broader audience? To what extent has the emergence of social media and social networking sites shaped religious discourses and religious practices? This volume offers a unique, Africa-centred perspective in response to these questions. While presenting new scholarly developments in the fields of media, religion and culture in Africa, this book also provides empirical and theoretical insights into the intersection between new media and religion. |

Joke-Performance in Africa describes and analyses the diverse aesthetics, forms, and media of jokes and their performance and shows how African jokes embody the anxieties of the time and space in which they are enacted. The book considers the pervasive phenomenon of jokes and their performance across Africa in such forms as local jests, street jokes, cartoons, mchongoano, ewhe-eje, stand-up comedy, internet sex jokes, and ‘comicast’ transmitted via modern technology media such as the TV, CDs, DVDs, the internet platforms of YouTube, Facebook, and other social arenas, as well as live performances. Countries represented are Egypt, Kenya, Malawi, Morocco, Nigeria, and Zambia, covering the North, West, East and Southern Africa. The book explores the description of the joke form from various perspectives, ranging from critical discourse analysis, interviews, humour theories, psychoanalysis, the postcolony and technauriture, to the interactive dramaturgy of joke-performances, irrespective of media and modes of performance. Containing insightful contributions from leading African scholars, the book acquaints readers with detailed descriptions of the diverse aesthetics of contemporary African jokes, thereby contributing to the current understanding of joke-performance in Africa. It will appeal to students and scholars of African studies, popular culture, theatre, performance studies and literary studies. |
